We have experienced a tumultuous and uproarious few years at Arapahoe Basin. From major expansions to pass partner changes to 4th of July skiing to the pandemic, we have not slowed down for a second. It has been challenging, fun, difficult, crazy and weird all at the same time.

Throughout it all, we have focused on making the A-Basin experience the best it could possibly be. While we are constantly changing the “stuff” at The Legend, we strive to preserve our culture and vibe. Our first major step was to design, construct and implement The Beavers / Steep Gullies expansion. We added a big chairlift and nearly 500 acres of exciting groomers, gladed runs and dramatic chutes. We offered more terrain and spread the crowd out even further. We left the Epic Pass. The Basin simply wasn’t big enough to handle that many pass holders. We joined the Ikon Pass. The spirit of A-Basin was in sync with Ikon resorts and they had fewer pass holders and days were restricted.

Moving forward to the 2021-22 season, we are taking more major steps to preserve the culture and vibe. COVID forced us to learn in a few months what probably would have taken us five years to learn otherwise. Next season we are going to continue to restrict our pass and ticket visits. While reservations will not be required for our season pass holders, we are going to limit the number of passes that we sell. In fact, we are going to sell 10% fewer unrestricted passes next season than we did this season. On top of that, we will continue to limit the number of lift tickets sold each day and all tickets must be purchased online and in advance. No lift tickets will be sold on site. We anticipate selling out of weekend lift tickets on a regular basis.

So why are we doing this? There are many factors, like a friendly and knowledgeable staff, a spectacular mountain and excellent facilities, that go into to making Arapahoe Basin special. We also think a critical factor for a successful day is keeping crowd size down and skiers and riders spread out. For decades, a key strategy for us was to keep adding more and more skiers. That is no longer the case. We are actively working to reduce the number of skiers on weekends and holidays. We have learned so much since COVID forced us to hit a daily target of skier numbers. Next season we will continue a similar strategy. Our target will be to have a “comfortable” level of skiers each day. Our ticket inventories and pricing will directly reward midweek skiing over weekend skiing. By knowing how many people to expect each day, we can do a better job running the place. We will measure success by reducing parking challenges, keeping lift lines and other service lines short and by observing smiling skier faces.

This is a big, big change. We are ready for this change. We know our skiers and riders want to preserve the A-Basin culture and vibe. We know they want to cherish and enjoy this stunning place. There are many great resorts in the world, but there is no place quite like Arapahoe Basin. By making these changes we plan on keeping it that way.

We fucking love you Al! I could kiss this man. The basin doing it right.

This needs to become an industry norm.

Idk. I like the idea of limiting the shitshow. But sometimes it's nice to roll up to a new mtn and be able to just buy a ticket, tag along with your friends.

Luckily plenty if smaller resorts will probably never do this so you have options.

And honestly we had reservations at crystal and limited tickets. And it was busy af. Probably more people coming because they have nothing to do but the reservation system seemed to add more hype.

Even on a shitty day it would be packed af because people comitted to that day. If it rains but you already have your reservation or an actual ticket youre going to go.

How did the reservations go for other peoples mtns? Did it feel like it limited traffic? Also if it was a shitshow with crowds was that limited of what it would have been or consistent with normal?

Just curious. Also i mostly just ride where i work and if I have passes or comps to other mtns so i rarely di the day ticket thing.

Some places it need it more than others for sure. At the little Midwest hill I work at it was does right unsafe this year. Lift lines going up the run and people crahsing through them, somebody died after getting pushed off the side of a run hitting a lift. Can only fit so many people in a space before it doesn't work and becomes dangerous

True yeah that's no good.

Mtn i worked at in NY for 4 years was big for night skiing and tubing. They limited people tubing and sometimes itd be a massive wait to get in, but at a certain point you gotta cap it or nobody is having any fun.

Crazy times. Def interested in the post season disection of this year, people's plans for next year, and how the industry evolves.

