Anyone have experience with shops doing full ski edge replacements to fix a cracked edge?

Got a cracked edge on my only pair of skis a few days ago. was talking to a local shop to see what they could do and they offered to epoxy it or do a "Full edge replacement". Is there a decent success rate with shops doing this or is it more of a gimmick that will last a few days? Dont wanna waste $75 for a couple more days on the hill
 
Not a full replacement but has part of my edge replaced a few years back. Lasted a few days before it was gone again. Personally wouldn’t even bother trying to replace the edge myself. I just come to terms with the fact that my edges are not coming back and just try to seal them to minimize water getting into the core
 
Yo OP, I replaced a good ~18 inches of edge underfoot and it held up great! I used aviation snips to cut my edge on both ends, then I used a razor knife and chisel to separate the edge from the ski! Several pilot holes, some tiny screws, and an excess of West Systems 6/flex 650 later, my skis were ready to go!

An alternate method for edge repair is to completely remove the edge and create a new one with epoxy. Basically the same steps as above but instead of a new metal edge, you create a form with tape for the epoxy to fill. (See picture)

1083865.jpegIf that picture is the only damage to your edge/sidewall, order some West System G/flex 650, a set of quick clamps, and a file. Slightly pull the edge away from your base and pour some G/flex 650 in there and firmly clamp it for 24 hours and file off the excess. Rinse and repeat for every crack/separation you develop. When the edge fully fails then try an epoxy edge or metal edge.

TL;DR: learn to repair your own stuff and you'll save $$$$
 
I had an edge near the tip get dented in pretty bad. Shop puled the edge out. Maybe replaced 1 foot or so of it. Held up good. Def could feel it when putting pressure there if I was turning but was rideable and was hitting the park.

Underfoot seems like it would be more of an issue.

If you have a cool shop around maybe go talk to the guys and see what they say. Also a case of beers still goes a long way to a cheap repair at a lot of shops.
 
Ski tech here, If you’re actively hitting rails on that pair of skis no it’s not worth it. Save you’re money. Also trying to repair that tiny crack is pointless it would require alot more work to remove the existing edge and replace it.
 
If they are all Mtn skis and you don’t slide rails very much, Getting section of edge replaced by shop might be worth it(full edge replacement doesn’t really exist)

If u slide rails a good bit then here is your best bet….

You need:

one or two woodworking clamps,

two pieces of wood about 1/2” thick, and slightly longer than cracked area.

JB Weld or other solid brand of epoxy

knife or something to pry up edge

pry up affected area of edge and insert epoxy generously

Protect both side of ski with wood pieces and clamp until epoxy is fully cured (I recommended putting packing tape on the face of wood so it doesn’t get glued to the ski)

use file to sand excess epoxy

you’ll be good for at least a week haha. Keep an eye on your edges and fill opening gaps/cracks with JB Weld as they start. Will make dying skis last way longer.
