Advice on Treckers

Well i know i would probably get more of a response on TGR but the NS format is way easier for me...

So im probably getting some of these puppies and ive herd that they dont work too well with certain bindings... i would use these on rossi and look bindings, so im wondering if it would be good for those. Also those of you who have these/ know someone who has these, how do they like them?

I figured they are a good substitute if you dont want a full AT setup..

you can't use them on the lowest postion with the dildo style look and rossi bindings. you pop yourself right out. they aren't that bad if you make sure they fit tight in your bindings, otherwise they will come out every few minutes. being so high off the ski is shitty for side-hilling, so don't do too much of that.

916's are more popular than P18's with the big mountain crowd because they work much better with treckers.

there are two different "climbing posts" that raise your heel futher off the ski for increased uphill performance. you can normally also choose not to use any of these "climbing posts", which is really nice for skinning on the flats and mellow uphills. but if you have the dildo style look or rossi bindings, your heel will come down too far and cause you to release.

so in other words you will always have to have your heel raised up if you are going to be using those bindings. it's not all that bad, especially if there are minimal flats in your route and it still beats hiking.

oh okay then.. yeah i figure most hiking will be going up the hill and not much flats.. Thanks dude +karma

Seconding what he said. Also the work better for lighter people with smaller boot sole length because of less tourque

bump.. im most likely gettin some soon so any more advice would be grand! +karma for anyone with some advice.

thanks

I have a friend who uses a pair with px 12s (I believe. theyre at least that look/rossi style with the dick at the back). he seems to like them well enough. I was planning on getting a pair, but after looking into it a bit and asking people, Ive decided to drop teh extra cash for some freeride pluses. the weight difference is huge, so if you're looking to do longer stuff, that's a consideration. I also asked some older, experienced big mountain skiers/mountaineers what they thought. they said theyre alright, but especially for traversing or doing steeper ascents they are not a lot of fun. AT setup? you can use most AT binders with regular boots (except dynafit), so basically you could get either some AT bindings only, put them on whatever skis and go trekking, using your old boots. in the end, I personally think that the $200 or so difference between trekkers and freerides is worth it. especially when you could have inserts in your skis if you want multiple skis to be able to trek. but, if this is what you want (and I dont think it's a bad idea), then I think they will work pretty well with those bindings and you will have lots of fun. Sorry if some of this has been said, I only read some of the responses as it is late and im tired.

P.S. check out climbingskinsdirect.com if you dont already have skins. and learn to use avy gear/always take it with you.

thanks for all of that dude... are those freeride pulses an AT binding then? i like the fact that with the treckers i can use them on various skis..

that is a nice feature, but you still have to have an alpine binding on all of those skis. if you were to get, say, some ON3Ps (Im not trying to tell you to, I just know that you know about them), you could likely get inserts put into them, maybe at a small extra cost or some beers or whatever. someone else would know about putting inserts in already finished skis like you would buy from a ski shop. i dont know if that can be done. it might be an option though, if you want to switch one pair of bindings between multiple pairs of skis.

keep in mind you will need a different skin for each set of skis you use your trekkers on. (i think?)

skins are atleast 90$.

the only positive i can see from trekkers is not being worried about breaking a light weight AT binding. (duke solves this)

other than that they seem flimsy and awkward, never tried them though.

dukes are heavy. and i think you said your on the small side, so breaking them maybe isnt a huge issue. I know a guy that rips hard on his freerides and is like 200+ pounds and has had no problems. not to say the dukes dont look rad. im kinda interested in them, but i think the freerides are fine for (nearly) everybody, and way lighter. i dont know a ton about this stuff though. this is just what i have observed/learnt in my own research and experience.

hahah i almost bought a pair of ON3P's and still may in the future but ive got too many skis as of now...

but yeah thanks again for all your info and inserts would be a good idea...
