ADHD - Conerta

clinically diagnosed with adhd and it's my first day on it, in school.

Basically made this thread to see other's that take meds for add/adhd and how it effects them, and their stories of taking meds. I personally feel, just normal i guess, not hyper-active at all and I can finally focus and it feels great.

Don't take meds. Turns you into a normal kid with no personality. Learn to control ADHD and use it to your advantage. Those meds kill kids hopes and dreams of being awesome.

Ok honestly this is all I hear and is mostly true for the kids who never had hopes anyways, their parents just want them to stop bouncing off the walls. For myself, however, I've wanted to go to a great Comp Sci school for a while and never could focus in classes so I slid by with 75s-80s. I can focus 95% instead of 45%, and am doing work instead of playing shredsauce. I feel different, I guess you could say like a zombie, but it's basically how normal people feel, and I'm just not used to it.

Side-effects are basically slim to none, just a headache 2nd period.

I'm still in 10th grade, and just want to use until college most likely, then I will need to learn, but I've tried everything else the past year and a half and nothing has worked.

Who else takes meds for their clinical illnesses?

whatever, you always need to be a smart ass. I'm in Computer Programming class with a 100 avg, everything is finished and I'm taking a break from extra credit

If I learned anything from HS to college its that the study habits you create in HS are the ones that you follow in college. So if you are relying on the drug in HS and thing that when you get to college you will just be able to study without it you're wrong.

I struggle with it still when it is something I'm disinterested in. Shit I'm on question 24 of a 110 question practice test for a just can't sit down and do it.

What I've found helps me is setting small goals. If you're reading a 50 page chapter, just try to read 10 pages at a take and take small 5-10 min breaks in between. If you have trouble on an assignment that requires you to be on the internet go into full screen so you don't see the other tabs you've opened or a bookmark bar.

I also found that Music helped me focus a lot. I realized that I sometimes can't focus on just 1 thing at a time. So I decided to control the second thing I'm focusing on, music. My mind was able to focus on what I was studying and the music at the same time. But since the music isn't distracting, I was able to have it just as background really.

I'm sure none of that made sense to anyone.

I understand what you're saying but it's just so hard and when I try so much I feel like I need to try this. I used to only listen to audio books, but now I can't listen to people read, I want to read it myself. Yes this is only my observation from today, but still, it's a difference. I only am taking it 5 days a week during school only, not summer, and maybe not even on Fridays

Claims earned 80% of total points in class before drugs. First day on drugs and now avergaes 100%.

Gimme some of them super drugs

Whatever works for you man. I just remember when I was a kid and took any kind of ADD/ADHD drug I was just going through the motions. My parents took me off of it before HS. I struggled at first but eventually you learn to cope with it and how you can do things to make it work. Sometimes its a good teacher to motivate you, but really you just gotta figure out what is causing you to get distracted and then try to control the distractions.

the meds work for a short period then the best thing is to get off of them cause you know how you are supposed to get work done.

I personally think they should be more used as an aid rather than a permanent solution. I have actually taken concerta for a while because I have ADD it worked for a while then the pills just started to make me sick and I felt like I wasn't myself taking them. After I stopped taking concerta(Which you can't just stop they have to wean you off) I felt better again but I could also control my ADD more because I have had the experience in being focused. I then learned how to be "normal" when I needed to be and could still be myself.

I work with a ton of kids with ADD/ADHD and lots with FASD (fetal alcohol spectrum disorder). Additionally, my foster sister has a combo of both. I'm not one to go a around prescribing meds to every kid who doesn't pay attention, but it can make a big difference.

I think there are a lot of people who think Ritalin, Concetta, other meds are miracle drugs and that simply isn't true. For SOME kids the ability to self regulate, pay attention, focus, have self control, sit still, etc. is impossible without a healthy combination of medication and support from parents/teachers/other supports. One will not be successful without the other.

I've seen the difference it has made in the lives of some kids, my sister included and it is a night and day change.

Who else takes meds for their clinical illnesses?

i have ADHD and took concerta for 13 years. things i found about it:

1. it undoubtedly does help you focus. i always did better studying/taking exams on it throughout high school

2. the longer you take it the less effective it is. over time i felt like the effects wore off more quickly and overall it was less effective

3. it destroyed my appetite. if you take it on a consistent basis you will be hungry less often. it took a couple of years being off of it before my appetite returned to semi normal and even now i dont get hungry as often as a normal 22 year old would

