A Guide to Boot Fitting

Hey NS,

My hunch is, a number of people could still learn a few things (and maybe a lot)about the boot fitting process. Boots are the most important component to your setup, so you should probably know your stuff (whether your in the market for your first pair of boots, or you tenth.

These articles were written by Charlie Bradley a senior boot fitter at The Boot Doctors in Taos, NM.

The 101 article discusses the myth of half sizes and issues of selecting the right shell length. The 201 article talks about boot sole length; why Mondo sizes have changed over the years; custom foot beds (the importance of identifying the right type - rigid or flexible); and an explanation of the stance balance alignment (or "canting") process. It's good stuff.

Enjoy, you might learn something.

very nice article. i just went into a shop yesterday to get fitted for new boots and found out ive been wearing boots that were 2 sizes to big and was told it was probably because the person i bought them from just wanted to make a quick sale and knew i didnt know what a properly fitted boot feels like. Which is true i was 15 when i bought the boots im in now and really had no idea. After I left i had some doubts because at first i could not believe ive been skiing in completely wrong sized boots or multiple seasons but after reading this and actually thinking logically i am definitely putting new boots at the top of my list of things to buy. now i just need to get my paycheck ;)why i felt the need to tell my boot story? i have no idea. carry on

i felt like i was treated the same way. i was 15 and very clueless. the guy "cut me a deal" with this ski package: 166 09-10 afterbangs with some rossi binding and rossi sas fs1's for $630. he told me the boots were freestyle boots, so they'll work great. my feet kill when i wear them, kinda pissed really.

Glad to hear you found this helpful.

Too many people make uninformed boot purchases. Some basic knowledge can ensure you get the right pair of boots that fit correctly, and might help you save some bucks in the process.

Thanks for reading!

My best recommendation is to buy a boot through a bootfitter like Surefoot. With the purchase (even after being fitted) they will fix any problems you have with the boot. Even if you buy a boot after being fitted once the boot packs out the fit changes and new pressure spots can arise, maybe part of the shell needs to be grinded down etc...

It's really the best way to go. Sure you might pay more but if you're using heel/toe guards when walking around on the cemet/black top the boots will last forever and be the comfiest thing you've ever decided to do with boots.
