The skis I listed are directional, all mountain twin tippers, around 85mm at the waist = 70% hard snow, 30% soft. So, they will not deliver excellent float in the soft stuff, but at the price you gave it's gonna be hard to find a ski over 90mm (more 50 hard/50 soft). The closest that I know of are the Line Prophet Flite at $449 and Rossi S3 at $549.

but, mid 80's is plenty wide to ski pow on.

It will work for sure and he'll have a blast because it's skiing and skiing is awesome, but if you asked me what the ideal waist width for an all mountain pow ski would be, it wouldn't be 85mm.
