2nd Year College Housing Options?

Alright heres a question for you Newschoolers who have been through college. Right now Im going through my second semester of college at the University of Cincinnati. I commute at the moment because college is expensive as fuck and the cost is about half of what it would be if I had room and board expenses tacked on too. Next year I will most likely be getting some pretty good scholarship money that I couldnt get this year, and I'll have enough to like on campus. So heres the deal, do I live in the dorms, get a house with a couple of buddies, or get an apartment thats University Affiliated? I feel like the dorms suck, but theres a lot that goes on in them socially and its probably going to cost more than my other options. Would I be missing out on anything not living in a dorm at least one semester? Thanks for your opinions.

It depends on how much housing cost. iM getting and apartment with friends next year because when its split the rent turns out to be cheaper than housing. Do a little research and see what will be more cost effective.

if you know a lot of dudes, get a house. preferably crappy. get like 7 room mates, have a blast. After one year, you might hate it, but it wont be extremely expensive. if you hate it, find something that works. if you love it, re-up and scrape together money for another kegger.

if you dont know that many people, get a dorm spot. its not a big deal how old you are, and its much easier to meet people because everyone is in your same situation. I met a bunch of people in the dorms, guys and girls alike.

I had a blast living in the dorms for a year. then I spent a year in a slum with 6 roomies, then upgraded to a side by side condo, one room mate on my side, and we were great friends with the two guys on the other. Its exactly how I would do it if i had to again.

but good luck hombre

still in highschool, but live in Cincinnati, my friends brothers share an place off of campus down in Clifton and absolutely love it

Thats the thing, since I commute I dont know that many people on campus. I know a lot of the guys that I have classes with, but no one outside of that. Off campus housing is cheaper for the most part, but I just cant decide what I want to do. That condo set up sounds awesome though haha. +k for solid advice.

if it were me, and since your gonna be a soph, I would just live in the dorms. Its insane how many people you will meet, and youll be right there to hang with anyone you meet who has a house off campus. Although it is more expensive, I am assuming it is around 20k a year (maybe more maybe less, w/e) and for four years, your not going to notice that difference in the long run. Its up to you, whatever you do, itll work out.

What are your priorities? Are you going to college for the social elements and "The best 4 years of your life," or are you going to college to learn, get good grades, and transition into a career? Your housing decision rests upon your answer to that question.

Graduating is obviously a priority and so are grades to an extent. They dont need to be perfect, but a solid B-B+ is what I usually shoot for. Right now Im pretty much on an all study, minimal social life schedule since I dont live on campus and its driving me crazy, so it is partly for that aspect as well.

get an apartment with a bunch of friends, preferably in a similar major so you'll all be around the same level course wise so you can help each other out with classes, throw parties on the weekends, and have cool people to chill with during down time.

i'm living with 4 friends in an apartment just off campus next year and i'm beyond stoked for it. dorms blow

I know that this varies a lot school to school, but where I went only losers lived in the dorms after freshmen year.

The apartment would probably be your best bet, although I would look for somewhere not university affiliated (it's usually cheaper).

Deinitely depends on the school. If you have on campus apartments with a lax drinkng policy, that can be a ticket to a great year. Fraternity houses are a good option if youve joined one

Didn't read the thread but usually paying rent for a house/apartment comes out to be cheaper than staying in the dorms.

Imo, house>apartment>dorms if you're not a freshman. Around here basically the only people who are in the dorms are freshmen so if it's like that where you are at you may not have very much fun being in the dorms.

Also houses around here are way cheaper than apartments. Plus you don't have to deal with the multiple noise complaints you will have in an apartment if you have friends over. BAsically i'm saying a house with friends is the best option.

get a house, because then you have privacy, can throw parties and not bother anyone around you above or below like an apartment, and if you aren't picky you can probably find something cheap thats livable, the house that i live in now was built in 1978 but its insulated so it works
