i have been sing this for the past few days as a demo (as of now) and i had a few questions...

- pressing 'space' to play my clip that i want to edit is extreeeemely chopping, like freezing every other frame for a few seconds and i notice it is "not realtime" and @ 19 - 28ish fps / 58ish fps (i think i shot 60fps on my 7D at the time...) is this normal part of it streaming/rendering in AE or is this due to the speed of my comp..

- as i am just starting to get a hold of the program, and obviously do not know its full potential i am still learning, i was wondering if anyone knew of some sites for some good tuts on basic beginner editing and something i can get started on and go out to take more footage and have a decent edit with (so far i've checked: copilot, conoa, and some youtube vids)

thanks

Yeah the choppy playback can be due to a comp that is too slow, but no matter how good your computer is, it won't be able to playback complex animated stuff and things like that at realtime. The only way to do that is to do a ram preview, in the window where you choose play, pause, etc. you have something ressembling a "play" button but a little different, it's on the far right. Hit this one and the video is gonna load frame by frame, then playback in realtime

as for tutorials the only one I know of is copilot, and you said you already used it

i currently have the previous macbook pro, 2GB ram and 2.5GHz cpu...

i just tried doing the "wiggler" camera shake tut from copilot and not even that is working properly, and i swear im doing exactly what that fool is saying, even though he is doing it on windows 95 haha..and when i press play or whatever, its still pretty slow as fuck

The slowness in watching the video, is because it has to render it first, when the bar tis solid green itll play normally

yeah i figured that, but i let it go all the way and then it started to repeat from te beginning and the trail behind the cursor turned grey again...

Even on fast machines AE is going to be choppy until you do a render. Although AE is tedious enough that you don't really need it to play back in realtime anyway...

yeah 2gb isn't enough, you need more ram because when you preview, it stores the info in your ram and once that's done, it plays fluently, but this is limited by the amount of ram you have, and 2gb is not enough. But like slandypoo said, you don't really need to do much realtime previewing in AE since it's more of a frame by frame thing. The only time I do a RAM preview is when I'm done on a major part of what I'm doing and I want to see the outcome.

Yeah as people are saying it is most likely your lack of ram that is the issue. But make sure you are actually doing a ram preview and not just hitting space bar which does not actually trigger a ram preview. The second poster explained where you can click to activate this but you can also start a ram preview by hitting 0 on the number pad. This is basically my space bar in AE. Also try setting your comp to half, third or quarter res. You should be able to play something back in quarter res even with that little ram. This can be found below the composition window.
