Apple WWDC - New MBP, OSX, iOS6

I'm really rather exited for the MacBook Pro with Retina display.

That screen in combination with an incredibly small form factor, great specs and big battery life is insane.

Too bad the price as usual has went straight from dollars to euros. So I will have to spend $ 2743 for the base model

But there was more then the new MBP, OSX and IOS6!

Apple has sneakingly upgraded the Mac Pro's (by a tad bit).

They have alsorevamped the AirPort Express essentially making it a mini AirPort Extreme:

New Apple AirPort Extreme

Same form factor as the Apple TV it seems, (I did like the plug design...for traveling.) but finally two ethernet ports and simultaneous dual band wifi.

And the new iPad Smart Case.

Basically the Smart cover, but now instead of just protecting the front of your precious slab it will also protect it's backside.

Some noob questions...plus k for help.

What would be better (besides size) 128 GB solid state drive vs 256GB flash storage?

I am really torn between ordering the high end 15 inch MBP/8gb/750 SERIAL ATA HD

or

Low end 15 inch retina display MBP/16gb/256GB Flash Storage

any suggestions?
 
Right now I'd go for the Retina option.

128GB SSD is essentially the same as 256GB flash storage in terms of tech. They are both flash chips just they way they are embedded in the system is slightly different.

An SSD is a loose drive that can be put in to any pc, Apple's flash storage is soldered directly onto the Motherboard. This often makes it a bit faster because it's directly on there.

Also Apple's own SSD's have TRIM enabled in Lion, third party do not, SandForce drives do have a good garbage collection system but it doesn't beat the TRIM from the OS.

If you want more storage you can always add a portable hard drive.

Since you said you wanted to do editing I'd say go for the Retina and be amazed by that screen.
 
Not getting the retina display at this point would be stupid. Go look at each in the store and you will see how big of a difference the retina display is compared to the standard display.
 
Yeah with my teacher discount they are about the same including apple care. My only worry is that they may not have all the kinks worked out with the retina display. I may wait a month or so to see if any problems arise.
 
I don't understand what you mean about kinks, its a display, its physical. They've had retina displays on iphones for over 2 years and ipads for what a year?
 
The difference very slight but it isn't noticeable, hardly even in benchmarks, but I'm drunk and then I become illiterate and things come out in a wrong way.

 
Kinks meaning overheating which happened with the new iPads. As stated before, I do not know nearly as much about these things as some people do. For me it is a serious investment to purchase something over $2000, so I definitely want to make sure it would not have problems.
 
In recent years the 13" and 15" MacBook Pro came with a stock 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive.You have the option of a:

128GB solid-state drive,

256GB solid-state drive,

512GB solid-state drive.

But they are silly expensive, it's better to just get a SSD from a shop.

The original MacBook air back in 2008 came with an 80 GB 4200-rpm 1.8-inch PATA HDD or 64 GB SSD

It was later upgraded to a 120 GB 4200-rpm 1.8-inch SATA HDD or 128 GB SSD and since late 2010 the MacBook air is SSD only as far as onboard storage goes.

The new 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display comes with either an 256GB, 512GB or 768GB SSD.

Do note however that the SSD in the MacBook Air and 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display are soldered directly on the motherboard and not user serviceable.

Unlike the MacBook Pro which can accept any 2,5 inch drive.
 
They didn't overheat, but people just noticed they run slightly hotter then the iPad 2.This is hardly a flaw but a byproduct of powering that retina Display.

They have a completely new thermal system in the 15" MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

I doubt it will overheat.
 
just saying, you're spending 2k on a product, i doubt its gonna have any major issues. Every product is gonna have small issues, thats normal. But like someone said, i doubt the display will effect anything. Its not like apple build this computer and didnt test it.
 
actually, they release a lot of products with shitty problems. they test, but its not 100% guarantee your battery won't suck or your mac won't over heat
 
interested to see how apple reacts when windows 8 is released, which personally i believe blows iOS out of the water at the moment.

mind you, i'm typing this from my MBP so i am no way a windows fanboy
 
Maybe read what I said again. Sure, every product released by any company is gonna have problems, thats normal. But he acted like if he bought the newest tech that it would fail or something.
 
A lot of hardcore fanboyism in this thread. I never understood why one would be a "fan" or "follower" of a product or company. It baffles me as much the idea of unconditional love. No true Scotsman puts sugar in his porridge eh?

 
heres what really sucks, yesterday used to be apples best day with the release of new hardware and software.

but yesterday stock prices fell by almost 10 points.

I also do not like this pattern of Iphone releases, they tease you with IOS6 but it wont be available until their Iphone event which is now happening in the fall.
 
Huh? The prices haven't changed in about 4 years. The base model 15" is still $1799, same as when I was looking at them back in college. The prices on the upgrades are pretty much the same as the past.
 
Considering the raw specs of components some things that Apple makes are indeed not very appropriately priced. However, when you consider the combination of those components integrated into a single unit with excellent industrial design that follows Dieter Rams' ten principles of "good design" it's not even expensive at all. And that for me was and always has been Apple's selling point.

Also there is no real price to design.

I know a small Italian design company, they make a dining table with a stunning design.

They make it for 1800 euros in their factory, it sells for 14000 euros.

Is it going to be better at it's main task then let say an similarly sized dinning table from Ikea that would run a mere 150 euros?

Probably not, but despite the immense price difference people are still willing to pay for that table just for the "looks" and when people are willing to pay that price, the price is justified.

But there is more to Apple then just design, the OS and the ecosystem for example. If you combine different Apple products they will all work together wonderfully, something I have yet to experience in with different companies.
 
For the 15" Retina MacBook Pro in Europe that's the dollar price.

They only thing I truly hate about the technology world is that in almost all the cases the U.S. dollar price converts directly in to Euros without even considering exchange rates.

Over the pond we pay a lot more for our gadgets and toys.

(Strangely enough Apple does consider the exchange rate with Apps.)
 
this, i bought my mbp right when they released the unibody models and the updated processors/gpu's and the issues i had werent even with the new tech, but with a shitty superdrive and a hdd that failed a month or two in. after all that happened, apple replaced everything, and anything that has been an issue with my mbp for free through my apple care, as of a month or two ago i have a computer with replaced/refurbished everything, aside from the display

Fixit is calling the new MacBook Pro the least repairable laptop ever. Soldered ram, fused display unit and a non standard SSD (as in no third party can be used). Say goodbye to any type of reasonably priced repairs on this sucker, better not have your SSD fail or your ram go bad! And for the love of god don't crack that display!
 
the air is kind of like that since a lot of things are soldered onto the motherboard. just get applecare and they cover everything, they fix it for free. applecare saved me a large bill for my old iphone
 
sounds dope but my mbp works fine. the only thing that this would affect me for in the near future is how the ipad is getting siri, but if i were to get a tablet i would get an ipad. love my droid phone, but definitely not getting a droid tablet
 
say what you want, but the macbook pro with retina is easily the best laptop on the market at that price point when you consider its internals, display, and dimensions. for once, you are actually not paying a premium for an apple computer. the idea of unconditional love for a tech company is dumb, but when apple is consistently putting out genuinely fantastic products, then i think its healthy for people to get excited about them. i feel that people are genuinely excited because there is something to be genuinely excited about, when in the case of the iphone 4s, people weren't excited because it was only an incremental update. yadig?
 
I just picked a Retina Display MBP and its unbelievable. I transfered my entire music librarie from my phone to my computer in less than 10 minutes. It runs incredibly smooth and everything just seems to pop up. The screen itself is incredible as expected.
