Hey all, I'm new here, and looking to buy a new pair of skis. Some skis I'm looking into are something similar to the Volkl Ledges, or Armada El Reys.
I ski mostly on the East coast, doing lots of groomers at good speeds, but I'd like to start shaking it up a bit in the park/jibbing around. My first question is in regards to ski length. I'm around 5'8-5'9, 165lbs. I initially thought a shorter ski (160-165) would be an ideal length for more park type activity, and make me feel much more agile. But I've seen lots of people on here recommending skis in the 170 and up range for a park ski. (I'm usually on a 170ish shaped rental ski, recently rode some 166 volkl rtm-84s too.)
I would think that 170 would be a bit long for spins/feeling agile enough for just jibbing off whatever around. I realize they say longer skis are better for landing huge jumps, but I don't plan on launching off any monsters anytime soon. (granted, that may be subject to change once I get comfortable...) Knowing this, should I opt for a 164 or 171 length ski?
Then, as far as binding mounts go, I've never been on a center mounted ski, I would think that it would probably help me make snappier turns/feel more nimble, but at the same time give me too much grief at high speeds. Knowing this, I'm tempted to just go with a traditional all-mountain mount, but I'd be interested to know if anyone is riding somewhere in between, and how it feels for them.
TLDR: I'm looking for a ski/ski length/binding position that will let me ski some steep groomers at speed, while letting me feel agile and confident jibbing around and in the park. Typical one ski quiver kinda question I guess.
bonus question: Whats good (in terms of ski geometry/setup) for riding bumps. This is something I haven't given much though/energy doing, but I'm just curious what type of setups are good for what.
