Anyone here with a vegan diet?

I'm a vegetarian and thinking about trying to change my diet to a vegan one. Just wondering if there was anyone else here, especially guys, who are vegan. Looking for a bit of advice on what to do to start. To me it seems like this will be much more difficult than going vegetarian was. I have just heard good things about it and want to give it a shot. I'm very glad I went vegetarian and have no regrets with that, so I'm wondering if I'll feel the same way about a totally plant-based diet.

Also I don't plan on going full vegan yet. Literally every chair in my house is leather, every pair of boots I own is leather, leather belt. I love wool socks, wool sweaters, down. Maybe in time I will give that stuff up when it needs replacing. For now though I just want to do the food thing.

INB4 that "vegan support group" meme or any comments about how eating meat makes you more manly or something. I don't care.

find a kitchen store or local co-op that teaches classes on vegan cooking. they usually have knowledgeable staff you can learn from.

Eat more mushrooms. they have a great hardy flavor and texture. Probably doesnt matter to someone thats been a vegetarian though. i suppose you dont miss meat a whole lot.

Can someone explain why vegans don't eat eggs, I've allways wondered, eggs aren't fertalized, regardless of how long they sit around no baby will ever come out, you don't need a roster to get eggs, they're fuck free?

theres a difference between vegans and vegetarians. vegans don't use anything that came from an animal. like OP stated some vegans don;t even wear wool even though no animals are harmed in the production of harvesting wool.

my sister's vegan and its probably the most annoying thing ive ever seen. She basically eats salad, nuts and tofu and that's about it. And whenever we go out to eat she has to customize her meal to the extreme or just not really eat anything at all. Her health has taken a turn from it too, waaay too skinny and on all sorts of vitamins and stuff. Im all for people being vegetarian but i think vegan is taking it a little too far.

This. There is a reason why people have been eating animal products since forever. And the whole wool sock thing really boggles my mind. Why is that necessary?

veganism is so pointless. why starve yourself for no reason. whats wrong with eating dairy products, youre not harming the cow by taking its milk.

I was a vegan for awhile.... but it got too difficult when I moved to Pittsburgh as no one caters to healthy eating here. I'm still a vegetarian and avoid dairy when possible, but cheese is my weakness.

Nutritional yeast should and will become your new best friend. It's a staple IMO in vegan diets and you it has a nutty, cheesy taste, so you can use it to make cheese substitutes (cashews, lemon juice and nut yeast in a food processor).

I'd download an app on your phone like fitnesspal that breaks down your food intake into what vitamins, proteins, sugars, etc, youre getting or keep a journal for the first couple months just so you can monitor and make sure you're getting enough iron, vitamin d, etc. I used fitnesspal until I got the hang of it.

IDK but there's this kid in my history class that's vegan and I want to slap the shit out of him whenever he talks about his vegan bullshit.

Well from my standpoint, it has nothing to do with animals being harmed. I support hunting. Our bodies were not developed to consume dairy after infancy. Think about it, we are the only species on the planet that A. drinks another animals milk and B. drinks milk as an adult. Also, we've recently discovered that bone strength is not strongly linked to calcium, but instead Vitamin D which can be obtained by foods other than dairy products.

I do love myself some cheese, though, and eat it from time to time because it's delicious..... but it is not the healthiest.

When I was a vegan, I felt far from starved. There is some bomb vegan food that even you would enjoy I assure you.

True.... I was just making the argument for why dairy is unnecessary from our diet. I 100% think the human body was designed to run on a diet of plant material AND meat. The issue, in my eyes, is our food system and the way meat is produced. It's nasty. That's why I choose to be a vegetarian and I fortunately have the luxury of taking a vitamin D supplement. In a perfect world, we would all be able to either hunt for out protein or obtain it from sustainable farms.

yes, also you should know that most women at pregnancy develop a hard time staying healthy while being vegetarian. even if they are on supplements.

i know this because a good friend of my parents who is a vegetarian, became pregnant and started losing her hair. even while on prenatal vitamins.

One time this vegan bitch was in my 4th grade class and we were having a thanksgiving feast with turkey and such so this weird chick brings in loads of tofu expecting everyone to eat it so my teacher made everyone have some to make her feel good. It was so gross ewwww.

II'm pretty much in the same boat, 've been vegetarian for about a year and a half, I stopped buying eggs but eat some products that have eggs in them, I drink soy milk but still eat regular ice cream.

Hey man, I'm vegetarian right now, and was vegan for a while a little bit ago.

I found, like vegetarianism, the hardest part was just getting into the grove of what you could eat and getting a good base of quick and easy snacks and meals to make. I didn't have any problems with how my body felt, felt pretty normal. A big tip that I would reccomend starting with that makes it seem less daunting is going vegan during the week and then if you want to eat cheese and stuff on the weekend. For me that made me feel good that I was eating at least 50% less of it but I still wasn't like.. o__o I'm never going to eat cheese again ya know?

Personally I wouldn't worry about the leather stuff. You already have it, it's cool to wear it, and even buy it used imo.

Let me know if you have any other specific questions, and also, goodluck!

I don't get why everyone is so militant and forcing people to take sides on veganism/vegetarianism. As long as people don't try to cram why/why not to be it, I'm fine with it.

question for OP: what are the health benefits of a vegan diet? or is it purely just from a moral/social consciousness standpoint? I'm genuinely interested.

I came in here with the intent of telling you to try being a vegetarian first, but obviously it's what you're already doing. All I can say is be very meticulous about what you put in your body, be especially careful to still have a balanced diet especially since it's so easy to go wrong with a vegan diet. Monitor yourself, and if at any time you start becoming unhealthy, go back to being vegetarian again. That being said, best of luck.

THIS i hate when people, especially bitches go on and on about their fucking vegetarian or vegan lifestyle I'm like bitch no one gives a fuck and she's all like blah blah save animals blah tofu blah blah and then I slap dat hoe wit my meat stick SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST MOTHER FUCKERS /rant

I don't get what makes a person disregard the whole process of evolution of humans eating meat and deciding to go ahead and become vegetarian or vegan. I can understand no dairy though sense Humans technically aren't meant to consume any other type of milk except for breast milk. Hence why everyone is actually slightly lactose intolerant.

Well the main reason is so they can tell everyone about it at every opportunity and/or bitch about every time they are at a restaurant that doesn't happen to serve the right food. The main reason is attention, no argument there.

vegetarian because i dont believe in killing animals for food, especially because ive seen where 90% of meat comes from and its fucking gross. i do enjoy the occasional non-vegetarian chili or burrito.

Well there's the fact that vegans and vegetarians live longer lives

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/12/vegetarians-live-longer-longevity_n_1961967.html?utm_hp_ref=healthy-living

And that a more plant based diet is better for the environment.

Also some people have moral issues with killing and eating animals.

I personally will never go vegetarian but I understand why people would.

when people tell me that people have evolved to eat much and such I don't think they realize how little meat we actually evolved to eat. The reason we like meat so much evolutionarily is because it's packed with fat and protein and that was hard to come by back when we actually had survival pressure. we developed the taste for it so much to make sure that when we could eat it we got as much as we could. that said people today, especially developed nations, eat a tremendous amount of meat. an amount our bodies are not meant to handle as made apparent by rampant heart disease and obesity.

Imagine a meal. Most americans would say that the main dish is meat of some sort. that proportion is already too large. and we imagine eating that for every meal. we eat too much meat.

• have you ever been milked? was it painless?

• research show that humans aren't capable of digesting lactose well after infancy, that's the problem

• eating things which we can't digest properly makes it harder to be healthy

On that note, I do eat milk products, because they're damn nice.
