2017/2018 On3p Thread

oh my - that is tempting. 193 is longish for me at 176cm though, very long, and with the BGs not exactly being noodles to begin with that might just be a bit more than i can chew off.

Do it Iggy.. you won't.

But seriously, I am stoked for the few people I know who could use the Supergoat. And also bring back the ugly top sheet contest.

I rocked my FRs in a similar situation for years. It’s weird at first, but you get used to it real quick as long as you know what your doing on skis. You’re certainly not going to be GS turning them in those conditions, but you’re also not gonna die. You’ve gotta kinda figure out where to put pressure while turning in those conditions, like for me it required more heel pressure in while on super icy conditions- but that almost made it really fun cause it was like a completely different experience and I was able to start doing these almost butter-turns when it was like that.

So yeah, you’ll be good, just go slow for the first run or two on ice just to kinda feel it out (or be really hammered — cause that’s what I did the first time...)

Kinda what I figured. I don't expect to be leaning all the way over on solid ice and holding a turn like that or anything, but being able to lean over a decent while turning when it's just regular snow is what I'm after. Usually when it's solid ice we just do speed runs anyway. I mean I don't think skis like JJs turn that badly (relatively) on harder snow half the time, so I'd imagine I can run with these.

I think one of the things that seperates ON3P from a lot of other brands is how obsessive they are about the finishing process of their skis. They get to you ready to ski, with wax, great structure, and sharp edges.

Man, you were not lying. They're skiing great.

I patrol and plan on these Kartel 98s being my everyday non pow day ski, but I also hit rails and jib on days off and fuck around all day while working. Because I also need these skis to be reliable and have a good edge hold while running toboggans and whatnot, I'm pretty adverse to detuning my edges.

I convinced myself that after skiing a couple days on a fairly icy groomer that id be good to go without a detune. Well....yeahhhh....

I spun a few park laps on my day off on Saturday and I ended up catching the inside edge of my back foot on a tube 2x. The second time I fully straddled the tube and supermanned off of it and sprained my hand. I've never not once ever done that; catch the inside edge of my back foot on a feature and superman forward.

So yeah. I can attest that the factory tune is pretty damn good lol.

I took a gummy stone to my skis at the end of the day and worked out a couple burrs and I'm hoping the edges are still sharp but maybe not so sharp to launch headfirst off of a feature.

Yes, they would probably eat you alive. Tell all your friends though, Big & Tall, Fat & Wide.. or anyone who just plain rips and has access to big mountain-style terrain.

I'm quoting you all over the place;)

I really want to move somewhere soon with better big mountain terrain. Not too bad here in SE Idaho, but lack of snow kinda holds us back. Thinking of making a move.. just trying to find a place that isn't crazy expensive and crowded. I have a few ideas, but the drive to the resort would be more than an hour, which I'm not stoked on. Other locations would be me in the backcountry 75% of the time, which would be cool..

Supergoats are getting lots of interest. Step it up if you want some as we may not make them after this first two weeks :)

Big Sky! I pay a little over $800 a month, walk to lifts, and the mountain is gnarly.

SLC is cool, but I feel like I’d need a new transmission and new brakes every year commuting up LCC. Plus smog..

Teton Village is just insane.

Mammoth might not be stupid expensive, but haven't really checked.

I really need to check out big sky.

Its expensive though! I've looked at the pass prices and it's crazy. And $800 is insane.. for me at least. I could live in Bozeman I guess.. but it's always nice to be closer.

SLC is cool.

im debating just stayin where I'm at though..

Only 2-3 hours away from everything you mentioned besides mammoth. And I guess big sky is 5 hours.

Also, I'll never forget the day you totally exposed me Scott! That revision is a marketing company thread truly changed mah view my dude.

Why is there a 191cm Billy Goat for $5000 in the section called champagne room on the website? There's obviously a joke I'm missing here. Can somebody explain?

If memory serves me, someone (or someones) on TGR said they would pay $5000 for a 191 BG (current largest size is 189 - which is virtually the same, especially since ON3P runs true to size and most skis don’t), so now it’s up there. I could be wrong on that one, but I seem to remember a story about it at one point.

I just broke my ugly top sheet Filthy Riches the other day. It was the end of the sexiest ski I’ve ever seen. After 5 seasons, it’s now time to mojnt up the skis on a wall.

Please remember to bury me with them.

I also love the idea of a 193 BG, I skied two seasons on Billy Goats, then the past two seasons on Jeffrey 122s, as much as I loved the Jeffrey’s, there was just something about the BG that makes me want to get them again (instead of some Kartel 116).

Between skiing at two hills, I’ve found that the Jeffrey works really well at one hill, and can have some weaknesses on the other hill. Where as I feel the BG balances well in the middle for all types of terrain.

If you get my drift, I kind of forgot where this response is going.

You'd love the Kartel 116's.

I've had at least one pair of BG's in my quiver since the first year 191's, 11/12 I think? I've owned Caylors which were one of my favorite skis ever, and 3 variations of Jeffrey's (OG 108's/110's/and 122's). I personally thought the Jeffrey 122's were a step back from the Caylor's, and would grab BG's on any soft day 9.5 days out of 10 before grabbing the Jeffrey 122's.

In my opinion, the Kartel 116's were everything I loved about the Caylors and everything the Jeffrey 122's were not. Way more agile and nimble than Caylors/Jeffrey 122's, but just as stable as every ON3P ski you've ridden and loved. I honestly did not expect to enjoy the Kartel 116's as much as I did, I demo'd them just to get a feel for the new model and came away exceptionally impressed. I will definitely be picking up a set of Kartel 116's.

