Another What Camera Thread

Hey guys, it would be awesome if anyone could give me some recommendations. Thanks a lot.

1) What is your budget? How much money can you spend right away, and do you think you can get more money to invest in the future?

700ish now. Could get more in the future.

2) What experience do you already have with cameras? Have you ever even used one before? Have you helped your friend out with his camera? Have you owned your own?

I have used some smaller handy cam type video cameras. I also have some experience with D-slrs (photo only though.)

2) What gear, if any, do you currently have? (tripod, old camera lenses, mics, etc)

Tripod, some old slr lenses, a flash.

4) What are you planning to shoot and how do you want to use your camera? Are you going to use this with the sole purpose of shooting skiing? or do you think you might try other stuff as well (movies, documentaries, short films, etc)

Some skiing, but more scenery, biking, nature etc.

5) Do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

I will be doing most of the filming.

6) When filming skiing, how do you tend to shoot? (follow cams, leave it on record on a tripod and hike, film from a tripod, etc)

I don’t use it for that much skiing but mostly on a tripod when I do.

7) What computer do you currently have/use to edit (if not currently editing, what would you most likely use)? If you can provide specifics, such as hard drive space, RAM, processor size, that would be great.

Hp laptop. No clue on the specs.

7) What program do you currently edit on? How familiar are you with it (1- just learning; 10- I can make tutorials and know the keyboard layout)

Premier CS4- I’d say a 4-5

---------------------------Optional Section, for those seeking a more intensive upgrade/purchase------------------------

1) Do you think you might consider using a DSLR?

Yes

2) Do you have any knowledge about the HDSLRS?

Yes, some.

3) Do you know the limitations to using HDSLRS?

Some, but not all that much.

4) Are you willing to take the time to learn about a DSLR, and how to shoot with manual lenses?

Yes.

5) Again, do you want a camera that you can hand to your friends, that could or could not have film experience, and let them shoot you? or will you be doing all the filming?

I’ll be doing it all.

Dude there is a stickied thread on this page, it is right there

wow really? and to OP maybe a t2i depending on what lenses you have. definitely a little over your price range but with your background in photo you'll appreciate the manual controls I think. If not then eheath posted a thread about the panny tm700 (I think) and that could be good too and it's a little cheaper all said and done.

if you're looking specifically for a camcorder, a canon vixia hfs21 would be great, or anything from that series, although it is a bit out of your price range. The hfs series has great video quality with all manual controls, and has autofocus (rebels have shitty autofocus, if any at all).
there's also some lower end models from canon like the hfm300, and since you'd have cash leftover you could get a nice wide to go with it, maybe some other accessories too.
