Are drug tests the norm when you apply for a job?

Here in Ontario, I've never heard of anyone getting drug tested for local jobs (unless its for a cop position). Yet when i read the forums here, it sounds like a of kids in the states have to deal with this stuff just to apply at the local grocery store. Is this the case everywhere in the states?

 
I kind of doubt it, it would make it super difficult to find new employees if they actually drug tested. I know on lots of applications you have to sign a waiver giving them permission to drug test you but it really never happens. At least thats what it seems like with people I talk to. I haven't switched jobs in 4 years.
 
I worked at a grocery store about 6/7 years ago, and they 'drug tested' me. It must not have been very accurate, or they waived the results, because I was hired, stoned out of my mind.
 
I haven't ever been tested when I was hired somewhere, hell, my last job I hooked my boss up with bags once in a while.
 
I went into rite aid for an interview a week ago and the guys asked me the last two numbers of my social security, after i gave them to him he told me he didnt have to drug test me. I asked him about it and he said they randomley drug test applicants based on the last two digits of their social security. It was weird I know they drug test you if you work in the pharmacy but i didnt think I would be tested during an interview which i would have failed. I guess it could be because rite aid is a big chain but that was the first time I had ever even thought about being tested for a job, and I live in the U.S.
 
Yeah...probably "The Union"....they talk about how drug testings and private prisons are new big businesses.

Can you guys post where you live too...helps give the answers a bit more context :)
 
I live in Ohio(FML) and i have been tested at only on job.

I work at a city owned and operated Recreation center, and that is the only place that has given me a drug test, just because taxpayers are paying my wage.

Other than that, i have not been tested for any other job i have had(ski shop, liftie, cpu tech, panera, ice cream place, etc.).

i live in Massachusetts, and i was drug tested when i started working at Sears. Every new employee has to be tested with them

I've had several friends NOT get a minimum wage job because they tested positive for THC.... bullshit! (Wisconsin)
 
I live in Seattle, construction worker, building a prison oddly enough.. its weird shit, there are people protesting the job all the time. But anyway I had to pass a drug test to get this job. I can understand a little bit I guess cuz its kind of a dangerous gig, even though its pretty retarded that I would get fired for smoking weed when half the guys out there are hardcore alcoholics and no one gives a fuck.
 
in Alberta the Oil and Gas industry is super strict and mandatory, it's for your own safety i guess but you only pretty much have to be clean when getting hired,

Pretty much any government funded organization will drug test you...but once you pass your pretty much in the clear. Then random other places like what other people have been mentioning.

Whats the job?
 
haha it seems like around my area the jobs that usually have the harshest drug test rules always have tons of stoners that just use fake piss or detox
 
im a welder and i had to pass a hair test (for real) upon hire, and now that i have the job, am subject to random piss tests. thank you whizzinator
 
best buy tests i know that. i know a girl who didnt get the job because she wasnt clean, my bro got the job there...he was clean.
 
Foodtown in NY never tested my brother. My vegiterian brother is there right now in the deli ironically. He also has a pot head friend who's always at the register. But my town is run by burn outs. We have alot of artist. The peole who live on the top floor of my dad's apartment house is Gwen Banks, and Dameon banks. My point is i live in a pot filled artsy comunity. No where drug test except the annoying cops. NO ONE LIKES THEM!
 
I did for my current job, an engineer internship. When I worked at keystone I definitely didnt get tested. I know some other people who got tested: other internships and Lowes mostly.
 
Yeah in the Oil Patches you get drug tested but it's stupid because they drug test you when you apply and then guys work for the rest of the yea on meth and don't get tested.

Also places like best buy might drug test but only care about hard stuff
 
i work in a grocery store in the vegetable section (lol) and theres no drug test or else everyone one would be fired, I live in Québec but I'm guessing you're not looking for a job in a grocery store haha.
 
i worked at a chain grocery store they had no testing policy and ritas italian ice didnt. the mtn i work at does but i havent been tested yet. i was gonna work at toys r us a few months ago but i had been smokin alot and it was a mandatory test to start working so i didnt i live in pa
