A question on etiquette and political correctness (so to speak)

So, the head sensei of my kendo dojo, his mother recently passed away (last Monday) rather suddenly it seems. Next Sunday there is a memorial service but they are also going to still have practice (both start at 3pm).

We as a dojo were told that we could go to the memorial service if we wanted but practice is also going on.

So, I am now debating what would be considered "proper" so to speak. On the one hand, a lot of the sensei and stuff will be at the memorial service so having one higher ranking person like me would be appreciated. But at the same time, this sensei has kinda been that one guy that acted like a sports coach for me that was willing to force me to do better not only at kendo but also get on my case about school and other stuff as well so I feel like me going to the memorial service after he supported me for all these years wouldn't be a bad idea either.

So, any words of wisdom there or am I gonna get a bunch of cat pictures out of this?

Go to the memorial. If you or he are that concerned about your practice then you can just stop in and pay your respects and politely tell him you're still going to attend practice and dip early.

Go to the memorial service. It seems like a nice thing to do for the guy. After all, you said he's supported you before so you should probably do the same thing for him.

jeez panada where ya been

i agree with the other posts, go. these situations dont arise often and its important to support eachother when they do. as paskiing said, if it is an important practice or you would really like to make it, no one would think less of you for leaving early but even making an appearance and showing your support/paying your respects will go a long way

Exactly what these guys all said ^ go to the service. Even if your visit is short, it will make that difference, and on the other hand nobody will mind if you leave for training.

School, and admittedly, I haven't skied in almost 2 years now due to my weight issue/injuries and also just getting interested in other activities that are year round things

i gotcha, well i hope things are going well. it was cool to see that you're still into the mma scene, thats some gnarly badass stuff

I'd say go to the service. on another note, that's cool that you're in to kendo. my father in law has a kendo/shinkendo dojo. he studied under Toshishiro Obata for a long time. don't see a lot of people in to kendo/shinkendo much these days.

It's the expense I think. The gear, all of it (the armor, swords, and the uniform) will come out to $1000 or so even if you just get cheap shit.

I'm not in this video but this is a vid that a local newsgroup did on our dojo:

@geodude:

"i gotcha, well i hope things are going well. it was cool to see that you're still into the mma scene, thats some gnarly badass stuff"

It keeps me busy, and doing something active.
