ACL Injury Update: I Finally Skied Again!

Hey all, just wanted to post an update on the ACL/meniscus journey. I blew up my knee in February and have been grinding it out in the gym ever since. A few days ago I finally retuned to snow and got some ultra mellow park laps in. I definitely don't have the confidence I did pre-injury, but I feel pretty good about working my way back to where I was. There's still a bit of pain and stiffness, and crashing the wrong way definitely sucks, but we back on snow and it feels damn good.

To anyone that's gone through it, how long did it take to no longer notice the bad knee? Does crashing certain ways still hurt? To anyone else that is currently injured/going through PT, feel free to ask questions!

I’ve skied through knee injuries but never blown it up.

Keep grinding and getting the strength back. Huge props for not quitting after an injury like that.

Following. Finally getting my reconstruction Wednesday, put it off when I blew it up in Feb, thanks to my work. Missing a whole season blows!

nice to hear!

Im getting MRI/CT on monday! :| how long before pain left and you could walk from injuriy? park crash?

Took me about 2 months to have no pain, I got fit for a brace before my surgery initially got canceled (thanks governor) and the brace helped a lot with getting weight back on the leg without pain.

First off Congrats!! I tore my knee(acl, lateral amd medial meniscus) in January 2014. I dont know about you but its more of a mental thing than physical when returning. Its "easy" to bust your ass at pt and in the gym after surgery. It took me a good 2 seasons to start feeling like myself again. It was also an on and off again thing in those 2 seasons. Some days I was confident but majority of the time I wasnt and to me it showed in edits. But don't force being comfortable, it will have. Get familiar with the tricks you know and work it slow.

But keep your knees and legs strong and stretch a lot. Doing those things are game changers and will help you to keep doing what you love.

Best of luck!!

Hell yeah thanks man! Did you have a lot of pain in those first two seasons? I notice landing certain ways can really suck so far so I've mostly been landing everything switch.

I had discomfort with my medial miniscus(in side of my knee) But in my situated it was a lower percent it would heal. It eventually tore completely 2 yrs later and had to have removed cause it was beyond repairable. But there will be aches and pains the first season back for sure.

I tore my ACL in May 2019. I started skiing again in February 2020, but only skied 11 days and had just started doing 3's on rollers and a few small rail tricks when COVID shut everything down. I feel a lot more confident now than I did then - I'm still not at 100% and the surgeon told me it would take another season to get back to that, but I've hit medium jumps, spun both way cork 7s, and am starting to feel pretty confident on rails again. I have a little bit of pain, but mostly just discomfort with the brace and the knee not feeling really normal but not painful. Occasionally I'll feel a twinge on landing or gripping a rail, but nothing too bad.

started skiing 6 months out. skied groomers for the first 3-4 weeks then gradually went into the park and now i am progressing my skiing at a pretty steady pace. confidence was 100% a problem but i have gained a lot of confidence after throwing some flips and learning new rail tricks.

Gotchya, I'm having discomfort in my lateral meniscus area. Gonna play it by ear and see how it feels for the rest of the season.

Also can't forget to shoutout my PT [tag=147716]@SkierPT[/tag] for getting me back on snow!

A couple weeks after my injury I was walking again with minimal pain. After surgery though it was over a month, and even then walking was pretty painful. Got better fast though with a lot of dedication to rehabbing!

I had reconstruction in June and just got cleared to ski again. I feel like I'm going to be pretty afraid to hit larger features in the park or try more technical tricks, especially on larger jumps

lol same just got cleared to ski but still have not been, its def gonna be a mental battle for sure.

Have any of you switched to using pivot bindings? I'm wondering if this kind of binding would be better to prevent reinjury, i.e. look pivots versus tyrolia attacks

Update: gave the meniscus pain about a week of icing + rest to help it die down a bit, and yesterday had my best day in the park by far. Minimal pain and beginning to get actual tricks back. Will continue to post hear as I progress!
