Im a senior, and kinda having a hard time making a decision. Im hoping some of you have attended, or know something about some of these schools. Any input is appricated.

I currently have a 3.75 GPA, with a few advance classes and pretty good SAT scores. I live in Juneau AK, and im planning on going my freshmen year here at UAS, then i want to transfer out and experience something new. Im hoping to find a school that is apart of the WUE program, because i would save a lot of money. Im thinking possibly going for some sort of business degree, but thats far from set in stone.

MSU was one of the top few on my schools, but they dont accept transfers with the WUE program... and i really want to try something culturely new, but thats not near as important as skiing. ive got tons of family in montana, spent a good bit of time there, lots of my family (including both parents graduated there). ive got friends there who seem to all love it.

The top schools are maybe narrowed this down to:

Fort Lewis College, CO. - University of Nevada, Reno. - University of Utah. - Utah State University.

There was a 'college fair' today in my town. The only school that had a rep there on that list was University of Nevada, Reno. I really like what i was being told from the rep, but i want to hear from some of you hopfully. I really liked to idea of abroad study at Reno.

There was a few reps from CO there (not from Fort Lewis). They kind of turned me off on Mesa State College, and all the Denver schools (three that share a campus). But if you know something about these, or any other CO school let me know.

Thanks and +Karma.

Same situation here, look into western washington, its pretty small but its close to baker, decent school, and the town is really chill.

Durango was where I saw my first protest while driving down the street haha. Lots of hippies (as most schools in CO). Spent a weekend there and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the ass though. I was expecting more "Durangatangs".

dont go to UNR or utah state. U of U is real solid i love it here and everyone i know who skis (which is literally everyone) loves it here too.

I am from Ft. Collins CO and my room mate is from Grand Junction-We both go to Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff- both on WesternUnionExchange too.
My room mate went to Mesa State his 1st year, he liked it, but it was small and he grew up in GJ so he wanted to leave. A lot of kids I went to high school with went to Fort Lewis and most of them are not in school any more.
I was indecisive between Montana State and NAU, I am now a junior at NAU and it's sick. It's a mountain town with a little mountain

thanks everyone, and +karma...

i have a buddy at U or U, and he loves it. what is wrong with utah state? a friend of mine went to the campus and he said it was really sick... im gonna try to narrow it down, and go to the last few campuses on the list to decide for sure, so both of those i could see when i make the trip to utah.

also can you elaborate on UNR? tahoe is like 20 miles or so away, and Squaw the guy was saying has legit terrain and snow, and there are tons of parks. the school seems to be pretty good too, and the abroad studying sounds like something i might like to try for one year...

i dont really care if theres a high drop out rate, im cofident in myself, as far as Fort Lewis goes. i was more wondering what people think of the school, culture(sounds like mostly hippys haha, i would really stand out then) around the school, and skiing...

My friend goes to Fort Lewis, he loves it so far. It's got to be the coolest campus experience haha.

Like an hour and a half to this:

Among others.

thanks for the input. i think im liking Uof U and Utah state more, and UNR. so that leaves three on the list...

i toured utah state a couple years ago, location seemed awesome but i didn't feel a great atmosphere on campus. I was looking into grad school so i might have missed some of the undergrad feel; but thats my two cents. Also i ended up at WSU which is in the middle of wheat fields (but only a couple hours from Schweitzer) so don't listen to me to close

I would say you should narrow it down to U of U and UNR. U of U would be sick because you have awesome resorts 30 minutes away and a nice-sized city. I went to UNR and really enjoyed it. The education was pretty good, and the nightlife great since its only a couple blocks from downtown. USAC is based here, and lots of students take advantage of it. It also has a nice campus with an unbelievable library and student union. The resorts are close as well: Northstar & Rose 35 min; Squaw, Alpine Meadows, Boreal, and Sugarbowl are all around 45 minutes away. Plus, nothing compares to Lake Tahoe, its an amazing sight and makes for great summer activities.

