Abasin parts ways with Vail Resorts

This could go either way for abasin, like is someone just gonna buy an abasin pass? idk much about abasin in general, but won't they just lose their local ski base?

Also wouldn't be surprised if we see this kinda stuff happening with more resorts in the future, I already heard alta wants to bail from the Ikon pass already...

I could see them partnering with loveland on some sort of pass because they have a close relationship with eachother.

An a-bay and loveland deal would make for awesome spring break trips.

Both are within closer proximity to Denver as well when compared to the resorts deeper into the range. Both mountains are a great time.... they could for sure sell people in Denver on less travel time to get to the slopes, less crowds on hill, and the combo pass would probably be cheaper than the Epic. I think that offering could do very well with Colorado locals in the area.

They would basically be selling the fact that they aren’t Breck to locals who have been skiing in CO for decades. Out of the CO locals that I’ve met - like born and raised there, skiing for decades - they all hate Breck and prefer A-Bay.

Abay has been absolutely fucking mobbed this season on weekends, so glad they’re doing this. I would 100% buy an Abay pass if I were staying in CO next year.

There are an ass ton of people in Denver that want to ski 10 days a year, but aren’t into driving alllll the way up to Breck to wait in line all day. A-Bay would do really well if they focused on these folks

Abay needs to partner with Loveland and cater strictly to crusty locals. Maybe just stop grooming lol

Nah ripping groomers can be a blast since there are no yellow jackets. They need to just stop adding express chairlifts.

As much as I love A-Basin for the terrain, vibe, kick ass Patrol, and they’re our neighbors, I really hope loveland and A-Basin don’t form a partnership.

Maybe a deal where you buy a pass for either area and get 5 days free at the other or something would be cool but I’ll be so bummed if they combined. Loveland can barely park everyone now as it is.

Unless we build a gondola between us and become the best area of all time (hyperbole, please don’t hit me with “dude....CB, Teluride, Silverton, Highlands blahblah) then I’m into it.

Joining powder alliance would be dope.

It's 73% black or double black, It's not a resort for people that ski 10 days a year and that's the point. There's literally like 3 greens.

Only skied at A-bay once in late may but it was so sick, I can't imagine you can see anything when it snows but the spring shredding was unreal

James Coleman bought Purgatory and the back country stuff in the San Juan mountains plus Hesperus not too long ago. Maybe he’s interested? Do CO locals go to Purg? Asking cause I know it’s pretty south...

God I hope so. Idk if it's the ikon pass or what but the traffic in little cottonwood has been twice as bad as years past. It used to be that if I drove up before the road closure at 5am I'd be the only car in the canyon, now there's literally traffic at 5am on a powder day. Even days after a powder day, you get in line at 730 and you're lucky to stay in in second gear the whole way up. If the ikon pass is the cause, then it can go to hell

Yeah some old dude at alta said there are alot of people skiing alta with the ikon pass, solitude is definitely more crowded, this is the downside to multi-resort passes...

Does snowbird want to as well? Just losing the resorts off the ikon Pass would do wonders for traffic in lcc

I mean some old dude on the lift was telling me some random stats that IDK if we're true, no idea about snowbird.

Would be interesting to know how much the resorts are receiving from ikon.

Based on the massive increase in traffic in the canyons I think it's pretty worth it for them, just fucks over all the locals

IDK if i'd call the increase "massive" traffic in LCC and BCC has always been a thing. Even 10 years ago if the canyon is closed you sit in a huge line of cars and then creep up to the mnt and you lucky if you're skiing by 10am. There is an increase in skiers though, SLC's population has doubled in the last 10 years, definitely some new skiers in there, like you ;)

The bigger issue I see is parking, BBC especially has some huge problems, the lots are just too small. But, what is the solution? Mammoth has a similar issue, very small lots and everyone just lines the road with cars, seems like the future of BCC at least. I definitely noticed an increase in traffic/parking in BCC this year, Ikon pass as solitude is definitely causing some of that, but the brighton millennial pass did the same thing last year.

