i am currently in talks with a small, private company about becoming a sales rep for their product. I dont know much about retail, but i do know that i present the company a fantastic opportunity for market penetration in an untapped area could honestly probably double their sales. They seem to like the idea, but are curious how the logistics of the sales rep program would work. i am just curious how being a sales rep would normally work, anyone have any insight?

You ask a company for a job, they give you one, and now you have to figure out what that job you asked for actually is?

thats a pretty description of your situation but uhh idk just remember everyones name and suck peoples dick and dont take rejection personal.

Ive had a few sales jobs; peoples whos names to remember/dicks to suck

medial-nurses

office- secretaries/receptionists

financial- your customer obviously

retail- store managers, you have t o suck their dicks hard, they're king of the store and abuse it since its the only power they'll ever get

also lie and steal space from your competitors

I did outside sales for 2 years.
If you are outside sales, you aren't doing cold calls, thats for inside sales.
So...
Inside sales calls around and finds potential buyers and so forth. When they find an interested party, they contact you.
I would then call the shop and arrange a time to meet them that is convenient for them.
Then show up and make your pitch and be awesome.
Then you handle other things like training the employees on the product... inventory... I had to collect payment sometimes...

Then there are things like trade shows and so forth that you have to go to and meetings with your area manager and blah blah blah.
Basically I love outside sales and it rocks and I want to do it more. Or inside sales cause I like working with buyers.

I used to do door to door sales, it's pretty gay. You can make good money, but people are dicks and you need to be pretty self-motivated, being in a good environment will help a lot.

also give decison markers free shit either samples for them to consume or free prodct to sell for profit and if you dont have anything free to give them go back to lying and make them think part of what the're getting is a bonus. like you have to weigh out the benefit of rewarding cooperative people and bribing cocksuckers

ok i wasnt very clear at all. i get what a rep does, thats not my prob. its how theyd compensate, for example, would it be a percent of sales on that contract, or a fixed rate based on each new account? i dont know how retail works in the sense that, do the retail stores have contracts with the manufacturers for when theyll purchase etc, or do they like keep renewing orders, or how does that work.

it all depends on the company and the product. Some people in sales get a salary others are commission based. How the commission is broken down varies from job to job as well. I know from my exprience on the retail end of the spectrum some products we order once a season, and others we make replenishment orders throughout the year.

either base+commission or just commission, either way you get a quota. It doesn't matter what you're selling if you can exceed the quota, ask for a percentage increase of your commission (or more base if you don't believe in the products future). If they deny you, take your sales numbers to other companies and try to leverage a new job bc all employers care about is you vs. the quota. and it would help if we knew wtf you're gonna be selling