4. if i took more than a couple doses a day (if i had a test during the school day and then had to write a paper that night for example) id get splitting headaches. i also used to get migraines as a kid so this may just be me

overall what id say is that while concerta was helpful in terms of my academics, the negatives were pretty damn fucking annoying and awful. id say take it ONLY when you really need it and definitely dont take it everyday just because the doctor says to. the reality is there are other ways of coping with ADHD other than taking pills that can be just as effective. for me one thing that really helped me was just having something to fidget with when i am taking an exam or studying. id have silly putty or a piece of silk cloth or something else and i would just use it to keep my hands occupied while i read.

the other thing that is SUPER DUPER key for doing better academically with ADHD is planning. especially with essays really especially on test essays where you havent had time to prep. take the time to prep something. having a checklist of what you need to get done makes getting it done faster a lot easier.

i definitely found this to be the case as well. except that i had to listen to classical music or electronic music with lots of slow builds and crescendos and not a whole lot of lyrics

and yeah i just triple posted. im not sorry. id do it again.

Boof them.

I was put on some but didn't take them for that long. I still did fine. Also they weren't the answer to all my problems anyway.

Im good on pharmies.

Yea, I really got into explosions in the sky and other bands that are just instrumental.

Any difference you feel right now with concerta immediately once you start taking it are mainly placebo effects. To reach a theraputic concentration in the blood stream that is easily managed it takes about two weeks of consistent use of concerta. I've been on adderall, and vyvanse. I have a higher dose, I really dont feel much different when I take it. I don't get zoned, I don't get SUPER motivated or anything, I'm just actually able to be semi-productive.

If you get the zoned-out, tunnel vision, super study attitude when you take adderall, chances are you don't actually need it.

lol you wont stop using it in college. people that dont even have add abuse the shit out of it to get work done. finals week here and the stuff is selling like candy

i was put on an adult strength dosage of addys in third grade, which i think was a huge mistake at the time. in hindsight, i think my parents not having much knowledge about the disorder, and no knowledge of medications with the pressure of my current teacher and her wanting my parents to put me on it had a huge influence on my parents. they backed the dosage down of course, but i was still taking addys well into my middle school/junior high years. I was getting older and i was starting to realize that adderall was fucking with my personality and was making me a robot, so i stopped taking it.

flash forward to my high school years, they changed the medication from addys to concerta, and i like it better. i feel more human on it, but i also have taught myself to focus naturally by taking breaks from taking the pills. i just refilled my script last week for the first time in almost half a year so i can have a little help for end of the year finals and shit. taking breaks and naturally channeling your focus is what you should try to do, imo. i only take it on my full schedule days which is usually two to three days a week. on the other days, im utilizing my brain juices.

if you take it everyday, thats fine. just remember that you can focus with out it, and you should definitely try every now and then.

A lot of people will throw out their opinion and have no validity in there statement. I've been taking meds since 6th grade for my ADD (back when it was called ADD) and I am one of those people who needed it, or I could not get work done. It changed my life for the better and helped me become successful. Now back to the thread I took Conerta first, I had to take it with milk or I would get really bad stomach pains. I doped it and now have a mix of Adderall and Ritalin, It works a lot better for me. Don't be afraid to talk to your doctor and ask for a higher dosage if its not working, or to switch and explore other options.

Zzz I think is in pre med, or med. like all the people that just have heard it makes you into a zombie or some shit, and have no clue what they're talking about, my doctor just prescribed this so I wouldn't have to go to the nurse half way through the day.

Only side effect I really had was that hyperhydrosis where you just sweat uncontrollably, I did for like 10 mins at the end of the day

I had originally thought of selling it but not anymore. The thing is about this is it lasts 7-8 hours, still could be used for finals, but you'll be high for longer

Just dont take them as prescribed, abuse the shit out of them cause its more fun. Take breaks because you WILL create a dependence. Within 2 weeks of daily use your tolerance will increase substantially and if you go a day without any, youll want to lay in bed all day

I'm prescribed the same thing as you. Concerta, Methylphenidate, Ritalin.. they all are the same thing. My thoughts on it are it's cool if you have some stuff to get done, but overall, if you're taking it everyday, it really sucks.

It makes you sweat more, you lose your appetite, you aren't as creative, you pretty much feel like a shell of a human whose only purpose is to do mindless tasks -in a nutshell, it's legal, time released cocaine. Honestly, I can't believe they are able to prescribe it the way they do either. I have access to almost any kind of ADHD medication and dosage that I want, as it's completely trial and error prescribed medication. So pretty much, I walk into a med checkup, and the doc will ask, "Is this one good? Do you want more or less than you received? Ok, lets see how this works"... and then I get it.

It's set up to be abused (and to make money), and that's what is going on. In my opinion, it's not healthy to load up on it everyday, even though that's what the bottle says to do. It sucks to see that there aren't any alternative options to those who have severe cases of ADHD, I feel like different learning settings aren't put to trial as they should be. Instead, after 'failing' the test, you just get meds.

