A-Basin opening in september?

i've heard alot of rumors but have no proof to back them up. I hear they are already blowing snow and plan to open in september. If anyone knows for sure please let me know.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I am so unbelievably jealous that you guys in Colorado have such an incredible season.

I drove past ABay two days ago and they had not started blowing snow yet. It looks like they were getting ready to, though. But those rumors are prooobably false. Loveland is always the first to open and they don't even open until 2nd week of Oct. The nights have been decently cold but it's been too warm during the day.

They are supposed to finish their new lift by the end of September (they replaced the bottom lift). Definitely not making snow yet though. Still, they've got a good shot at opening around mid-october.

yeah its been really warm lately in colorado but loveland claims to be making snow at night four days from now. i kind of doubt it though given the forecast for here in Colorado Springs is in the mid 80's for at least the next 5 days

just to clarify, loveland is not the first to always open. besides last season (in which loveland only opened 1 day prior to abay), abasin has opened 1st for i think the last 3 seasons. Although it has been close every year, a friendly competition. They both usually open mid october. One season they opened oct. 8th, the next they opened oct. 14th. But with the new lift at Abay its hard to say, and usually they have already been attempting to blow snow since early-mid september, seeeing as how most of the other resorts (copper, breck, keystone) will start blowing their snow in about 10 days, usually about 1 month before they expect to open.

Either way I am super excited for whoever opens first, cannot wait! I am sure I will see you all there!

im still so stoked. even if they don't open in september both loveland and a-bay bay will be opened by mid october. and that is real soon. See all you newschoolers at both mountains in the not so distant future.

50 or not it will be cold enough at night to start making snow soon. both loveland and a bay will be opened early october. if you want to be negative about it then go for it, me on the other hand will keep it positive and hope for an early start.

I wouldn't classify the october/part of november section of the season as "incredible"

It's better than what we have over here on the East...trust me, any amount of snow in fucking september/october is "incredible"

The Ski Report Weather forecast for A-basin says that the night low for the next couple of nights is 40 degrees. That's not cold enough for snow to be made. I would classify this claim as highly unprobable.

My dad is a ski patroller at the Basin and these rumors are FALSE! The scheduled opening date is October 9th. But they might not finish the lift on time.

those of you who are posting about temps in the 80s at the front range obviously have not been paying attention to the weather in this state- it could be 80 in denver and 25 degrees at night in summit. 5 days ago in silverthorne it was 25 degrees and we have a had a frost delay the 7 days in a row at my golf course in silverthorne. Abay and Loveland will follow the typical patten of opening around early-mid october.

Haymaker Golf Course in Steamboat was getting frost delays during the middle of summer, but there wasn't even a chance of snowmaking at that time. Your argument in invalid.

Dear Front Range NS ~ it doesn't matter how warm it is where you are. Our weather is ridiculously different from yours. Snow making goes on at a certain temp... its colder at night and thats when the majority of it starts cause thats when our temps hit earliest in the season. this is not rocket science.

Frisco, CO. Low of 35 and High of 69 tomorrow

Fort Collins: Low of 51 and High of 86

Colorado Springs: Low 51 and High of 83

Dear Stupid NS-- 35 degrees isn't cold to start snowmaking because the freezing point of water is 32 degrees. durp dee durp

Ya... we had shitty guns back in Michigan and we started at 34 degrees. It definitely doesn't need to be 32. BUT we've had a bunch of nights around 29 already. We're so close :)

^^ im sorry let me clarify my argument. Out of the last 2 WEEKS at least - probably more- we have had frost delays everyday at my course. Yes, i understand you get them randomly and occasionally in the summer, however, they have been consistent the last 2 weeks which means that winter temps are 'around the corner' - not here yet but coming for sure.

bottom line abay and loveland opening will be close to the average opening date unless we get some crazy summit county weather patterns- which is always possible.

30 degree spreads? and we realize your temperatures are much different, but they are not 60 degrees lower than ours.... if it was in the mid to upper sixties this would all be believable but not when its nearing 90 here.

Well obviously. But the difference between how hot it got during the day is about 60 degrees different than our NIGHT temps. when snow making starts this early in the season... fine its upper 60s here during the day but like said... weve been getting really cooooool at night.

youre almost there man, but quit trying to act like you know everything. basically, you can make snow in 37 degree temps if you know what youre doing...

"Knowing what you're doing" has nothing to do with snowmaking. The average humidity in Summit County is 30% year round, thus snowmaking conditions do not exist until the temperature gets below 30 degrees. It is has not been, nor will be below 30 degrees for a long enough period of time in Summity County to start snowmaking until the beginning of October.

Fort Collins is not even close to Summit County is actual proximity, weather patterns, elevation, or temperature. This is a silly thing to cite.

I would be so happy, don't think it's gonna happen though without a big shift in the weather like everyone else is saying.

I drove past loveland yesterday and they had all their blowers out but it was ~75 all day in summit. I'm hoping for first week of october since they want to beat the 9th from last year.

We had natural snow fall on the 21st of Sept last year. Wonder when it'll hit this season. Its just one of those things here that you wake up one day and theres snow on the peaks and a dusting on the ground out of no where. I've decided its not worth the mind fuck to try to predict these things.

I have posted this picture probably 3 times on NS in the last week but I gotta post it one more time for you! I will remember that morning for the rest of my life. LOL! Waking up and looking out like "DA FUUUUUCKK?!?!?!"
