Another reason Tanner is not competing anymore.

Ok, let me start this off by saying THIS IS NOT MY PERSPECTIVE ON THIS SITUATION THIS IS INDEED A FRIENDS POINT OF VIEW.
So me and my friend who doesn't ski all that often got on the topic of Tanner Hall not doing competitions anymore. They were aware of Tanner Hall's Chads Gap Crash and I made it clear to them how serious Tanner's last crash was. They are also aware of Tanner Dominating the X-Games for the past 10 years and his just how successful he was in pipe. They then reminded me that Xavier Bertoni beat out Tanner last year, and said "maybe Tanner just can't compete with everyone now-a-days" I told them that Tanner was indeed fully capable of competing against them and winning. Then they said that Tanner might just be getting scared since Xavier beat him last year and maybe he just wants to go out on top rather than die down... This got me thinking. Do you guys think that Tanner is just done with competitions because he has had so many injuries and training all the time and pushing your self to learn those new tricks and go bigger has just taken a large toll on his body? or Do you guys think that maybe he is just in fact getting scared that he can't compete with all the new guys and he wants to go out on top?
Just some food for thought. I don't necessarily think that he is getting scared. But good luck on his recovery. In my opinion Tanner has done so much for skiing in general that he could choose either option and I would still respect him equally.

I'd say it would be a combination of a number of factors including those you mentioned..Sure young guns coming through are always going to be a threat and injuries have taken a serious toll on him but maybe he is just sick of the competition scene too.

I don't agree...When Tanner wants somethin he will eat sleep and damn near die to get to that point as many of you have seen. He already showed everyone in the park and pipe whats up but i think his love for the mountains that have so many unopened scenes that people aren't willing to take is where his skiing is headed. I wouldn't know but i am sure that skiing the lines he does and wants to do in AK are much more dangerous and scary then lookin down the pipe or hittin a jump. And Tanner is gonna take mountain skiing to a whole new level. Just wait and see.Much love for T Bless up my ninja...

scared? come on man its tanner. I dont think its about going out on top. He has dominated comps for 10 years, hes injured and he's starting school again. I just think he doesnt have the time.

it's always hard to compete, but a lot of it is that he's looking to simply enjoy skiing more, rather than trying so hard alll the time to train, he can kill the BC and spend his winters doing whatever he wants, whenever he wants, instead of feeling obligated to train.
He also has other goals, such as school, which he's doing now, and building a bigger future for himself.

Tanners got the ability to beat pretty much anyone in pipe, i definatly dont think he's scared, if he wants it bad enough he could beat anyone. so what if he got 2nd in one xgames comp? thats only a reason to try harder. the top guys in every sport arent constantly number 1 in everything they do.
plus, he's been focusing alot on competitions for awhile, i think anyone would wanna get away from that and ski for fun.

do you know what program he is in? i just cant imagine tanner putting on a suit and tie everyday

you could be right... id be scared if i were him. but theres nothing wrong with, as long as tanners doing what he loves thats all that matters

as u said he has dominated for over ten freakin years, if that was me, I'd wanna take a break especially with as much injuries he has had

I think another factor might be that i think pipe puts a larger strain on your acls and there would be a large risk factor trying to train competitively for x games even if he could get 100%healthy by that time. And did you mention to your friend that he dominated the dew tour that consisted of pretty much the same athletes?

Xaiveir probably trained 8 hours a day for months before the xgames, just to beat the man.

Tanner throws some runs in the summer down south, shreds gnar till its time for the comp, then leaves with a medal. I doubt he is scared of not placing well or representing the champion sound when he competes. But I mean, it takes a lot longer as you get older to keep your game at that level, maybe its just not fun anymore. Why ski and do all that work if it isn't fun?

I would hate to be doing that and not be having fun, especially since there doesn't seem to be much chance of olympic pipe in the near future, the clock is pretty close to hour 11 for 2010, then to compete and wait another 4 years? And have only a slight possibility to be at the biggest stage? seems fruitless.

maybe its just time to take a step back, and go in a new direction. It is healthy for your psyche, ego, and for the sport. Every time Tanner Hall makes a move, it seems to have been a good one for not only him, and his grip, but also for the sport itself.

think about that, and maybe just watch what happens next instead of analysing. (ironic I would say that now eh?)

I think it would be super bad ass if pipe got into the 2014 Olympics and Tanner made a Huge comeback and came in first in the first half pipe event in the Olympics. I wish John Symms would have asked him if he would make a comeback if pipe got into the Olympics that in the interview, Or if Tanner would answer that in this thread...

exactly what i was gonna say tanners been here for a long time now and his pyschical health has taken a toll now he wants to go do his own thing and his companies still back him

many factors are involved, but i don't think he is scared, if u would of let him have one more run at X he would of 1 up'd xavier, tanner is seriously capable of destroying any one in pipe, but he likes to keep it interesting, and this year he just one up'd dumont becuase he didnt think any one else could beat that standard.

"They are also aware of Tanner Dominating the X-Games for the past 10 years and his just how successful he was in pipe."
That says it all. give him his respect for sticking through that first injury, now give him thanks for what he has done for our sport. No need to hate for the man passing up some competitions after he has had his decade to reign freestyle skiing. now it is time for a new person.