My advice to anyone who has severe ADHD, and cannot even sit down to do the simplest hw assignments after a day of concentrating would be to get on a schedule. Eat a healthy breakfast and lunch before and during school/work/whatever, and make sure you are working out regularly. Burning off energy and knowing what you need to accomplish each day is a must if you do not wish to take the meds everyday.

It's a whole nother story as to where the drugs go after they are prescribed. Concerta is one of the most abused over-the-counter drugs in the U.S., and it's mostly by students.

So fucking true.

-Random sweating from the palms is a big one for me, sometimes even feet. (and armpits)

-Makes me not feel the need to eat all day (and when you try its far from enjoyable)

-Shrivels up your dick/can make it difficult to get hard

-Toes/Fingers going numb or getting cold (due to the effect on blood flow)

-Very easy to get completely sidetracked for hours (what is happening right fuckin now)

-Can make you super dehydrated if you dont keep on drinking water

-Can effect sleep if timed poorly

-Need more and more to feel the "productive buzz" which eventually will completely disappear and may never return (some say this is just getting adjusted to the medication; to me that was the most beneficial and effective part of addy)

-If Im on it for an extended period I get an EXTREMELY bothersome to painful soreness/pain in the back of my neck (potentially from dehydration)

-If you smoke weed you can definitely create a co-dependance between the two substances, try to keep the two separate (seriously. sounds stupid I know)

I would dont take the medication daily. It will change you. Or if you do, dont take the massive load that the doc wants you on.

Experiment and find the right amount that keeps you awake/alert/attentive with some self control. Dont expect it to do all the work for you.

(fun little pro tip, if you have a hard time waking up in the morning, set an alarm 1hr-45 minutes before your actual wake up time and take your medication. You'll wake up ready to fucking roll. But make sure to eat! [Issue with this is if you do this every morning, it will be hell trying to get up without it])

disclaimer- Im not diagnosed with add or adhd. My doc was a bro and hooked it up because I was honest with him and told him I had tried it a few times before. I told him I found it a very effective way to focus on my extensive engineering course load since I had never needed to put effort into school previously

(he coincidently went to the same uni for medical school so he understood the difficulty)

You realize everyone's body is different, and this is not the case for me. I don't really sweet, I do have to force myself to eat, and I am not a zombie after taking it.

recently got put on (Adderall XR and regular Adderall), and while it was rough for a few days, it has been great since. I have been trying to stay on the minimum dose, and I think that helps.

Positives:

Increased focus. I can keep up with notes in class, not fall asleep etc., and this has made my classes more interesting to me(rather than just show up, do hw, cram for test). More energy in general, I have been keeping my room/desk much more organized. Overall it just helps me keep up with everything in my life, I don't really put things on the back burner as much, which has bee great for me.

Negatives:

First few days, splitting headaches (water/aleve did nothing). These went away after roughly a week. Initially I was a little bit more irritable/I would get annoyed easily, especially with people being loud/talking when I am studying. I bring headphone so if it bothers me I can tune them out (and music helps). Had a little trouble sleeping at first, drinking/smoking can help, especially if you have had lots of coffee or something late, but I've been on it long enough now that I know how it will affect me and I tend to plan my doses accordingly. Last thing is appetite. Mine took a big dive at first. It still is lower than normal. I just try to eat breakfast now, before the XR's kick in (usually an hour for me). I used to not really eat breakfast, so this helps. Also, if I don't finish my lunch (say I have 1/2 a sandwich left) I will save it for mid/late afternoon when the XR's wear off. I also always have dinner before I take the regular Adderall at night. For me, going to the gym always makes me really hungry, and now i have more free time so I go to the gym more. One last thing that can help is drinking powered/gatorade/vitamin water (or even a soda). Aside from alcohol, I usually only drank milk/water/coffee (or occasionally red bull). Drinking sugary drinks can help get your calories up and give you a little more energy, plus I usually get thirsty/dry mouth from it (another negative I guess), so this helped for the first month or so and I will still do it as needed.

Just realized how long the negatives section looks, but a lot is on dealing with them. Hope this helps.

I didnt read this thread but this guy i work with said adhd is a myth and the guy who discovered it confessed that he made it up.

He's a dumb redneck tho so dont take his word for it. If you think the meds help take them, if you dont, dont.

To add to mine, I never really have the zombie feeling people talk about. Another I have seen is lack of creativity, but I don't notice that. I just feel that it is something that allows me to work/operate at full efficiency. With that said, I don't take it when I don't have work, and I don't feel like I am held back in the rest of my life. For me it has been great, but everyone is different. The best thing you can do is be honest to your doctor, then together you can find a system (RX, lifestyle, diet, etc.) that meets your needs.
