I can't help, but have fun. Alta is a great mountain. As far as backcountry do you have the knowledge to go back there? This is not a place to mess around so make sure you have the gear and knowledge to venture out of bounds. Best of luck, enjoy the mountain. I remember going out west when I was young, you will get a chance to ski much better terrain than where you are from.

Chat people up on the lift. If they look like they rip, ask of you can tag along for a lap... If they blow you away, find someone else to ski with next lap.

Asking to tag along for a lap is how you find ski buds for the day, especially at areas new to you. Just make sure to ask in the 2nd half of the lift ride after making some quick small talk about skiing to show you aren't gaping too hard. Be prepared for the dude or gal to try and scare you a bit on the first lap... They want to see if you can hang.

As for boogers, just traverse out to an area, and stomp out a little takeoff. Then lap that as part of your lap. Don't waste a day building and hiking. Use the natural features to pop off and send. It's easy to get creative on natural features.

You picked a good time. 1-2ft forecasted by monday AM. Just make sure to get an early start. Holiday powdays are an absolute madhouse across the state.

Ha who cares about madness, Alta is in a different ballpark when it comes to crowds, sure its busy but just get to first chair an hour before it opens, and enjoy some amazing powder skiing for 2 hours then explore. The masses goto Park City and the Bird. Alta thins out by 12. Seriously though, get to first chair at least an hour earlier on a powder.

Don't go into the backcountry.

You're allowed to build inbounds, but it's a waste of time at alta - there's so many natural hits. There's other good advice in this thread - asking people to tag along for a lap is great if you can keep up but don't expect people to wait for you! If they leave you behind, don't take it personally. There's an unspoken rule that everyone keeps up or meets up later, they aren't intentionally ditching you. Most people at Alta are really nice, down to earth skiers that are out there because they love it. Very different vibe than other resorts I've been to, which is why I ski there every season.

Again - don't go into the backcountry.

Looking for some Utah/Alta advice as well. I'm heading out for three days over the 3-5 of February and was thinking of doing the Ski City 3 day pass (Alta, Snowbird, Solitude, Brighton). You can only ski one resort per day with the pass so looking for advice.

I've been to Alta before and loved the terrain so definitely Alta and snowbird for one day each.

Advice to you op, what everyone else has said is true, I experienced it last year. Found some guys that shred hard and could barely keep up, but in the end I learned some cool spots and had fun with them. Just be friendly, everyone there is sweet.
