A few people on Ski Builders have fish scaled their bases with pretty good success. On the ascent they performed well except for icy or really steep skin tracks. On the descent there weren't any reports of skiing issues anywhere.
I doubt any of them skied them switch either. Personally I feel like these would be sick skiing switch in powder though, something to help scrub a bit of speed, slow things down, and make navigating turns easier.
Base grinding, the skis surface has looks impossible to grind. The guys on ski builders fish scaled bases were cut into the base, so they could be ground just fine, but a loss of grip would likely happen as the cuts wouldn't be as deep.
Like I said, right now it's pretty niche but I'm glad people are trying stuff like it. Hopefully people stay on that train to move it forward within the next few years. Having a ski that you didn't have to pull off, or apply skins to would be something legendary forsure.
