i've always had an interest in hip hop/beats/electronic music, and i've always wanted to get into some music making. but i'm looking for something more involved than garage band, but then again something that won't break the bank. any suggestions?

The best thing that comes to my mind is Logic Pro X as it is far cheaper than most comparable DAWs at 200 dollars. Ableton is considered by some to be the best but is extremely expensive and doesn't to my knowledge at least really offer that much more. Right now I use logic mainly with some Native Instruments plugins as well as Maschine. If you have any more questions I might be able to help you

Hey I'm in to pretty much the exact same stuff, I got turntables(Numark IDJ pro) a while ago and have gotten fairly decent. But the best thing I can say is Abelton live free 30 day trial and see if u can figure it out, it was quite complicated for me. Logic Pro X is much easier I've heard but still very interactive. Right now I've been using an app on my iPad called, Beat Maker 2, and its helping learn the basics of making music, but defiantly takes some time... haha hope that helps

If you want a DAW that's decently powerful and does everything but tempo changes and routing, check out Acoustica Mixcraft. Super easy to figure out and use and comes with a ton of pretty good virtual instruments. Costs $90 tho.

if you want a full-fledged DAW that can handle tempo changes, routing and anything else you can throw at it, check out a program called Reaper. It takes a while to figure out how everything works and doesn't have too many VIs but you can add all sorts of free ones easily. It does come with a great suite of virtual effects though. Also, if you stick with the trial version, it's FREE. There are also no limitations to the trial version vs. the full version. After 30 days or x amount of time it'll try to get you to buy it but just keep clicking "still evaluating" and you can keep using the full software free of charge.

anyways here're the links if you're interested

Reaper is $50 for a full license and it's just as capable as any other DAW. It's one of the most easily-configurable DAWs too. Tycho uses it for everything he does.

At this point they're all good, so the best DAW is the one that enables your creative process. Having said that, you won't find a better deal than Reaper for the price.

I just use the demo of fl studio, idk if you can use plugins for it, but some of the fruity loops plugins are great. Great for making hip hop beats.
