Dearest friends of NS,

Now that SIA and ISPO have come and gone, I thought it might be helpful to create a little thread highlighting some of the new boots for next year. It was a very busy year for us with lots of new mold investment in the freeski, all mountain, and touring worlds. Take a peek and let me know if you have any questions about these or any of our boots. I'm stoked to hear what you think.

The all new Overload Series:

Developed over the last 2 years in close cooperation with our athletes, the all new Overload series features a entirely new medium fit (101mm) with a really narrow heel, Carbon High Back cuff, adjustable flex (+/- 10 flex points), adjustable forward lean (13°, 15°, 17° options), full length/width rubber boot board, one of the lowest stand heights on the market, and with replaceable dual-hardness soles. 120, 100, 70 flex options available. Gus, Andreas, Elias, Keefer, and co have been slaying it on the 120 since September and it's awesome to see how stoked they are on it.

The all new Waymaker Carbon and Waymaker Tour Series:

Waymaker Carbon Series - Chris Benchetler was super instrumental in the evolution of this boot and it was really a pleasure to bring this boot to life with him. Featuring a Polyurethane main body with our race inspired Carbon Spine, this is finally a 130 walk mode boot that skis as powerfully as a fixed cuff boot. Medium fit (101mm) with a really narrow heel, new walk mechanism that locks the cuff to the shell, 35° of cuff range of motion, swappable norm grip pads (ships with DIN but our Touring norm grip pads can be put on for total binding compatibility), grip pads screw into metal inserts for maximum durability and power transfer, and a special full length/width boot board that provides maximum insulation from the cold. 130 and 110 flexes available.

Waymaker Tour Series - Essentially the lighter brother to the above boot, the Tour Series uses a Pebax main body with Carbon Spine, a 280 gram Intuition liner, same mechanism and cuff ROM, but ships out with Touring norm grip pads made with Skywalk Rubber and Dynafit specified tech inserts. 110, 100, and 90 flexes available.

And in case you missed the write up done by MacMahoooon and Schmuck, here is the link to the NS Atomic coverage from SIA:

Depending on sizes (currently on a 318mm BSL) and of course fit, I'm definitely going to see about getting the Overload 120.

Any reason why you guys solely keep the rubber toe thing in the spk to prevent toe ban and not in any other of your boots? Its a great idea that I wish were on more boots in your line up. The spk is too wide for my feet.

Wheres the cool fake shoe tongue or wutang graphics?

I want to try a pair on, I like the narrow heal and the last. I think it would fit me pretty good. I hope a shop near me gets them in.

no intuition liner in the waymaker carbon?I might have missed it, but I think you only specified that for the lighter version waymaker.

Incredibly super duper interested in the Waymaker Tour. I can only hope it fits me seeing as I want a new boot next year, and that's my best bet.

Few questions.

1. Waymaker Tour compatible with the new Beast binding? I've heard there are some heel changes on the binding side when it comes to how binding and boot fit.

2. Waymaker Carbon (130) compatible with the Dynafit spec inserts found in the Tour? (Or am I just thinking there is only one type?)

3. Weight (as per pair) of the Waymaker Tour (110)? Waymaker Carbon (130)?

Thanks man! Carbon 130 is $699, Carbon 110 is $599, Tour 110 is $699, Tour 100 is $599, Tour 90 is $499, Overload 120 is $499, Overload 100 is $399

Originally, when we were prototyping the boot, we had an Intuition liner in but Chris and other athletes wanted something with more downhill performance. Carbon 130 will use a really high end "alpine" style liner, similar to what we use in our Redster series of boots. Super durable yet moldable foams which ensure a custom and long lasting fit, with the addition of a flex zone in the back to aid in hiking/touring.

Few answers:

1. I assume so. Dynafit Beast binding requires that a metal rim is drilled onto the heel's boot/binding interface. As long as that piece is added, the boot will work with the Beast.

2. Yes, the grip pads of the Carbon and Tour series boots are swappable among each other.

3. For a pair of 26.5, the Carbon weighs 4200 grams and the Tour weighs 3500 grams.

Any chance you could give more details about the carbon spine? for example how you integrate it into the manufacture of the boot or specifics on increased performance?

