Are kids really this stupid?

so im a soph. in college and in my history 202 class on monday we had a map quiz over all 50 states, major rivers, lakes, all of central and south america as well. so i was thinking this shit is cake and i learned all that in 5th grade and breezed through it. but we got our tests back today and a couple kids by me were talking about how they thought georgia was next to louisiana and that they thought vermont was maine. are typical college kids really that retarded?
 
dude i know. everyone in my grade learned all states and capitals of those states. i still remember all of em, but some tards in my grade cant even remember where some are located, much less the capital of a state like iowa, des moines!
 
I'm a beast at maps and stuff in history. I think most americans in general are bad at geography. Like 30 percent couldn't find louisiana on a map after katrina. I imagine it is probably close to the same now.
 
I am horrible at maps and geography. I can navigate a map and stuff but I cannot point out which state is which for the life of me.

Doesn't mean I am stupid just means I really could care less where certain state are located...only the important ones, like where I live ;).
 
nope. wrongo. there are actually 52, just like a deck of cards. < thats the easiest way to remmeber.........

get our head out of your ass just because some kids cant remember where some states are doesn't make them stupid. Guess what, I dont remember where all of the states are. Im sorry i didn't pay attention in the 3rd grade, i was probably to busy picking my nose.

i know it's somewhat hard to memorize, but seriously...americans need to know where shit is. Especially in their own country. It's downright embarrassing to not know at least the general location of stuff in your own country. and it may not actually be due to a lack of intelligence, but if you're a foreigner talking to an american who doesn't know where their own states are, then that impression is all that will remain.
 
I honestly couldn't place all the states in the northeast. They're all the size of a fucking baseball diamond and the borders look like the drawings of someone having a seizure.
 
in 8th grade a teacher asked a kid where vt was on a map (we lived in VT)

he first pointed at Oregon

then Florida

then south Carolina

then somewhere near Ohio i don't remember.

how can you not know that?
 
that is especially ridiculous. while i think its pathetic to not know all the states. or at least their general locatons. if you dont know where your OWN state is, thats truly pathetic.
 
I don't know about you or where your from, but I can name all 50 states, their capitals, all the U.S. territories and 183 countries in 5 minutes.. You have to understand that not many people get the opportunity to learn Geography. I didn't going through middle school, and since most people never leave this country, never have to learn this stuff or care about learning it. And yes, it is the school's fault for not teaching it. I don't know anyone who's had the inclination to learn Geography even IF they don't know where the fuck Europe is on a map. Plus, American school systems suck a nut. They are more centered around preparation for the SAT's than actual learning. Remember how they cut the Music and Arts funding for schools? Well now they're cutting social studies and Geography. Pretty soon it'll only be English pedagogy, Math through an Algebra II level, and basic Biology and Chemistry.

I can't even begin to stress how much we need to reform our school systems.
 
dude, im from canada and i could still label a map of the US. how do these kids not know? was it never taught to them or something? did they have the fuckin flu?

here's a good one. since hopefully many of you know at least where the canadian provinces are how many mexican states can you name/locate? its kinda funny how 85% of us don't know dick about mexico.
 
if you put a blank map infront of me i'll be able to write down 20-30 states tops.
I dont really care though because i can do other shit people cant do
 
That just goes to show that you need a little more than a basic degree to have a leg up on anyone, because any moron can get a college degree these days.
 
yeah unfourtunatley kids these days are probably that dumb, but some have really good "street smarts" probably the video games finally catching up with us
 
im a pretty smart kid, but i think it might be pretty difficult to remember all that shit if you're not good at memorizing. we were taught that stuff in 5th grade and i can definitly see like 80% of my fellow seniors failing that test.
