Anyone cluey with video cameras?

Hey guys I’m just wondering if anyone can help me out with recommendations for purchasing a digital camcorder.

I’ve used quite a few before but never payed them too much attention from a technical perspective.

My preference wouldn’t be anything over $600US (the less the better!)

Basically it’ll just be to get footage of my travels, and a fair bit of riding footage (nothing too professional though – Just for fucking about).

So a camera that’s good for low light and bright light I suppose is what I’m after?

If it could take decent stills that’d be choice, but I’m not expecting too much for that price...

Small enough to fit in a ski jacket/small backpack would be a big plus as well.

I’ve had a few recommendations, but they’ve all either exceeded the price range or have been countered by shit reviews on the net.

Any suggestions for a cheapish rider-handy camera would be muchos appreciated!

(Oh and I’ll have a good laptop with me {DVD burner etc.} so moving clips from tape shouldn’t be too difficult {fingers crossed}, but I still don't know if DV or DVD is better??)

they're pretty much all the same at that price. If you're not looking to make professional looking videos, then spend $300 or so, and get a little Panasonic or whatever DV camcorder with a flip out LCD screen and shoot away.

Ski like you fuck; fast and hard with a stupid grin on your face.

anything by sony or cannon is good. If you buy a different brand at that price don't expect the heads to last more than 50 hours.