I tried the Overload 120 last week, and it is amazing, very comfortable, yet a good stiff flex without it beeing to much for both park and backcountry.. The Live Fit zones on each side of the boot, really makes is comfortable, without compromise performance. Did not try the Overload 100, but have tried this years, and it is also a very good boot.

Just for information i normally ride a Dalbello Il Moro, and I got narrow feet.

Carbon Spine originated in our Redster series last year. What we do is start with traditional polyurethane (PU) and mix real carbon fiber strands into the PU granulate. The resulting mixture produces a plastic that is up to 9 times stiffer than normal race-grade PU and we modify the carbon content for the appropriate flex boot. Carbon Spine is right where you want to have it- in the rear for support and on the sides for power transfer. And being PU at its heart, it completely boot-fitable.

We have developed unique Carbon Spines for each type of skier. The Carbon Spine in Redster is geared for World Cup stability & ultimate power transfer, where the one in Waymaker Carbon/Tour is not quite as powerful but still way more powerful than normal, and the Overload's Carbon High Back offers the best blend of support for big landings but still flexible enough for butters and presses. Here is a close up of the Overload 100's Carbon High Back (and Flip Chip which controls the flex and geometry):

So you tried it at the SIA on-snow demo? It's awesome you got the chance to ski it- everyone who has gotten the chance to ski it has been blown away by it. It's really got a unique feel to it, in terms of securing the foot, providing energy transmission, yet being supple enough for finessing rails and butters. More than a couple athletes (who must go unnamed) spoke to me at SIA about it because it is just so different to many boots out there.

No I actually tried it at a dealer demo in Austria ;) Yeah it really got a unique feel to it, in the good way. I think I'm falling in love with the live fit zones for freestyle skiing, it feels really good. When you have the boots on the feet and in the hands, you can just feel how well build they are, such a nice quality product.

The Live Fit zones are great because they are on the outside of the foot, right where common 6th toe problems occur. And you don't lose any performance through them. I recently talked to Daron Rahlves when he was over for the Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm and he is the biggest fan of it. He's always had trouble with boots being uncomfortable and at the same time having rather high performance standards, so that he chooses a boot that uses Live Fit is a really good testament to how well that technology works.

A quick note on the build and quality of the boots.... Atomic is such a rad company to work for right now. They have given my boot team the resources necessary to make truly legit freeski boots, when in the past they usually saved that kind of investment only for the race program. It's pretty awesome to be able to focus on freeskiing with the same attention to detail and passion usually reserved for the race room.

How did the boots feel on jumps and smaller more techie things? What kind of skis were you testing the boots with? Really curious about these boots. Seems like Atomic has some pretty sweet things lined up, can't wait to try them out.

I tried the boots with the new Punx, Bent Chetler, Automatic, Blog, some in vantage series and some in the nomad series, and next years Salomon BBR's. Unfortunately not the Atomic Infamous :(

There was no kickers or rails unfortunately, so just som BC stuff and piste, there they was very comfortable, didn't feel to stiff and felt like a good connection to the skis.

Yeah the new things from Atomic looks amazing, and everything has such a nice quality feel to it.

Wow so you skied them on some rather wide skis and the 2-buckle design didn't feel like it was lacking any power or anything? That sounds awesome

Well Punx and some in the nomad and vantage series does not count at wide skies in my mind ;)

Well I was not out skiing steep lines, but I'm pretty sure that the Overload 120 can handle that, but I don't think the 100 can do that for the heavy guys. Yeah, it didn't feel like it was lacking power because of the 2-buckle design, that system has already proven it self in the Salomon Ghost boots from this and previous years also.

For whatever it's worth, I am 175 lbs and have always skied 98mm boots (26.5) and spent all of last year in the Redster Pro 130. This year I have spent some of the time in the Waymaker Carbon 130, but honestly most of my time has been in the Overload 120 skiing on everything from GS skis to Punx to 193 Automatics. This boot has such a killer fit and enough power transfer to handle anything I have ever wanted to do that I don't think I will go back to my Redsters ever again.

