I have a canon T3i i take a lot of pictures of landscape like this,

View attachment 478355

and pictures of my friends and stuff, but i also film skiing and snowboarding in the winter and i currently have a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 and the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and i want a lens for my filming of course and i am also looking for a micro lens

SHOOT ME YOUR IDEAS!!

Thanks!

umm when filming i want something that can keep a clear image though out and more of a wider image and picture taking I'm not exactly sure my 17-55 is a little floppy but it works for now I've been thinking of selling it but i don't know what other lens i want and its my all around lens

Get a fast prime. I'm say go with a 50mm but because you have a crop sensor go with something around a 28mm-35mm to get a 50mm equivilent, for example.

^I have heard great things about all three of those lenses, especially the rokinon/samyang.

Or save your money and eventually upgrade both of your lenses to a tamron 17-50 and a canon 70-200 F4L, then maybe get a fast prime, that would be a pretty good setup.

If you have any questions feel free to pm me.

For the wider image for video, definitely have a look at the Tokina 11-16mm. It is an awesome wide angle lens, everyone will recommend it to you.

To replace your 18-55mm, it really depends on what you are looking for. I think there are three upgrade paths you need to consider:

  • Prime lenses (fixed focal length): They are inexpensive, have high image quality, great low-light performance and make it easier to throw backgrounds out of focus. For that you sacrifice the ability to zoom. Have a look at 30mm or 35mm prime lenses, this is a great focal length for a first prime because it is very natural and versatile. Usually they also have great macro performance.
  • Focal range: The opposite is to consider a wider focal range like a 15-85 or 18-200 type lens. You won't get better images than your 18-55 though, and often the image quality will get worse (less sharp and more distorted). I would only go down this path if you need a compact travel set up.
  • Aperture range: A solution that sits in between the previous two is to stay with your current focal range but get a lens with a larger, fixed aperture. A lot of people will recommend the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 for example. You'd get closer to the performance of a prime lens while keeping the flexibility of your current 18-55.

Personally, I'd recommend you try an inexpensive prime to see what the fuss is about, before committing to more expensive lenses.

Yea I've definitely been thinking about upgrading to a tamron 17-50 and i was gonna get the 70-200 F4L but i was about $300 away and i needed a lens before i went to norway for the whole summer, but this crop sensor thing what is that? is take away the wideness of the picture? or? and this might sound stupid but so my 18-55mm lens goes down to 18 mm so my question how does the for instance 28-35mm show a bigger picture is the curvature of the glass on the lens

THANKS!

Thanks for all the help and right now i don't have a budget exactly I'm probably willing to spend around 600 at most, I'm working over the summer and gonna save up some cash for a lens for next season

you can get a tokina 11-16 then, but it's reallyyyyy wide. a 12-24 f/4 is a little more versatile range, but i'm not sure how the tokina 12-24 performs. canon doesn't make one for some reason, but the nikon version is awesome.

When I'm hiking, I generally never take my mid-range zoom off my camera (28-80)

They can be very expensive though.

For skiing, if you want something wider, get something wide, like the Tokina.

an 80-200 is a pretty essential lens for photos of skiing or sports, and is very useful for outdoorsy stuff as well. I almost never use a UWA when I'm not shooting interior spaces or sports stuff.

prioritize what you will use more, and what you feel like you'll have the most fun with, and go there.

i will use the wider lens mostly for video and some pictures, and i would like a 24mm or something like that where i can take pics at true 50mm or at least almost and film with it, and right now I'm gonna stick with my 70-300 and my 18-55 until i decide to sell my 18-55 and buy a Tokina 17-50 to replace that one

Get an Olympus 28mm f/3.5 for your landscapes and ski filming. That will set you back 40-50$ and open a whole new world to you.

Search on eBay for the lens I said above. And then also buy an:

'OM EF adapter' from ebay (the cheapest ones work flawlesly. What these adapters do is let you use non-Canon lenses on your Canon camera.

What have you heard? Everyone I know uses adapters and adapts lenses to different cameras. Some cameras don't work as well as others with adapters but, canon works great.

idk just that you get bad quality, but for my followe shots i will be buying a wider angle, and then i will use my 70-300 for my longer tripod shots for the interesting angles, but i still cannot decide what lens i want to buy!!

I dunno who the fuck you talked to, but they're 100% wrong. Im so confused on what you even need a lens for right now, be more concise.

haha some old guy, but i think i would trust NS more, im in need of a wider angle lens for my follow cam shots, my 18-55 just isnt doing what i want, but im really lookin into the tokina 11-16 what do you guys think? I have only heard good things.. but evan you own one dont you? how do you like it? any regrets? would you choose something else to replace it?

No way, tokina 11-16 is by far the BEST wide angle lens on the market. The only alternative would be a nice fisheye lens like a nikon 10.5, tokina 10-17 or canon 15mm. but, i prefer the wide angle look, fisheye is nice sometimes but i'm not into distortion unless in certain situations.

yea same here i am not into fisheye look at all, definetely looking for a more wide angle look, so ill probably get one of those when i find a good price for one! thanks for all the help, its awesome that a guy like you evan, answer posts, because your videos are awesome and i look up to you!!! Thanks a lot!!!
