Anglers of NS

hey everyone, i am writing a speech for one of my classes about the use of lead weights and barbed hooks. now, this speech is an informative one, not an argumentative speech. because of this i need to say some benefits for them. the barbed hooks are easy to find info for but i am having trouble finding the benefits for lead weights other than them being cheap. if you people have any helpful information about lead weights (or barbed hooks), please share! +K if link provided.

also, general fishing thread. who is hyped to get a line out this season?

I didn't think lead weights were actually "lead" anymore.

I have no idea about either, because I fly fish and only use barbless hooks.

A handful of states still allow the sale of lead weights (plus you can buy them online). My understanding is that lead is cheaper and quite a bit heavier than similar alternatives like brass or steel. Tungsten is as good or better but is super expensive. I know lead weights under 1oz are illegal in VT, NH, MA and ME, the 4 states I fish in. Pretty sure over 1oz is still legal, they got rid of the smaller sizes because they are the most likely to accidentally be consumed by birds and other animals.

The one real advantage of barbed hooks is that you lose less fish. I fly fish as well and only use barbless hooks no matter what the regulations say. I do use weight when nymphing but I use alternatives like tungsten, steel and brass.

don't bobber fish w/ a flyrod much or use lead cept for wire occasionally tyin

don't debarb my streamers or big dries.

if your'e competent with your catch and release practices and hemos no real need imo.

poor fish handling and overplaying results in much more mortality

Going barbless is great, as long as you always keep tension you will never lose the fish because of the hook. Also it doesn't mess up the fish in the process

Ya as long as you dont let the fish swallow the hook ir absolutely tear the hook out barbs really arent that bad. Just gotta get the fish back in quick and dont do anything that will remove the slime.... i cringe when i see pictures if fish laying on carpet decks of boats

im thinking about trying barbless this season, but i dont think im going to switch completely unless i really like it. the biggest factor for me in that decision is pulling the hook from my thumb if the bass feels like becoming siamese twins with me. this happened more than usual last summer haha

lead weights of any size are legal to sell and buy in Canada, but there are some restrictions on their use. Can't use them in National Parks and provinces have their own regulations. But for the most part they're fine to use.

I don't entirely agree with this due to the obvious and think anglers and merchants should more towards non-lead products, but I'm also not for an outright ban on them. Just stricter regulation. Furthest I'd want it to go would be banning smaller sizes in waters less than 200 feet deep.

what the hell are you doing that youre being stuck that much? Ive never had one go barb deep into me and i dont even use a net unless im in a tournament... i reach over the edge of the boat and grab em out of the water. sound more like you just need to get better at holding the fish...

i really havent gotten stuck a lot, last summer was just the first time its happened to me... once in the shoulder, once because i told my friend not to pick up the rod while i was untangling it from another rod in my trunk(he picked it up anyways and i got the hook in my thumb) then the third time i was holding a chub and it had a spasm and put one of the trebles into my thumb almost to the barb.