They should have a certain amount of walk up passes allotted

reservation system did not work well at Timberline. It was chaos to get a reservation since you had to be online and clicking right when it became available. On hill it was tough to manage because they couldn't totally guard the lot all night and people were jumping the line and driving up early and parking up there just to hike or back country ski or whatever. Seemed like it really motivated everyone to show up early too since you had put all the extra effort into it. Overall it wasn't good for me since I tend to try to show up late and try to avoid the crowds anyways. Fortunately it didn't last long at Timberline and Skibowl decided not to have reservations at all. I skied mostly in the afternoon and evenings this season and rarely waited in a lift line

Most important tl:dr of the above if anyone missed it - A basin passholders will NOT need a reservation. Just ikon and day pass folk. And reservations and pass sales will be capped.

At Bridger Bowl it was pretty rocky at first and people were constantly complaining about the site crashing and stuff and on the weekends reservations sell out fast. It discouraged me from getting a pass this season which I kinda regret as I've only been on the hill once, but I am also the kinda person who usually doesn't decide if I'm going skiing for the day until 20 minutes before I leave my house and sometimes I'll just head up for the afternoon to rip just a few laps which seemed impossible this year which is the main reason I didn't get a pass.

I really hope they don't require reservations next season. I like rolling out of bed late on the weekends, having a leisurely morning and not feeling like I have to get the most out of the ski day. But also Bozeman is growing so fast that it makes a lot of sense to have reservations on busy days.

I feel you man. Thats about whem I knew I was riding northstar. On the first or second post work beer, ok fuck it lets boot up. Diamind peak would either be after my friends left or I went home and wanted some more laps etc.

Hell we decided to ride a bunch day of or day before.

It's cool to see that an abasin wont require reservations. I get that everything is weird right now but i feel like we're transitioning back into mellower times. If i have a pass and csnt go ski on a tuesday without reserving a few days before, fuck. That kinda kills the vibes.

I guess the same as the mtns are doing we can just make the best of it and come along for the ride.

Didn't go so well but I don't think anyone anticipated this many people flocking to some of these resorts this year so resorts got caught with their pants down and haven't really done much to help besides share their proposed paid parking plans for next season haha. They were definitely worried about low skier numbers back in the fall but I think they're really having second thoughts, or are super stoked from all the $$$ thats been made.

This was my first time at the basin this year, did you guys find lines shorter than other years? I wouldn’t know, but I was there mon-sat, and mon-fri there was literally no wait at any lift on the mountain and tons of space to rip, will probably buy a pass for just there on top of my ikon as that’s gonna be biffs home mountain soon ?

couple benefits to the ikon pass regarding the reservation system, pass holders are given priority in some way, and to get a reservation I just get on the app and click a button , boom done, for the resorts that require parking pass, that’s a pita, all the more reason to get into the bc more.

I didnt quite understand, so will people with seasons passes be able to go up and cruise whenever or do they need a reservation? I like this idea because it makes it so things don't get too out of hand. I wish that this would be implemented more often. Especially with no online purchasing, I don't know it just seems more fair to me. I'm not the biggest fan of parking restrictions and what not and maybe this could be a good substitute for it.... Hope it works out at A-Basin

Season pass you can just roll up. Key is it’s not on any unlimited mega pass else it would be pointless. WP for example is moving towards long term fucked from ikon - with pony and iron horse being the last hope.

gotcha... thanks for specifying

"Our ticket inventories and pricing will directly reward midweek skiing over weekend skiing."

Proceeds to jack up weekday-only season pass price.

Yea that doesn’t make sense. I went to the website expecting to see some big price difference between weekend and weekday since they keep saying how they want people skiing midweek....and it was like $80 different. Bro I’m not gonna commit to not skiing weekends for a whole year for $80

And they increased the early purchase weekday pass price by either $40 or $60, with no renewal discount.

The only time I would characterize the lines being "bad" were peak holiday's, and some days when lifts were down from icing, or tree's falling on Jeff Flood. I also remember the new Pucci lift being down one morning.

But what we complain about as far as lines on Hood are kind of funny compared to what the rest of North America see's.

$300 Friggin incredible, barely $1000 between that and ikon , gonna ski soooo much, I got a lotta days this year but they were wet, icy, thin cover so the east just sucked this season

Man, if you only knew what the pass use to be! It damn near doubled in price this year. Not complaining, it's still a great deal. It was just an absolute steal in years passed.
