8th grader getting college scholarship for basketball

Dont you have to be in at least 10th grade before college scouts try to recruit you? im probably wrong, please correct me. I heard that it violates some sort of NCAA law.

But that kid is a champ

The safety for OU, Reggie Smith, was a sophomore at my school when USC and OU offered him a full ride...but 8th grade? Holy shit that kid must be pro.

Heres the rules I'm aware of ( this is the ones used for soccer and im pretty sure most collegiate sports....could be different for basketball though no idea)

You are allowed to Email or Call the coach whenever.

Sophomore Year

They can email back starting your sophomore year but can't call back

Junior Year:

They can start emailing you without you emailing them but can't call

Senior Year:

They are allowed to call you once a week. (your allowed to call them and talk whenever)

My guess is someone told the kid to call coaches and im sure most this shit went through his parents.

Also.

I'm pretty positive a kid can commit to a college whenever he wants. He can't sign his letter binding him to a contract with that school until Senior Year.

Pretty risky for coaches to be offering this kid a scholarship so early. shit can change between now and before he graduates.

also the kid should have left his options open until his juinor year at least. if hes that good PLENTY more colleges would have talked to him

it said in the article that the coach wasn't allowed to call the kid or his parents. his dad called once and left a message, but the coach couldnt reply. the dad called again and the coach picked up, so it was ok for them to talk and he offered him the scholarship right there. im pretty sure you have to atleast be in hs to have it official, but i guess if the coach likes him at 8th grade and the kid is searching around the country for a good hs to play at, then hes legit.

thats not that rare my younger brother is an 8th grader and hes 6'3". the weirdest thing is that both my parents are 5'10"

^ 6' 3". idk man thats pretty huge for an 8th grader. a 6' 3" guy would def look tall at my high school

True but that is only for the school to talk to the kid. However if the athlete/parent calls them first they can negotiate.
