Anyone seen "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"?

The newest one is very good, I highly recommend it. All three swedish millenium movies(2009) are on netflix instant, gonna have a movie day sometime and watch all three. Also plan on reading/audio booking the series too.
 
There's something I've always wodnered about translated books - are they as good as the original? (in general, not just girl with dragon tattoo). Obviously, as an art form, some of the brilliance of a book is in the word choice and structuring of the phrases/paragraphs, which sometimes can't be replicated in other languages due to grammatical structure or whatever... I've always wondered whether those who read like, for example, Harry Potter in chinese or arabic or whatever are reading the same literary masterpiece that some consider the English version.

Well, Harry Potter, for example, I've read them all in English and in Finnish. No love lost, really. With all your Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws and Rita Skeeters and Lovegoods...

Most key characters remain the same (Dumbledore, Potter, Voldemort), some don't (Snape = Kalkarus, Skeeter = Luodiko, Lovegood = Lovekiva). The translations are either literal or completely new words that seem like they would fit the Finnish Potter universe, such as when the spells like Patronus is "Suojelius" lit. "Protectio" or something.

Somehow I found the Finnish version to be more endearing than the originals actually. I've heard the same of the Swedish version. The original is a bit stiff, the pacing and twists are great, but the language itself apart from the made-up words is purposefully easily understandable and not jot-down worthy.

Honestly, the quality of the translation highly depends on the quality of the original text. You could send a monkey to translate the whole Stephen King's Dark Tower series and they wouls still come out very good, but some shitty Dean Koontz novel will not come out well even if translated by a true professional dedicated to the art.
 
Suck it up, its part of the story. That movie would not be the same without some of those scenes. Sounds like you need to go watch arthur christmas or the new muppets movie, they're less morbid.

pretty excited for this, read all three books in 3 days they're so gripping, as for the translation it reads incredible, the books are about the story rather than the language used so translations are far better, other books where its the language the author uses that creates the book like shakespeare etc. are far harder to translate

watching it later this week and can't wait.

 
true, I literally just closed my eyes for about 2 minutes, I have an incredibly weak stomach when it comes to witnessing human evil and I've learned thru the years to no longer test my abilities to handle it even if it is just a movie

really good movie overall, and the actress gets bonus points in my book for being NFL royalty in real life haha
 
It was late at night when i was watching it and i couldnt stand to read the sub-titles anymore so i just fast forwarded to all the worst parts.
 
saw it last night, awesome movie. kept me wondering what was going to happen next the whole time. ending sucks though I feel bad for her, shes hot as fuck besides the metal in her face.
 
Read the book first! It's soooooo much better than the movie. Movie was alright but the book was fucking awesome!

I've read all the books from the series, watched the swedish versions of the girl with the dragon tattoo, the girl who played with fire and the girl who kicked the hornets nest.
 
Well, Mike-O pretty much took care of that... bit I read the first Harry Potter in German. It's definitely a weird, and there were a couple slight name changes in the German translation as well, the one that pissed me off was "Hermine" instead of "Hermione." Small, but annoying. Overall it was pretty much the same, and anything that was lost on me was mostly just because my German wasn't that great when I read it. (It still probably isn't good enough to totally comprehend the story.)

Another example is "All Quiet On the Western Front." It's a German book which I read in English, and many words quite simple, as is the whole writing style. While the story is still gripping, the translated version is not very sophisticated. Just some thoughts...
 
Saw this today and it was a let down especially considering I'm a pretty big David Fincher fan.

Length

Way too fucking long, like they finally get the bad guy and then the movie just keeps on going. There just wasn't enough action and the pace was too slow. There were a lot of unecessary scenes and I thought the movie would have been way better if they cut out the last 30-45 minutes.

Acting

Daniel Craig's overrated and just plain boring in this movie but not like horribly bad. Rooney Mara is a nightmare however. She tries to play like the cold, disturbed, but like strong in her own way bitch but she ends up just being boring and way to simple and awkward and its just miserable. Second of all she looks fucking hideous in this movie...like yea she's goth but they don't make her into like a cute scene chick rather they make her look like a fucking ugly dude. (this is erica albright from social network who breaks up with Mark in like the first scene - also just found out her sister is Hayden from American Horror Story) Anyway she looks gross throughout the entire movie but she does get naked a few times and she's got a pretty good body so your like yea I guess I would bang her but its still gross cause her face is fucking disgusting.

Rape

Surprisingly graphic for that movie but I've seen A Serbian Film so it was a walk in the park but yea there was a lot of rape going on, it almost seemed silly.

Plot

Intricate enough but there's no good twist at the end and like I said the pacing was way off.

Anyone see the original version and can compare the two?

I'm guessing the book is a lot better cause the movie sucked.

Anyway not worth the $$ to see it in theaters, I'm glad I saw it (more like got it over with) I would hate to watch it again.
 
Just saw the American version tonight and I thought it was a great movie. Really considering trying to read the books quick before I go back to school. Also, is it the same girl in all three novels?
 
agrizzled. Swedish version was very "swedish movie" (in a good way) while American version had the extra flair and action and loudness, but lacked the finesse and character work of the Euro-version. Pretty much the same relationship as many european movies vs. american movies.
 
I thought the American version was a lot better than the Swedish version. In my opinion, the Swedish version cut corners waaayy too much if you compare it to the book.

 
I have yet to see the american version, but I'll probably agree with you. I really really liked the swedish ones. They were amazing.
 
Been wanting to see it for a while now. My friend said he had read the the books and that the movie would be extremely good.
 
Books>Swedish Version>Hollywood remake which is a bit of a slap in the face for the swedish one.

 
Just finished the first book, pretty damn well written. I think I'm going to watch the Swedish version first, then the Daniel Craig one. Yes?
 
The american interpretation is just too...american. It's overdone, yet it lacks something vital. It's no doubt one the better movies hollywood has recently churned out, but imo, nothing beats the originals. Then again, books>film.
 
The Swedish one is really good. I don't think I'll go and see the new one with Daniel Craig though. I like thrillers but hate horror. The rape scene's were a little tough for me...especially when he ties her up. Cunts fucked.
 
I went to the premiere when it came out, and really enjoyed it actually. Plus Rooney Mara is a babe. Really interested in the whole series now. I'm going to buy the book trilogy, and read it. Plus my roommate bought the Swedish film trilogy, so I'll be watching that.
 
It is not a feel good flick, I just kinda got mind raped for 3 hours and then it ended, I then just went home and curled up in bed wondering WTF did I witness.
 
yeah definitely agree with this, when i read the book i imagined her to be far more attractive but its the same with the swedish one, she looks pretty minging in that as well. when she dresses up at the end she looks incredible

also i disagree with you about it being too long, if anything the ending was rushed and didn't fully explain what was going on. perhaps the beginning was too long but they had wanted to stick to the book as much as possible and its hard to get all that stuff into a 3 hour film.

i thought it was great, not as good as the books but still well worth seeing. definitely would recommend it
 
Good movie, a little long but good "hole up with your girl, some alcohol, and chinese food on a rainy night" movie. Most important thing coming out...

Daniel Craig can fucking dress.
 
Swedish trilogy is 1000 times better. And the chick grew on me. Girls like that (skinny, black short hair, tattoos), are my weakness. Anyways, I loved the trilogy, and I what I got the most out of it is that all Swedish old men are rapists.
