Are my skis too long?

Just got volkl 2015 ledges, 179cm, and my friends are telling me they're too long. I'm 5'8 and an advanced rider, trying to get good in the park. I'm trying to get rails down, and my friends are telling me it's going to be much harder to learn with skis that may be too big. Are my friends just assholes? If not, how can I make these bigger skis work when approaching new tricks, especially rails.

since you are learning 171 might be more appropriate, but in reality it wont make that much of a difference. if you want to learn new tricks on these skis, don't make the ski size an excuse, just put in the work and commit and you will learn fine don't worry.

I am about the same height and ski 188cm. Makes no difference in my opinion just have to get used to what you ride.

for a park ski, people generally go for something more around their height, so in your case like 173 cm. but you said you are an advanced rider which means you have no problem at all handling an extra 5 cm. it's not going to make a noticeable negative difference (and for landing big shit you'll love it)

don't worry, or worse yet, buy new skis, because of a 5cm difference. hell, idk how volkl measures their park skis, so those 179s could very well be more like 175 cm or so.

okay and i just checked and ledges are symmetrical, and therefore true center mount, which means theyre easy to handle and won't have as much extra length in front of your foot as another ski might. and they have a little rocker and tail rocker which means theyre even easier to control. you are SET dude, tell your friends to stop being pussies

Ledges have tip and tail rocker. I don't believe those skis to be too long at all. Now, if you are 125lbs, and weak as fuck, you might be able to get some quick gains in the park from skiing something shorter, with ultimately a lighter swing weight. That being said, if you are 125lbs, you can also get some quick gains in the gym, which is probably cheaper than buying new skis. Cheers.
