Apple is suing Motorola, saying that Motorola has infringed on patents related to its smartphones.

Apple said in a filing that the Droid, Cliq, BackFlip and other phones from Motorola violate its patents related to the iPhone’s touch screen and user interface.

Apple says it wants Motorola to stop using the patents and is seeking an unspecified amount of damages, as well as its lawyers’ fees and costs. The lawsuit was filed in a federal district court in Wisconsin on Friday.

The suit comes after Motorola sued Apple in October over patent infringement.

Motorola was a top cellphone maker in 2006, because of the popularity of its Razr clamshell phone, but it was surpassed by others when smartphones became popular. Meanwhile, iPhones from Apple have surged in popularity. The company sold 14.1 million last quarter.

Motorola is the seventh-largest phone maker in the world. In North America, it is outstripped by Apple and Research In Motion, the maker of the BlackBerry. Motorola’s recent smartphones, like the Droid line of phones, run on Google Android software.

I love when people have no fucking clue what they are talking about on ns but will defend their opinion until the internet dies

lol there have been a shitload of copyright infrigements within the last year.... apple has sued more than just motorola. whats the big deal? even google has been sued.

all companies are trying to dominate the their respected markets, so of course they're gonna try and cripple the competition.

I think it was just a cease and desist letter and asked to try to find a way to settle everything outside of court. No case has been filed.

Why doesn't apple be the greedy fuckers they are and sue other phone companies like samsung and other companies with touchscreen phones that "infringe on the Iphones touchscreen user interface". Assholes.

because when you make a patent, you own what ever you made. how would you like it if you invented something but everyone else is getting credit for it.

Not necessarily. There were other companies before apple even had the idea for a touchscreen phone. Companies like IBM which had their phone named "The Simon" which was released to the public 1993. Before that, A Professor at the University Of Kentucky designed the first ever touchscreen phone named The Elograph That Professor, Doctor Sam Hurst, is the true holder of the patent for the touchscreen interface. I don't really understand how apple would win it. They didn't really invent the actual touchscreen phone, there were earlier phones way before the iphones time.

WME+Scott+Armada-->ScarmadE.

ScarmadE, n. A nit-picky legal action initiated by one ski company against another, generally resulting in a significant drop in respect for the initiator in the eyes of the Newschoolers community.

Other ski companies: DON'T BE "THAT GUY." We want to like you. Don't break our hearts.

apple did not invent the touch screen. they are just worried of losing profits due to the rise in popularity of other smartphones so they are trying to squeeze some cash out of motorola

haven't read anything about this except the above posts, but i think people don't realize that apple's touchscreen operates completely different from this others, which i believe is the issue at hand. so stop saying "blahblah should sue apple for using touchscreens", thats just really stupid. apple's screen operate based on the electric currents in body, as opposed to pressure applied to the screen. have you even noticed how styluses don't work on iphones? that is what apple has a patent for, so apparently motorola's latest screens are similar enough to the electrically triggered screens patented by apple.

no, it does not. A capacitive touch screen measures electrons from your finger to tell where you are touching the screen, MOST mid to high end smart phones with a touch screen use a capacitive screen these days, very few use resistive any more. Read what I just posted, all you guys seem to think they are suing over the touch screen, they are suing over multitouch functions and some OS issues which apple legally owns the patents for.

i didn't read:(

i was unaware of this, i was under the assumption that apple owned the patent for this type of touchscreen!

In this case, I think apple should win the case...

They came up with the technology, people shouldn't be biting it without paying them some sort of skrilla

Motorola tried to sue them first. There have been a few lawsuits and counter lawsuits recently involving the iPhone. Especially by companies like motorola that have lost significant market share.

Apple is no stranger to have to sue other companies for ripping their ideas off. We all remember Microsoft stealing the Mac OS. Unfortunately and inexplicably, Apple lost.

No sir. Armada has only sent a cease and desist letter. no lawsuits have been filed.

YOU need to do some reading....

It's the type of touch screen they use. Like different sensors and shit like that. All touch screens are different