I will always have a place in my heart and quiver for BG's. While I don't currently have any BG's in my possession, I will definitely have some before the end of the season.

...point being, try out some Kartel 116's before writing them off. You may find yourself wanting both Kartel 116's and BG's...haha.

I was also surprised on how well my new magnus's came detuned underfoot. Super stoked on that because it usually takes a while to file them down that smoothly.

Literally gone back in forth between the BG and the Caylor/Jeffery/Kartel for like the last 7 years. I love them all. I went from BG's back to K116 for the last 2 years. Ready to get back on BG's for the experience they deliver. But I could be happy on either.

I feel ya there. I think the Jeff 114 in 181 would be my favorite..

i need to spend more time on a newer BG in my size... I've only taken like 5 runs total on any BG.

Just bought one of the two pairs of 171 Magnus left on the site. This is the first time I'll have a ski that isn't a a few seasons old and my first new ski in a while. Feels good, and good thing it's 71 degrees in november too so I'll get to use them super soon... Send me lots of stickers pls?

Stoked for some new skis, hasn't been the same since I blew out my Jefferies or snapped the Filthy Riches.

It's exactly what BWalmer said.

Over on TGR, there is a lot of bitching about how there is no 190+ option for the BG while in reality the 189 and 191 are more or less the same ski.

Sort of.

Last year (I believe) they went from a 191 BG to a 189, but the ski is effectively the same.

This year they're offering a limited edition Super BillyGoat in a 191 which will be longer (again I believe) and stiffer with a different tail profile.

SuperGoat is in a 193, not 191.

you have 3 flex choices with the SG. Normal BG flex, 1.5x BG flex, or 2x BG flex.

i think in their pre order run that ended last night they sold about 15 pair

Ah thank you. I knew it was a 190+, I just forgot to check how long.

2x aka the Aever flex.

Glad they got that many sold. If I lived out west I would have definitely picked a pair up.

Yeah the Aever flex is 2x stiffer than a Normal BG.. at least that is what they say. Which baffles me cause I know I'm a small dude but I can imagine being on something 2x stiffer than a current BG. The new SG is also 118 underfoot... so a tad bit wider.

hopefully powtron can confirm how many they actually sold.

The vast majority of people don't need to ski a 190+ ski and I'm speaking from a lot of experience given that I've skied longer skis than almost anyone on this forum (218 cm, 210cm, and 193cm).

Being 6'2 and 220+ doesn't automatically require a ski that is over 190 cm. A stiffer ski>a longer ski.

2 or 3cm in length is nothing, unless it's in your pants.

Every cm counts at that size. Flex as well.

sure, there are skis out there that are longer. But not as versatile, durable, etc etc.

trying to get my buddy to pick up a pair next year if he can't find a pair of 191 caylors laying around. He's about 6'2 ish and maybe 200 pounds ish... he's outgrown his 183 park skis and his 185 pow skis and needs a real tool!

That’s why I said “AND ski very hard”. When I say very, I mean VERY. Every day, on Big Mountains like Big Sky, Mammoth, Squaw, Jackson.

You can only speculate, you have no experience being that size. Your word means nothing on this matter.

I have learned a lot about you in that post. You speak like you have experience, when you are just speculating. You probably do that more than I previously expected.

just as I was coming around to you too..

I used to be 175lbs, when I was young. then 185, then 195, now over 205lbs. Every pound demands a longer and stiffer ski, it’s almost “exponential”. I like skis that are both long and stiff, not one or the other.

Every cm counts when your this size, and again you would have no clue. No further comment needed.

See, the funny thing is, I have experience skiing on skis that size in a lot of different conditions and actually skied them hard.

Let me ask you, can you tell the difference between a 191 and a 193? Or a 191 and a 195? How about a 205 and a 207? Or 211 and 215?

When I was racing the ONLY difference I could tell between ski brands was the stiffness. And I can tell you for a fact all my friends and competitors felt the same way. A guy who as 6'2 225 wasn't going to go ski a brand because of the extra 2cms, he was going to find a ski that offered a stiffer flex.

Every pound doesn't demand a longer ski, it demands a stiffer ski.

If that wasn't the case you'd see a lot more 190+ skis out there because there are a lot of fatasses in this world who think they can ski hard.

You are right about flex, but I just feel differently about length.

You could argue your way out of a paperbag, and make it sound good. I get it, you know everything.

I am speaking from experience, not speculation. I own 189 Goats, 191 Goats, and now AEverflex Supergoats.

4cm makes a big difference to me, idc what you would have me believe.

I challenged you on TGR. Lets go.

Between a 191 and a 193.. there's not a huge difference. But a 189 and a 193 there's a difference.

also, it's the flex choice that is really cool.

and you get that beefy, damp, durable ON3P feel with the RES and all that jazz.

yeah, you could get a 203cm or whatever it is with a faction ct 3.0, but that's not 118 underfoot, probably not as stiff, and dear god not near as durable or damp. Not that it's a bad ski, but very different.

the 193 on3p SG and the 196 4frnt Renegade probably come out to be the same size, but different skis in terms of stiffness (although stock ren is stiff, you can't go aever flex.) shape, versatility, etc.

Im not speaking from personal experience, as I am only 5'8" and 135 pounds at the moment (thanks firefighting), but yes, my best friend has a park ski that is the same length as my pow ski that is a bit big for me.. so yes, every cm and flex counts. Especially when you're looking for a good ski like ON3P