He's definately not scared. Just try to picture being in his position. He has been at the top forever, he has proven himself to be the best time and time again. Most people would have stopped competing long ago really, I mean for the past how many years has he been considered the best in our sport? What has he had to prove by going out to Xgames and all these competitions year in and year out? He's already the most respected skier out there by most people. I say praise the man for continuing to compete and progress the sport year after year when really he had nothing left to prove. He already came back from one huge injury and dominated for years. I think if he really wanted to he could do it again... but why??? Why not recover and be able to ski for fun for as long as possible rather than risk getting yet another serious injury and be completely screwed

ya but this past year was one of his best. i never thought about your friends outlook until you brought it up. all great people want to be known as "the person that went out on top" not "the person that burned out"

im sure that if there was no tanner xavier wouldnt know what a halfpipe is ,so i dont think he has a reason to be scared,he did his thing let him now enjoy the skiing

I think people are missing the point here: tanner isn't SCARED that maybe kids have moved past him, he's STOKED that kids have moved past him. seems to me that for the longest time, tanner has been comsumed by an obsession to progress the level of his beloved sport. i honestly think that nobody would be happier than him at the likes of xavier, dorey and rolland taking pipe to a new level.

I think its a number of things, with all these injurys its just tough to put your whole self into it. REmember hes not old, he still in his fucking 20's you guys act like hes 40 years old. I think its just that hes found his calling in the backcountry and he rather put all his time into going big in the backcountry and putting out great segments.

i think T Hall realizes that he can make a living skiing whatever he wants. So he is gong to ski pow and big mountain over park and comps. This will also keep him from getting injured less and have a longer career

He realized he had enough gold medals, now he wanted to shred pow for the rest of his life, and now he will. For people who have never skied in 3-4ft.+ of fresh, you don't understand how much better it is than shredding a park or pipe.

like he said in his interview he rather look forward to dhredding pow instead of dealing with the stress that comes with preparing for a comp

or he finally relized that the way contests are judged has nothing to do with talent and its all about your name at the x games and most other big name comps

After further evaluation, I think we can all agree that TANNER IS NOT SCARED haha.

Look.. the guy just loves skiing and he's gonna do what he wants to do... thats about all there really is to it and I think we all know that.

in my opinion he made the right decision.

i would love to see more pros ditch the perfectly groomed parks to be in the mountains. The BC is really where skiing started, and i think over the last few years the sport has leaned way too far in the direction of competition. Regardless of his reasons, i give him props and hope he inspires skiers of all ages to go out and explore! To me, skiing is being out in the mountains, and exploring new terrain with your friends.

well, maybe im just stoked to see more BC footage in movies

whatever the reasons he has, i think tanner has done enough in his time competing to retire from comps without losing his status in the industry. it is a good place for him to be, he seems happy with how his career is progressing. look at his past few seasons to see what part of skiing is getting his stoke up.

it would be rad to see him come back and compete should ski halfpipe be an event at the 2014 games, but that is 5 years from now, putting him up in the thirty range. 5 years off and a thirty year old body could make it tough, but as we've all see, if anyone can achieve what he wants, it's tanner.

psh. scared. your friend is an idiot. you should stop being friendly until he/she apologizes in an open letter to NS.

on another note...

nomen- when i lived in wisco up through college, i spent most of my time in the park (once they started buliding them, yes kids, i'm that old) because there was nothing else to do, unless we went to the up or something. now that i am in utah, the only time i go through the park is if it is on the way to where i want to go and i feel like a 360 train with some friends. park is fun, but powder is so much more of what i like about the sport.

SOMETIMES YOUR DUMBNESS AMAZES ME, TANNER IS MOVING ON TO THE REAL SHIT IN SKIING, NOT SAYING WINNING X GAMES ABUNCH ISN'T REAL, BUT TANNER IS GONNA MURDER AK LIKE NO ONES SEEN BEFORE FOR YEARS TO COME ITS NOT THE END OF A BOOK BUT A NEW CHAPTER...... YEAH TANNER KEEP UP BROTHHA CAPS FOR T

everyone needs to think about this for a minute...
Michael Jordan- retired from professional basketball.Lance Armstrong- once retired from professional road cycling.
the best are human, too... nothing lasts forever. i think it's safe to say Tanner would be put, in his own regard, among that company when all that he's done for the sport and the level he's competed at for so long is considered. lately, he's suffered massive injury and was already slowing down his competition season. with other doors of opportunity opening and the sport taking a toll on his body, it only makes sense for him to begin the next chapter of his skiing career.
i don't see why this is such a big deal... we have 10 years worth of highlight reels to be thankful for and the powder-filled future doesn't look too shabby, either.

interesting point, both the athletes you mention did the comeback thing.

with the halfpipe in 2014 a possibility (however slight), would you (the general ns you, not just you personally) like to see t hall get back on the horse for that?

jordan was never the player he was when he came back to play for the wizards, it would be sad to see that happen to t hall. even worse if he destroyed his credibility with a brett fucking favre move.

Tanner's film segments are equally as important as him competing, if not more significant. What he's doing outside of X-games and Dew Tour is so much sicker than winning a pipe comp.

he doesnt need to compete anymore hes already proven that hes at the top for those categories and shit lke that now he just wants to push it in ak and stuff like that... something simon cant do

freestyle skiing takes a toll on your body and your body cant take it forever. It is for the same reason that professional football players rarely have a career longer than 15 years.

as he said " i dont want to come back and ski ice" he could win if he wanted to he is the best skier out there maaaaybe he just wants to go and do his own thing and go ski big lines in the pow or w.e. and we can all respect that..

man, if i had the option between slamming into the deck of a pipe or a groomed landing on a slight mistake and slamming into 4 feet of powder i would definitely give up competitions. especially when he is already so well known and has plenty of xgames wins under his belt.