But, it's hard to complain this year, of course people wanna go skiing in Utah it has snowed 400" so far. Will be interesting to see how the ikon pass plays out next year, these resorts with 5-7 days of skiing might just say fuck it.

I've been out here 3 years now, year 1 did not have this much traffic, and the lines at snowbird this year have been unheard of. Yes there are more new skiers but a lot of people I talk to on the lift came here via ikon

Mtns should have lots where you can get your stuff on and ski down to a t bar or something that takes you to the resort. I'm guessing that resorts would worry about skiers trying to lap through the lot or something for free, so maybe they would still check passes getting on the lift, requiring day ticket holders to walk or valet, but parking lot lifts imo are the best way to get people from huge lots to the mountain. Would be much easier to do this at a resort that continues further down hill from the mountain, but having roads on one side, you could have all the lots funnel into one trail that takes you to the main resort. Winterpark also has that open gondola thing that runs from one of the lots to the base. The issue is that resorts would rather just make more valet space because it's cheaper for them short term, and creates a bigger "need" for valet parking.

The states in general are pretty far behind as far as transportation accommodation goes. Not only that, but the mega resorts of europe (Val Thorens, Val d'Isere, Tignes, etc) have just so many people that they don't really have the option to just be like "lol just walk" because they have such high skier occupancy, that it is worth the ticket sales.

This brings up the other issue that even if a resort can fit every person that wants to ski, customers aren't gonna be happy if even the mid mountain lifts have a 1 hour lift line wait. It seems that on the individual season pass and ski ticket system, it is a lot easier to predict crowds through lodging and online ticket sales, so it makes sense that many of these resorts opting to join these multi resort passes are unprepared to handle the increased traffic.

So basically ever resort should do what Breck does for their lots

Breck expands season to Memorial Day. I bet it’s to appeal to the late spring crowd that they are scared to lose to the basin.

There was a Saturday this year where the line was on the peruvian cattrack. I'd never seen anything like that. Tram was running that day too

An abasin/loveland pass would fucking kill in Denver. It would probably be the only pass I'd get next year. I don't think they'll go for it thought because loveland all ready has its own problems with parking and adding abasin will just make it worse. Joining the Ikon wouldn't solve abasin's parking problems, and might make them worse, but it would be an awesome F you to vail resorts. I bet they try going solo for a season and then reevaluate next year.

This my 10th season in Utah and the traffic is noticably worse. Yes there have always been road closures that cause traffic jams, but this year there is a line before they even close the road. That and red snakes on non powder days are definitely new. You're not being real if you say it's the same as always. I drive that road every day and have been for a long time, and it's much worse this year.

It's worth it for how amazing of a season it's been though haha

This is at snowbird. Eheath says there have always been lines at LCC but this year has been noticeably worse than the other 2 I've been here for.

To be clear, I'm not disagreeing with you guys that it is very crowded this year, traffic and parking, I'm just pointing out that in the past, both of these things have been an issue. Ikon pass, brighton millennial pass mixed with tons of snow and more skiers than ever, it's definitely going to be a record breaking year for skier days in utah.

As a CB local the Epic pass has almost ruined weekend skiing here. Parking is full before the lifts open and lift lines are almost not worth it. Same is true on any pow day.

Ive been lurking in this thread and reading some of the utah locals posts and I gotta agree with you and some others on this congestion topic. I moved here in '07 with my family and even then, I remember locals this being a huge talking topic. I finally started skiing LCC more full-time in 2014 and remember being backed up in traffic then, too, so crowds have always been an issue like you said.

And yeah especially with the population growths. Even places like where I am at in the Heber valley are seeing rates top 80-90% annually in growth due to the tech industry booms and stuff in the Utah Valley and know for sure SLC is one of the hottest places to live in the entire country.

Theres really not a whole lot we can do when theres a million or two people who live in a valley thats less than an hour away from the mountains.

I was saying that I've been here to see the place change. That's all. I've got a couch if you need it. All love.
