I have to do a paper about Mandelas violent or non-violent forms of protest. i have to choose to support one or the other but i'm having a hard time deciding. seems like in the end, non-violence was what helped end apartheid in south africa, but his more violent forms of protest like sabotage was what really woke other nations up about what was going on in south africa. any thoughts? what do you think was more effective? violence or non violence?

non violence definitly.

there was no violent retaliation after soweto massacre or whatever, and they used bus strike's and other stuff to bring to attention aparthied issues.

did you watch that movie on nelson mandela, forgot what it was called but it would probably be pretty helpful.

karma?

thats pretty cool^. i've decided to go the non-violent route for my paper. i've got 2 pros of why non-violence was more affective, but is still need one more. so far my first pro is that him being in prison was a major reason that helped bring apartheid to an end casue other nations did not want to trade with South Africa and they demanded the release of mandela. my other pro is that the sharpville massacre was what brought apartheid to the attention of other nations. during the sharpville massacre, blacks were protesting non-violently and white police officers ended up killing 69 africans. people were outraged around the world when they heard the news, and it was a non-violent act on the protesters side that caused this out roar. can anyone think of one more reason of why non-violent protest was more affective in bringing apartheid to an end?

Why the hell would you ask a bunch of kids on ns? There's this wonderful invention, the INTRANET, that will show you what you need to know!

in an ideal world non violence would be more effective, but theres only so far that can get you. atleast with violence people take notice quicker. but looking back over history violence has gotten more results. to quote mao zedong, "all power grows out of the barrel of the gun". examples of resolution sort by violence include, french revolution, american revolution, russian bolshevic revolution, spanish civil war, prussian formation of the germanic states, vietnam / indochina conflict, the list goes on forever. there are some examples of non violent ressolution such as ghandi and india and nelson mandela in south afrcia and the english revolution in the 1600's, but in these examples less of a change was won rather than complete change as with the violent ressolutions.

not that im all for violent resolutions, but it seems to bring faster an more effective results. which is why the examples of ghandi (who sort teachings from mandela) and mandela are such rare and great men in history.

dont know all that much bout mandela so i wont try to go into details, but i hope that helps with your non violence vs violence debate.