Go to the best rated college you can get into. All college is good for is getting you a job, that's it, especially if you are looking into a business degree. Your life will be much easier if you go to a school that is heavily recruited from and opens doors down the road.

i hear ya, but im kinda in a unique situation. next august im buying my own commercial fishing boat, itll be near the end of my 5th season gillnetting. thats why im going to UAS (beside i love southeast alaska, amazing skiing, and i have a dope sled here i just bought). I cannot afford to go to an out of state college my freshmen year because of the loan ill need to pay off from the boat, and ive saved up a lot, so the loan will be small, but ill nearly broke my freshmen year. so im already going to be running my own business, but its seasonal, only mid june through august. ill pay off my boat loan my first full summer (after freshmen year), and then go to school out of state for a business degree.

the main points to that is i dont need opportunitys like your saying as much as some. the main reason im going to college is because i want to keep pushing myself skiing, and push harder. and without insurance that would be insane, but my dad has been a state empolyee for over 20 years, so can be covered by his insurance for four years after highschool, but only if im in college. other than that i want to keep my doors open after i cant ski hard anymore, and a business degree might help me out along the way. so the plan is start my own fishing business while going to college, get out of college and ski 9 months a year while running my boat in the summer. if all goes to plan ill be a non broke ski bum haha.

maybe ill sell out when my body starts breakin down, and the degree will help me get another job, but i wont be recruited from college

Meh, no one wants to live in logan, shits far away, if you gonna go to school in utah, go to the U, its the most college like college in utah, and for the hater we probably party just as much as you do at your college. At utah state, you will probably get pretty bored and be real pissed you're driving an hour and a half to PC and the cottonwoods, but it is 30? mins to snowbasin or powdermountain, maybe 45.

just curious, were there fly bed trampolines, water ramps, ect around UNR? kinda random but the recruiter was saying that they are adding facilities to Squaw becasue they want to have the olympics there again.

is there good transportation to the resorts from campus? or would i need a car to ski every chance i had?

ive narrowed it down to U of U and UNR now... Utah state dosent sound like what im looking for as much.

its going to be a toughy...

im only not going to be calling my home alaska for a few years, and i want to experience somethign different, to give me a different perspective on what i have here. washington, no hate, seems like it would be a toned down, over populated version of alaska. thanks for the idea, and +karma, but i ruled oregon and washington off the list from the start.

Um i lived in Reno for about 15 years and UNR is about 45 minutes away from TAHOE what more could you ask for? it also depends on what you want to do. I go to Montana state in bozeman because of the skiing as well as the architecture program, as reno does not have one. Reno has an excellent engineering program, geology, mining, and surprisingly, nursing. I have many friends that go there and you should throw me a PM if ya want some more info on UNR or MSU.

im in utah and alot of my friends go to the u of u. i dont really know much about this place education wise but i know that there are pretty much unlimited choices for skiing within an hours drive of slc.

haha, obiviously not. i just want to see a different-ish culture first hand. and still have good mountains, i know nothing will beat alaska, im not expecting it to (even the kid i know at U of U said so). i just really feel sometimes like i could just pack everythign up and just go, move somewhere new (mostly feel this not during ski season). just to see what its like. i was born and raised in AK, and couldnt love it more. im way stoked that my best childhood memorys werent what i consider lame like roller costers, or fairs, concerts, pro sport games, or hay rides. mine are stuff like skiing, hunting, surviving sketchy storms, fishin next to brown bears, ect. i figure if im ever going to see the other side of the coin, its probably going to be when im young, and in college.

yeah, to each his own. i deffinetly love backcountry and big mountain the most, but i also love park haha. so getting to ski a few seasons at a legit park would still be pretty sick. its a give and take sort of thing.

ohhh well if you're after park then those places are rad. I heart Utah is crackalackin for that sort of thing, you should check it out.

let me hit you wit some knowledge....1 year ago i was in your exact situation almost. im from ny and chose to go to school at U of Utah and its fucking bomb. if your going to live and go to school in utah you best bet is salt lake city it is where the most stuff is going on. There is a really large group of skiers that seem to all chill and party together which makes for alot of fun. the mountains are less than 30 minutes away from campus. I would not suggest living in reno for the fact that its a shit hole, yes squaw valley is close (45 minutes) but your going to be spending the majority of your time in reno not tahoe. plus utah has a good buisness program.

yeah, they both have good business programs, but im thinking the same thing. the person i know there said his freshmen year he only took classes 2 days a week and skied 5. now he said he will only be skiing 3-4, but thats still pretty good for being in college.

my dad, brother, and sister in law all went to utah state and loved it, dirt cheap and contrary to popular belief there actually is stuff to do in logan. Im thinking about going there next year under ROTC scholarship
