Adding grabs to spins

Got my 3s and switch 3s down pretty nice, bringing the knees up, controlled and even spin, basically picture Henriks yknow? (Obv not)

Everything changes when I go for a grab. I'm trying to wait until 180 to grab so I get a good pop and commit to the rotation, but I still have a tendency to pause my spin when I grab.

Part of me thinks it's because the jump is too small so I don't have time to do a slow enough rotation to lock the grab, but also could just be my technique causing problems. I'm hitting the medium ones at Brighton but will be working on brining my 3s to the large jumps here soon.

What helped you in this situation or what do you think of when grabbing during spins?

If you're bringing your knees up (like you said) but freezing when adding a grab, try doing a pseudo grab, by bringing one hand to your boot buckles once you bring your knees up. Don't worry about grabbing anything, just get used to bringing your hand down after you bring your knees up. If that goes well after a few reps, try reaching a bit further and doing a light-touch safety grab. Then progress from there. It sounds like you have the all the pieces of the spin needed for a grab and just need to bridge a mental gap.

I can fucking 900 and I can only grab on 540s its a mental thing for me so just focus on getting over that mental hurdle.

are you looking down at your grab instead of what you'd otherwise do with your head/eyes?

That very well could be it, sounds like I need to let muscle memory guide the grab and continue looking through the spin intentionally

Are yall usually "blindly" grabbing while looking through the spin then vs seeing where to reach for the grab?

Yeah it's all about no look touch, start with the easy ones, like safety n japan and go from there. For me leading-hand grabs are easier than "regular" ones, so maybe try that as well.

It's all about the set. You should be hitting the jump and popping so that you're just chillin in the air and can go for the grab. Don't think about reaching down for grabs, you want to bring your feet up to your hand. If you can't, it's because your set was off in some way. That's not always true as you get into bigger tricks, but in this case it's true

It's all

about looking down at your grab. The head starts and finishes the rotation and is super important for spinning but if you are new to a grab then it's only natural to look down at your skis and make sure your find your grab. This is going to pause your rotation. I would find a bigger jump if possible and just start trying to grab a lot of whatever is the most natural grab for you to get without looking. And don't start the grab process at 180 on a small jump. As you pop you should be bringing your knees up and hands down to initiate your grab on a small jump that way when you get 180 you're already in the correct position and just have to grab. You won't be staring at your skis as long and you can start looking for that landing sooner. Good luck my G

Definitely do not be staring at the skis. Also Brighton jump 2 is plenty big enough to rip a 3 with a grab. I also appreciate you pointing out head movement, should definitely be looking for the spot

Meant to add, just practice grabs in straight airs until it's second nature and you don't have to feel for the skis. I spent like 3 seasons only doing grabs and 180s before I even learned 3s or had twintips. Because I had such a good feel of where several different grabs were I was able to do grabs in 360s within the first few I ever did.

What's your recommendation for jump size. Personally I would say anywhere from 20ft-45ft is money zone for 360 and 540s with grabs depending on the poppyness. The poppyier the jump the smaller it has to be in my opinion. If you find your self trying to learn like a 3 mute on a real flat jump 25ft jump it going to be a lot harder then on a 15 feet pretty poppy lip jump imo

Try blunt, that grab is insanely easy and comes super naturally. Idk the difference between leading and trailing but if you spin right and reach with your right hand it will literally just fall into place

I don't think there's a number persay. I would just ask a local dude at wherever you ski who knows what he's doing as far as which jump might be best. Brighton My oh My 2 and 3 are plenty fine. All 3 Woodward park city jumps in a row are also plenty fine as well. I think more than anything, you just need to get more reps in and try different things. Don't overthink jump sizes and lips, just get your reps in :)
