i know many of you fellows ski at alta and I am going to purchase an alta season pass, if i were to choose to ski backcountry would it be smart to get a beacon or is the lift accesible skiing just as good and I'll avoid buying a beacon?
 
f you ski bc you should always have a beacon and avy training no matter where you are.... the skiing in alta is good, but bc is fun.
 
picachu, the alta bc is much much different than the good ol' hike to the top of whatever the hell that one peak is called at park city. definitely get a beacon and you definitely need to know what you're doing. i don't want you and wyatt dying on me now!
 
wtf! stowebum are you some fly on the wall. you need to put more effort into your own personal life before getting so involved in everyone elses.
 
I know its way different from the Jupiter peak hike, which is like maybe 1 1/2 miles. If we go to Alta its like super long hikes up the fucking mountain. I guess we should probably take avalanche classes. Thats a good idea. Anyway, we probably won't be doing much hiking because of Mack Dawg.
 
It's the real deal...don't just take off through the gates around Alta like it's no big thing. Many people have spent their lives getting to know the area. It's different than other backcountry spots.

what's a mack dawg? I have taken a avalache class b4 , I know how to work a beacon, looking at the snow pack is key and doing like a tap test with a shovel. But is the inbounds terrain awesome as well or is it worth the purchase of a beacon and shovel? since I'll be there every time it snows
 
They sure as hell didn't get started by asking a bunch of 14-15 year old's online for advice. There are very few people on NS who have even ventured into the backcountry. I think if you ski in Alta, you need a beacon, there are a lot of days every season I ski in bounds with one. And one more piece of advice...find someone who knows the area well and start going out with them from time to time. In my opinion that would be the best thing you could do.

But then again, what do I know.

 
i am even implamenting a rule this year. if i am in the BC shooting... no beacon, you can't come. and you need to know how to use it. i don't want to die cause somebody doesn't know how to use a beacon and probe.
 
hahaha. wyatt, you're in trouble if you think that is a hard hike. and the jupiter peak hike is maybe 1/4 mile. you're going to be busting your ass to get anywhere at alta. you two should just start skiing at alta inbounds, learn the area, meet some people, then slowly venture out of some of the gates. you can come tag along with me and jordan on some days and i'll point you in the right direction. just don't bring max or tosh.
 
if your ventuirng into the backcountry with little or no knowledge your putting others at risk to. im not the most technically knowledgeable to begin with but to me no one should be in the bc w/ out avalanche cirtification, becons probes, knowledge of the mountains, and of course common sense its no real joke and from wat i have heard the pack in utah can get really sketchy sometime so be careful and start learning/preparing befor you go into the bc
 
why you got to hate dog? that aint right. and you know that they have avy trainging and all the shit. they took classes last year dog.
 
haha j lo. wrong justin. we have some dual names on this little corner of the internet.

and no offense to max and tosh, but i just don't want to be involved in a fight on the ski hill where someone gets a ninthnard ski chop to the neck because max can't keep his cool. i'm sure they could probably rescue me in an avi, but i would rather take my chances with someone who is a little more sober than they are.
