A note about ski movies

A good ski movie is not longer than 30 minutes.
Just because you have four angles of a trick/feature doesn't mean you need to cut back and forth using every possible permutation of the angles.
K thnx.

you must love FODT movies. last two havent broken the 30 minute barrier. i think a movie can be long and interesting. there are way more important factors than simply lenght. older MSP movies were super long and good. however revolver was super long and was awful.

It's funny that even though Arena was 30 or less, it still had countless angles and cuts on almost every single shot.

i think you need to be more specific about your argument. how exactly dose length dictate worth. i agree that many ski films are way to long because joe blow was convinced you needed to see that trick just one more time. however theres so much footage an editor has to deal with i am honestly not surprised they are not longer.

I skip at least one segment in all those movies whenever i warch them..

Either because its too long or because I dont want to spend an hour watching the movie

More short movies would be better.

its true, but i could watch skiing all day every day (until it snows) so the more footage they give us the better.

segments are always the same length there are just more of them. there are so many kids out there killing it because the sport blows up more each year they gotta stuff more segments into each film.

I think it would be nice to have very short movies. But for the people who want to check out a lot of extra footage, just plop it all in bonus features!

disagree...part of what makes ski movies so great is that you can watch them over and over again. if you shortened them, you'd lose part of what made them so great for repeat viewings. and maybe it's true that the average movie is too long nowadays, but making an absolute statement like the one above is just silly.

I honestly can't watch a full ski movie. I just lose interest and start wondering when it will be done.

Levin I agree with the gist of what your saying but not the exact number. Ski films in general do need to be much shorter. 45 minutes should be the max, while 35 is a bit sweeter sweet spot.

I don't know man, my favorite video from last year was Cool Story and it's somewhere around an hour long. If you have enough unique footage to make a long movie, why the hell wouldn't you?

i don't think skipping a segment or two during repeat viewings is necessarily a problem with the movie. i have refresh on my computer, and cannot tell you how many times i've watched wiley miller's segment in the back of class during a long econ lecture or in a moment of free time. with ski movies, it's unnecessary to watch the entire thing every time, isolating exactly what you want to see is part of what makes them so awesome to me. I'll be totally stoked the first time through a movie, and afterwords, the more content the better to sift through over and over again. but that could just be me.

i'd rather see something shorter where each shot was meticulously chosen in order to contribute to the feel of the entire movie, rather than a mixture of great, good, and meh shots to create an eighty minute ski spectacular.

The Way I See It didn't need to rehash over the Alyeska jump shoot, but they did, and they re-used several shots on the process. Likewise, I felt that PBP wasn't very choosy with their shots in Revolver. Take LJ's shots on the Bachelor jump for instance. The segment was bulked up by new angles of the same double. Also, by the time we get to LJ's doubles (which did look great) we've already seen a slew of doubles. LJ's tricks have become watered down by the length of the film and excess of doubles preceding his.

why do you care. just stick to watching edits and webisodes then. i personally like some length in my movies because i dont have ADD and like to watch skiing.

i never found it hurt anyone to watch more skiing

i think that a short movie doesnt mean it is good but a long movie pretty much is a death sentence. when in doubt its better to have quality over quantity.

i would rather have a ski movie thats 30 minutes then a shit ton of bonus short movies that just show all the fun and funny stuff

I just watched Like a Lion... and it was awesome. I don't care how long it is as long as it stays interesting. Movies like Revolver should definitely be cut to 30 minutes.

I'd guess 65% of the shots in an average ski movie don't need to be there. If people take a good hard look at each shot and ask themselves, what does this shot really bring to the table, How is this shot unique, and how does it make the movie better, things start getting interesting.
Sure, athletes feelings get hurt if they end up on the cutting room floor and sponsors get pissed off when their riders are left out and they're footing the bill for the movie... but come on guys... grow a pair and do some manly shit next winter if you want a part in a video.
I think a movie is much more memorable, aka better as a whole, when I say "holy fucking shit" after EVERY SINGLE CLIP for a half hour straight, vs a movie that's mostly forgettable, with a few good shots or segments sprinkled about over the course of an hour or more. Producers should be striving to make a movie where viewers will begin to remember every shot in order, in every segment, from start to finish after watching the video a few times. When you've got a movie that does this to the audience, you've made the best ski movie ever. It would be a movie that people will talk about for years to come, because they know and remember every single detail about it from start to finish.

I was about to tell you what an idiotic statement that was, but I noticed you're holding a gun in your profile picture so I'll keep my mouth shut this time.
wait a second.... whoops. Damnit.

I, very respectfully, disagree with you sir. The 30 minute, ski porn, "holy fucking shit" film that you speak of has absolutely no depth. It's like fucking a stripper, yeah she blew you're mind, and you'll remember it for a while, but you're not making a deep connection with her. When you watch a ski FILM, there's not just your mind blowing shots/sections, but there are stories that come along with some of the segments that resonate with you. When you buy these films, at any time you can go to your favorite seg, get your rocks off, and go on with your day. Or you can sit down and watch the whole thing, getting your primal need for ski porn, as well as the comfort of cuddling with the parts that contain the depth that comes with the film.

Woah, kinda rambled there for a minute, but I'm gonna leave it alone.

Am I going to agree with you that some sections can use cutting? For sure man, some films just come out over saturated with the bullshit. But should they just be crammed full of "holy fuck" shots and nothing else? No way.

its all about quality, how well does what you're watching hold your interest. for example turbo is my favourite ski movie and I watch it constantly. but more than half the time I skip the Alaska segment. ski movie have too much filler, I don't need to see a cork 9 tail on a park jump, and I never want to see another fs 270 out of an urban rail.

The again there are examples like Skimatic, although not a bad movie (wish I hadn't lost the DVD somehow), it was roughly 25 minutes long including the credits. And there were no real bangers in the whole movie, and a couple of actually bad segments from the Phils: slo-mo shots of both guys trying to get that 540 into slight pow and failing miserably.

I think 30-40 minutes is the optimal length, but the important thing should be consistency in the editing and song choice. Nowadays it feels weird watching older movies where they go from Cypress Hill to hard screaming rock to Deltron 3030 in the span of two segments.
