Advice on which skins to buy

I need some advice on which skins to buy for a pair of Faction 4.0’s. They’re about 5 years old, the blue and white ones.

Ive never bought skins before, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It really depends on your local conditions.

the 4.0's are what... 118 underfoot? I'm guessing these are only going to be used as a super-deep pow day tool, and you arent worried about negligible weight differences. This makes it easy.

If you have heavier, wetter snow where you are, get 100% Nylon. If you have lighter, colder snow where you are, get a mohair mix skin. If you just want better traction overall, go 100% Nylon.

All the skin makers are putting pretty decent stuff on the market. I have been using G3s and BD skins for years and both are pretty great offerings. Ive also used Pomocas and theyre great too. You kinda cant go wrong my friend.

My best advice is to go to a ski/running store and ask directly with intent to buy. They will even cut the skin for you for free if you are nice enough. I picked up a pair of glide skins from a roll. Saved 80$ by doing that!

I love Pomoca skins. Never go wrong, but never let the glue touch snow or water! They smell amazing out of the box too.

ya, i feel like the best option for me is buying blank, uncut skins in the material of choice, then adding my preferred tip and tail clips is the way to go. everyone is different and likes what they like. i prefer glue to glue fold over as opposed to rivets, seems to be going out of style though. def look at skimo . com and bsmp regardless

How experienced are you skinning? as a first set of skins, I would almost always recommend going full nylon- they grip better, are much cheaper, and help you work on technique- especially since with prodigy 4.0s, you arent exactly gonna be winning any skimo races. You can get a pair for dirt cheap from backcountrys outlet store as long as your skis are between 170-184 long. I can help you find a deal on some full nylons if your skis are outside that length.

One note on sizing- you want to buy a width of skin that matches (or is close to) the widest part of your ski. Even though the prodigys are like 118 underfoot, the widest is the tip, which is 140mm. While its not important that you cover every square inch of the base, you probably want to buy a 140 or at least a 130 wide skin.

your first pair i would buy full nylon, and go ask someone to teach you how to cut them. thatll help so much further down.

but, i cant think of a time in the future I will not be buying the pomoca pink (free pro 2.0). they are the best skin I have ever owned.
