4FRNT and Lars Veen

I picked up the new 4FRNT Catalog at the Vegas ski show. The following written piece was printed inside the back cover – I think it’s great:

If you're anything like us, you're out there risking it daily for that one moment you spent all night dreaming about. These moments definitely do not come easy and sometimes, your slams catch up to you. On December 10th of this past year, Lars Veen, a close friend from Norway and a member of the professional skiing family, injured himself while training early season down in Mammoth. Lars suffered an injury to his spine and has temporarily lost feeling and function below his chest. We are confident that Lars will walk again, but this experience has taught us a valuable lesson: we don’t know enough about spinal cord injuries. We believe that it’s time that the ski community takes responsibility and shows greater commitment to the athletes who make this sport what it is. To that end, we are in the process of establishing a foundation in Lars’ name to raise money from the ski community to fund spinal cord injury research. We intend to contribute a percentage of our sales to help fund the foundation and we will be actively seeking others in the industry to follow suit. We strongly believe that is our obligation to the sport we love and the family of athletes who participate in it. So, when you purchase 4FRNT Skis, you are not only contributing to the continued development of our sport, you are also making a difference to a cause that matters to all of us. THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT.

lars doesnt even ski 4frnts so great job to 4frnt to support a fallen skier. too bad alot of us are broke and cant buy skis all the time to help out

thats cool. that is the good thing about a newschool rider based company. good skis and good knowledge about the skiing

the people at Liberty skis are so nice

this confirms that 4frnt has integrity, and cares about the industry as a whole, as well as the individuals that make up the newschool ski scene. i am genuinely impressed, 4frnt.

You guys are all brainless sheep. 4frnt didnt even say how much they were donating for all we know it could be 5 bucks. So for 5 bucks they got some of the best advertising around. I mean taking out a magazine ad would cost more money than what they are doing now yet they are making themselves look great in your eyes and getting advertising...Its just smart business, and you guys are just stupid emotional saps.

Hah... way to not have any kind of heart there you stupid robot.

They clearly care about this boy, and I would rather just donate a bit of money.

^Na, this makes sense, after talking to Sterbens a little bit this year, it seems to go along with his plan to change the way the entire industry views freeskiing. He is tired of big companies putting their most daring athletes second to racers and middle aged groomer skiers, and I believe this is just the beginning...they're really good people over there and deserve everyone on this sight's support.

I have a heart you guys just arent looking at it from a business standpoint. I mean im sure they do care about the kid a bit and dont mind donating the money but Im also sure they are well aware of the good publicity they are going to get from it. If they were ONLY concerned about Lars why did they take the time to print up a one page flier about what they are doing good in teh industry.....come on guys you arent ALL this dense are you?

I really liek that direction. Who knows, myabe thye look at it as an investement. Help a few skiers who have suffered spianl injuries to ski again and they keep a customer.

You may be right, but I don't want to say it so as to say that the people at 4FRNT are trying to take advantage of someone's crippling injury.

it shows that 4 FRNT is a devoted comp, but i admit its also a business approach...

dspin7x has a point, but I'm still impressed. Whether it's just smart business tactics or truly caring about a fellow freeskier (which I believe is the latter of the two), I definitely have to hand it to 4frnt. Gives me more of a reason than the fact that the MSP is an AWESOME ski (minus the shitty graphics this year) to buy a pair.

Yeah Im not saying it wasnt a great idea, it helps people with spinal cord injuries(at least somewhat) and it makes 4frnt look great. Everybody wins! Except the people who are paralyzed, they lose.

the 4frnt guys (Joe, Matt, Steele) were there in Cali when lars was injured. they were there for him and his family when he was in the hospital at reno and followed him through his ordeal. lars is a good friend of theirs and their desire to help is genuine. lets not try to make this into a selfish act. the foundation to help study spinal cord injuries in lars' name is being started by 4frnt, but i'm guessing all the other ski companies will willingly support it and that will be a good thing for all of us.

Go 4FRNT..that is so good!!!..and poor Lars..he really is a sick skier...!!! i hope i will see you back as soon as possible!!

4 frnt is so hot right now.

good skis good company...

buy them, now!!!

lol

Props to 4frnt. They sat in the hospital with Lars everyday since his injury, up until his departure to his home. They do care a great deal, and it's true, freeskiers are taking drastically greater risks than racers and not getting the support they deserve.

Hopefully the Lars Veen foundation will start many comapnies in the right direction.

^^^^^^^^^^^to dspin7x (and all those who supported what he said): i know some of you wrote supporting what dspin7x said, but i think you're all off base on that. 4frnt cares deeply about lars and supported him daily while he was in the hospital in reno. i was at the powder awards in aspen during the x-games and steele and joe gave a presentation about the lars veen foundation and let all the athletes and sponsors know that they will be contacting them in the near future for their support with this great foundation. everyone there raised their glasses in support and cheered the effort. it was followed with encouragement from many in attendance who said they will happily support it. so dspin7x, please don't always assume people who do good things do so for selfish reasons. its not about the money or the self-promotion. its about caring for each other.

this is what dspin7x had to say:

Jumper900, dspin isn't saying that 4frnt are a bunch of non-caring people who only want to profit off of someone's injury, they took this injury as a way to help lars and others out, boost their own sales, and come out looking like kings. They are smart business wise to do this, even if it wasn't intended to boost sales.

Yes dspin has a point. But there wasn't much of a reason to be negative in this thread. Lars went down hard..and SOMETHING, even though it may be little, is being done about it..so let it be. 4FRNT decided to do something, so good for them.

its putting some money they make off skiers back into the industry - and i think its a very good reason to buy thier skis.

Or you could look at it as they are only trying to boost sales through this stunt/thread so the 1% they donate goes a lot farther.

Yeah... thats nice of 4frnt, but thats a great marketing scheme. Notice how the jumped on that about as quick as a dog on a steak. Thats nice though, even though their 1000 dollars will pay for the pens that the researchers will use to write things down with. I dont see any other companies doing it yet, but props.

>Out.

Welcome to Newschoolers. Now leave.

dspin i think your point is right but misguided. it is true that 4frnt is clearly getting good publicity from this act, though they are also getting it from their solid looking new line. however my point is that i believe their actions were not motivated by their desire to increase popularity and give themselves a good image, but instead they did something they believed in for a friend and that in turn has a positive effect on their image. do you think their motive was to look good to customers in a marketing scheme with this? i dont.

basically, the fact that they are good people and their actions represent something we all think is a good thing is an advertisement for them, but that doesnt mean thats their motivation. good companies run by good people who do good things for others deserve our respect and deserve publicity, there are a lot better marketing schemes they could have come up with if that was their real motivation imo.

think about what you would do if you saw a friend get in an accident like this, tried to set up something to help him out and help out others in his situation, and people called you on it as a pr move. i think its a shallow view.

sorry for the length

even if it was a marketing ploy to get people to buy more of their shit the more shit people buy the more money that goes into the lars veen foundation

Guys, of course it's a marketing theme, we even put it in our catalog for next year. The more skis we sell this year, the more money we can raise for Lars, get it?

Lars is a great friend of everyone here at 4FRNT and we do care a great deal about his well-being and the well-being of all the athletes out there daily, risking it all for peanuts. That's what this foundation is for.
