Anyone Know Of A Good Subaru Mechanic?

Well, I just moved here a month and 1/2 ago, pretty awesome so far!

Except my Outback seems to be shitting a brick. Bubbles in coolant, overheats at the top of Little Cottonwood, Big Cottonwood.

So I'm planning to take it in tomorrow.

I live in Sugarhouse, and only have 1 car, so I'd rather not be going to Sandy or anything.

Thanks all.

join up and hit the chat box, you'll find someone who you can pay in beer or otherwise to do whatever you need to do to your car. fuck a mechanic, B. I'd offer but I have too much shit to do on my own car.

craig's on 13th east is where i used to go, and all of my friends. he's not subie specific, but he's good in general.

When I used to own an older camry, I had taken it to stewish on 33rd south, across from Molcha Salsa. Not too bad but since getting an outback, I've had everything done by Mark Miller on State (oil changes, etc).
I would take it to a dealer, have them verify the issue, check their rate and then check some other local garages for their rates.

If you're looking for a no bullshit, straight up mechanic, I HIGHLY recommend AutoGraff on 7th South and Main. Milton has the cleanest and most reliable shop I've ever been to. Floors are clean enough to eat of off and he won't screw you over with unneeded repairs. I've taken my Impreza there everytime I've had a problem and never had any complaints with their work and get it done in a timely fashion.

This place seems to have pretty darn good reviews online. I'l call them tomorrow to get an idea of their prices.

Do you have any idea on where they come in for prices, like in relation to a dealer?

$1900 is the price to beat, and that's from Utah Imports, if anyone knows anything about them. http://www.utahimports.com/

I found it for about 250 cheaper at Old Fashion Service, but that didn't include water pump, spark plugs, wires, and some other stuff, which is all included at Utah Imports.

And I called dealer, can't remember which one. But they said $1700 - $1900, but thats not including timing belt, water pump etc. So their really out of the question.

So from the sounds of this I'm guessing your head gaskets went bad?

I had the exact same issue with my 98 Forester this past year. I had already been going to Autograff for 1.5 years just for routine maintenance like brakes, oil change, etc. I did some shopping around talking to Mark Miller, another dealer in Layton, and maybe one other. At the end of the day I went with Autograff. They were a little more expensive than a few of the other options (though not the most expensive), but they also seemed like the best. I talked with Milton on a few different occasions asking him various questions in regards to what they would be doing, how long it would take, cost etc. and he was super helpful. Granted these guys cost more than some of the other options, I feel they had the best value when it came to all of the parts they were replacing, their labor costs and their customer service. Along with replacing all of the gaskets and seals, machining the heads, and the routine head gasket stuff, they also replaced the timing belt and the water pump. According to them, my engine should be set for another 100,000 miles. Total cost was a few dollars under $2300 with tax. It's your call but I can definitely vouch for these guys.

Yeah, I guess I forgot to mention that its the head gaskets.

Thanks for the info, I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Do you know, did they have to re mill the heads or something like that? Cause I know that costs a couple hundred bucks extra.

But I'm hoping my engine doesn't need that, since it really only heats up after going up Big or Little Cottonwood.

Mine was the same way, only overheated when it got close to the top of a canyon. They did not have to machine my heads, and come to think of it they said it's very rare that it needs to be done. I think it depends on the type of engine and how much abuse it's been taking, but it's unlikely that they have warped and need to be re-shaped. I had the same question for those guys and that's basically how they answered it.

My homie Dana lives in Sandy and is a Subaru specialist. Just works out of his garage. Way cheaper than an actual mechanic shop, and he does a good job. 801-232-3684, tell him I gave you his number.

Well thanks a bunch for the info about the shop, but I think I'l stick with Utah Imports.

I called Autograff today at like 9:15, and they said they'd get back soon with a guesstimate. Well, its 21:45 and nothing haha.

And if it's around 2200 I reeeaaallly don't want to drop an extra 300 on it (over Utah Imports $1900), thats almost 2 months of food haha.

Zima Auto somewhere near 5th west and 3300 south. they have a website. subaru specific and cheap. Pay in cash and save some more money...
