Another detuning thread

Yo, so I know no matter what ski you ride you will get edge cracks, my question is how effin much are you detuning like literally rounding the edge out or just knocking the sharp edge slightly off. Ive ridden skis no tune and destroyed those edges. Then ridden skis with edges I thought I dulled the piss out of but still nonetheless edge cracks in a few days. Hell I'm on day 14 about to lose 4inches of edge. On to the second part, how many of yall ride edgeless and just epoxy the side wall? Is it the way im hitting rails, only do a hand full of disasters so don't think its that. Maybe I just land heavy after my pop? Let me hear what you think NS.

Btw did anyone else's poll button disappear from threads?

I go and ask for a park detune make sure you specify under foot and they normally come back to my rounded of not just slightly less than rounded, and joe shmo at the shop should know how but make sure you are taking them to a shop you trust I mean you probably payed a good chunk of change for your set up you should always check out the shop before giving them to them to work on

Detuning isn't just a one time thing, you have to keep up on it a little bit and file of burrs and other rough points a decent amount, shouldn't have to go full 45 from the base just round them

no doubt that probably plays a part in it since i dont fuck with the burrs at all they probably just crack through oh well

I file them down till I'm happy and haven't had a problem with cracks, however I only ever ride rails/park, don't have the opportunity to ride pow and long piste.

I don't really ski runs on my park skis because my hill has 175ft vert or less, so i take a file and be fairly aggressive for 5 minutes, then a diamond stone for 5 minutes, then a gummy stone for about 2 1/2 minutes and maybe go back for another minute on each if i feel like i want more. Ill come back after about 15 days to detune a little more again, but not a lot. I just got my first edge crack a few days ago after a season and 1/2. Im almost strictly rails too

Funny story. I never got my edges detuned. I skied them for a year then decided to try park. So they were pretty dull at that point and just got duller as time went on and I never had a problem sticking or catching.

Then I ended up getting a park tune/detune last year. This year I got my bindings mounted at center(moved up a good 6-7 cm or so) and tried to hit park and caught like a mother fucker since that part of my ski wasn't detuned. It was lols. So if you get your bindings remounted at center or moved up quite a bit, it's a good idea to have them detuned. Don't pull a me and die lmao.

If I dont have a gummy stone can I just use a file?

always used file, but i recommend using gummy stone or dimaondstone or both after the file as just the file tends to leave lots of burrs which causes you to catch on rails. Some people say sand paper can work too but I don't know how trustworthy that is

What skis do you have?

When I broke a binding and had to get new ones, the shop I took them to gave me a free coat of wax and sharpened my edges because they said my skis were so beat up. After they did that I had to file the edges, But I didn't do anything special. I just rounded em off with a file pretty far so I wouldn't have to do it again and I haven't had any problems catching except for one hill with shit rails. Hitting rails pretty much keeps em worn down enough they stay rounded and I haven't touched them since.

This ^ I did this except not with a diamond stone and i still don't have an edge crack. granted I don't exclusively ride rails

Detuned or not my edge always gets worn at about a 45 degree then the edge gradually falls away. Seems like I need to physically round off the edge way more than I do. I hit it for about 30 seconds with a file lol. All I ever needed to do on a snowboard so figured it may work out.

The pair I decided not to detune, tline has a wide down flat down that's more of a down up down. I caught so fucking hard went chest first at the down... That point on I always slide flat rails and boxes for about a day before I trusted the edges for burlier rails
