A Basin purchased by Alterra

The consolidation continues and this one just makes me sad but probably should have seen it coming.

A Basin has been confused about their brand for awhile. It’s like they want to be a destination resort but they don’t even have a village.

Makes sense now that they were putting money in to attract a buyer.

Change of management more than once in the last 20 years means Abay was probably being ran like shit behind the scenes.

It seems their brand is selling the idea of a locals mountain to tourists. Taking away a lot of the flash of i70 resorts while still being very much an i70 resort.

Dang, they've made so many improvements the last few years. Been a proud passholder the past 5 years. Guess that has come to an end.

Is this the little resort right off of i70?

You might be thinking of Loveland, that's the one above the tunnel. Abasin is just off of Loveland pass, the little road you can take to bypass the tunnel that drops you out by Keystone.

Yep that’s what I was thinking of.

Not sure if much will change, but I just hope weekend parking reservations start next year. Loveland pass traffic has been a shitshow weekend mornings this season

Yea Alterra owns Deer Valley too and they have stayed pretty true to their original vibe.

And yep, parking needs improvement. At both resorts lol.

incoming deer valley rant:

alterra is adding like 16 lifts and a new base area to deer valley. i was doing an estimate in my head (very official) and i think they are investing at least $500 million into it. honestly, deer valley pisses me the fuck off. the exclusiveness of the rich, ski only, mid as fuck terrain. all of it. also, how hypocritical is it for a company to have an inclusion initiative and then invest that insane amount in the least inclusive resort there is lmao. more like a delusion initiative.

But wasn’t it not actually DV?

I thought it was development for Mayflower and the developer ran out of funding so they decided to roll up under DV.

Correct, it was supposed to be a separate resort

My point being is that deer valley was always like this. Alterra buying it didn't really change it, for better or worse.

Hopefully they keep the great things that make Abay what it is and don't flood it with iKon people from Denver.

The money injection to DV is so they can sell ski-in-out real estate. Also the culture was pretty easy to preserve at DV, as it's for rich tourists and doesn't actually have any solid ski culture.

Abasin on the other hand, I'm afraid for. Never been but seemed to be a place that had some culture, and Altera is not known for being a friend of terrain parks, shovel built jumps, or employee satisfaction.

Pretty much every major alterra mountain has a Woodward, they don't let you build jumps tho I'm p sure

what could they do that would make more ikon pass holders come than already do?

My guess is both of these things will happen, replace "Ikon people from Denver" with "Ikon people from Boston/NY" and that's pretty much what happened to Sugarbush when Alterra bought them a few years back.

Alterra seems to have a somewhat hands-off approach compared to the other mega-conglomerates (Vail, POWDR), but just being unlimited on a mega pass (especially being driving distance from a city) can change so much

Stay strong powdr Corp, I wouldn't be able to stand it if we were unlimited at bird on ikon.

Abasin seemed quite cool from what I saw. This saddens me.

*POWDR resorts but yea, they're Alterra's biggest partner on the whole Ikon pass thing

You guys do realize ABay has been owned by a massive corporation for like 20 years, right? I doubt much changes. Compared to VR, I think Alterra does a better job letting their properties stay true to themselves....

Alterra is better than Vail, but there is just a horde of ikoners nowadays who will look at the forecast and fly/drive into town to ski on pow days which really sucks for the people who live there when suddenly there's 40 minute lines anytime it snows more than 3 inches

Yeah, they haven’t been independent for decades. But, they at least were never owned by the corporations making skiing somehow more crowded while pricing most people out of it.

Currently, Ikon pass only gets 5 (or maybe 7?) days at Abasin. Alterra could give unlimited days to Ikon pass holders (just like WP, Steamboat, Solitude etc.). A lot of people go to WP/Copper to save their A-Basin days for the spring or when it snows; if they had unlimited, they might go all the time.

The way Alterra’s relationship is structured with their associated resorts (Alta/SB, Aspen, etc.), they are incentivized to get as many “skier-days” as possible at the resorts they own.

Is the closest town with hotels Frisco? I can’t picture out of state people flying just to go stay in Frisco for basin. I’d picture they still go to the bigger resorts if they’re on ikon assuming flying from out of state.

This might be a retarded prediction but I foresee Alterra forcing the resort/ski patrol to shut down the East Wall and Steep Gullies at some point in the coming years.

Either preemptively or following a bunch of retarded Jerry’s killing themselves trying to go down either.

I’m not saying this terrain is some all time challenging terrain, but the average skier at the basin is 10x better than what you see at Breck, Keystone, and Copper.

the strong hand of capitalism once again prevails!

Can they build lodging there? Do they not have any lodging simply because the longtime owners just held out on real estate development?

but really, how much is this going to affect us? It's still the same mountain. and the park can't get any worse!

I bet winter park and copper will get a little less traffic.

Gotcha, I just knew that every Colorado resort that's on ikon has a sick terrain park except for abay (which is fine because no one is going to abay to ride park lol)

There’s a lot of other dangerous terrain that has stayed open under Alterra management. The Cirque at WP, alpine terrain at Solitude, and most notably headwall/kt-22 at palisades.

I share your fear, but considering ski patrol was pressured to open kt-22 before the death earlier this year, I think Alterra is incentivized by the fact that at least a portion of its guests are loyal because of sick terrain.

POWDR isnt much better. Everyone forgets how badly the cummings family fucked-up their deal with PC and how VR swooped in.

Keystone is 5 minutes from A basin. Dillon and Silverthorne are both 15-20.

But yeah as your average ski tourists are more interested in amenities than terrain, a-basin is not super popular for out of state visitors.

Thats basically been the story of Taos the last couple years. You don't really ever see lift lines or any real type of crowds until Opensnow pins us for a storm, then its madness, especially if said storm went a lil too south to hit CO much

You pretty much have the same lift conversation every single ride on those days "Oh yea im from CO and saw the forecast and realized I had some days at Taos on my Ikon pass!"

That’s totally fair. I forgot those were Alterra owned. I guess I’m just jaded by how many idiots are on i70 resorts

there's an A Basin sticker that says "ABay is a body of water surrounded by water on 3 sides"

Nah. Altera has plenty more burly terrain at other resorts that they keep open. Palisades/Alpine have plenty of wayyyyy more gnarly terrain. Mammoth is up there too.

I’ve never skied jn Cali but I feel like there’s a higher concentration of tards who ski in summit

Also they are using funds for service members recreation to help fun the massive project

Lmfao. As someone who has lived in both states I’d say it’s pretty close.

But, given what goes on in Summit I understand why you’d say that

Anythings possible but that's a pretty wild and unlikely prediction. It's not even that ridiculous of terrain. It's sick but still. As other people mentioned there's some gnar terrain elsewhere.

Not trying to be a dick but are CO skiers really surprised that another large Denver-based ski mega corp bought another resort out? Mega corp consolidation was literally invented here lol

All we can hope for is a more ethical resurgence of the Indy resorts across the country imo. But unfortunately a lot of these places are running in the red this season due to low snowpack, low skier numbers, lodging numbers being down, weddings not being sold, etc.

Alterra will not limit days for ikon pass holders. Parking will become a much, much bigger issue than it already is. The vibe will get severely nerfed.

for those concerned, based on alterra's acquisition of sugarbush, this shouldn't be too bad. of course there will be larger crowds but i think that alterra is a little less involved than vail and lets mountains stay pretty independent and true to theirselves.