For sure thought about it, but the extra 2 million Euros was something we couldn't exactly shake out of the couch cushions

Maybe the following yeah, eh? There is a gap in market for a true low volume "touring" boot for sure.

Skiing Tracker 130 now for resort skiing. Best boot I've owned. Can't wait for the Waymaker 110 for ski touring. Nicely done "onenerdykid"

Well, as Surface just mentioned (and thanks by the way!), we do have a pretty awesome low-volume walk mode option right now called the Tracker. 98mm last, 4 buckle, and we added the Waymaker mechanism to it which will makes it ski even better. This is the boot that Daron Rahlves uses (no special mods, literally skis it out of the box), so if you are looking for a stiff walk mode boot perhaps look to that for now.

Damn. 35 degrees of walk mode and a 130 flex that probably holds true plus Dynafit compatability?
I know what I want for next year. Awesome work, Atomic.

Thanks! They are pretty psyched on the boots over here in Euroland too. The Waymaker Tour 110 won an ISPO Award during their version of SIA.

I'm looking for a true low volume boot, stiff, with tech soles & Vibram (or similar). Walk mode is my lowest priority, by a long way. It pains me to buy any Salomon gear but that's looking the most likely option for next year.

I'd take a walk mode if it doesn't affect how the boot skis & flexes in ski mode, but I've toured a lot in the past 3 years without one so can live without it for sure.

Gus just took 2nd place in Super Pipe at Sochi in them, so stoked!

If you like the feel of an Intuition Liner, they will for sure fit in there without any issues. I would say give the stock liner a try because the guys really like the way it feels but to each their own.

@onenerdykid: Are there any differences in the 120, 100 and 70 other than the flex? Like, is the 70 meant for kids and therefore has weaker components etc?

And the liner, how does it feel and form to your leg? I currently have full tilts who are super fitted because of the intuition liner, how is the one in the boot compared to that?

thanks

I feel like we're getting really close to a touring setup that can truly charge. Stoked that some companies are pushing that.

The 120 uses stiffer plastic and our Pro level liner that has our Shockilla Heel, a silicone insert on the heel to cushion the heel on switch landings. The 100 is thus slightly softer and uses our Sport level liner, which does not have silicone insert but still a super high level of heel hold. Both models come with the Hard and Soft Flip Chip so you can independently adjust the flex and forward lean. The 70 is more of a junior/tweener model that has the same basic fit but with out the ability of adjusting the flex or forward lean.

I would say that both our Overload liner and Intuition liners have their own pros and cons (we are a partner with Intuition and use them in the Waymaker Tour 110 model). Intuition will be lighter, a bit warmer, and moldable wherever their foam is present but you cannot vary the foam layup from the heel to the toe- it is the same constant thickness and foam orientation. Our Overload liner is slightly heavier, still quite warm, and also moldable but we can vary the foam thickness and foam type wherever we want so we can place different foams in different areas for the exact fit and feel we are trying to achieve. Obviously Intuition makes a fantastic liner- I've personally used them for years which also means I know where they are good and bad. But in the end, pick whatever feels best and works best for you.

And so are our athletes, which is super awesome. Chris has been skiing the Carbon 130 for over a year now and does everything in it, including 6 hour tours. Sage is also in the Carbon 130 while Dana is skiing in the Tour 110. Dana put the DIN grip pads on his Tour 110 and pretty much uses that boot all the time now.

which boots did you like more? the Il Moro's are what I have been looking at for a while (this year's), but now that I have done a little research and thread reading, this might be a better choice. I am a park and moguls skier and need something that can support me on the mountain too. Is there anything that you dont like about the Il Moro's? anything you really like about them? and is there a big difference between the Dablello's and Atomic's?

In terms of stability and power, most of our Pipe athletes opt for our Redster race boot to get an ultra powerful set up. But, the Overload's new construction makes for a very stable and powerful boot. Check out Gus' 2nd place run at last week's Sochi World Cup with the new Overload 120. Pretty sick that a 2 buckle boot can give World Cup Super Pipe performance.
