2012/2013 CO Backcountry Skiing/Stoke Thread

Caic is done with reporting. I am assuming we are in the green now as long as you go in the morning?? Has anyone skied anything recently? Friend of mine did Cristo on Quandry and said it was all good. Whose got any reports besides Mr. Records? Post up!

I live right near Quandary but I've been out of town the last month. I just came back from a month at sea level so I'm gunna skin up breck a few times to get re-acclimated. Going from sea level for a month to my house at 10,000 feet really fucks you up.

Anyways, anybody want to ride Quandary with me and/or some other lines near/around Summit? I'd be down for whatever, almost whenever since I don't have a job right now.

Last time I was out was last Saturday. Skied the north and south side of Mt. Edwards up Stevens gulch. Summer snowpack on south aspects, evolving snowpack on north aspects. Found 2 feet of windslabs on top on high north aspects. Assuming those upper windslabs are draining now, but I doubt that high north aspects are draining all the way to the ground. Like you said, I suspect that in the afternoon there is still the possibility of a deep wet slab avalanche triggering on wet basal facets. Otherwise I'd say the main concerns are cornice fall and loose wet avalanches.

Skied Mt. Arkansas last Tuesday, found a remarkably unstable snowpack up high on north aspects. It was because of melt water that had reached a crust layer about 25 cm down and formed a water lens. Ended up skiing a cool north couloir that had already slid then built some fun jumps lower down.

I've been planning on a quandary mission soon. Hit me up! All my friends keep bailing when I want to go haha

hey strey what about silver coulair on buffalo ? That should be good to go? I really want to hit that sometime

I'm down to do just about anything as long as skins or crampons aren't crucially needed haha (had to sell a bunch of gear when I didn't have a job for a while). I have 3 days off in a row next week so really itchin to get out. I bet it's looking good right now with the decent freeze/thaw cycle the past few days although it's looking like it'll get hot this coming week so I'm not sure.

In case you guys haven't seen it, here is my season edit. Its all filmed in the BC - a fair amount of which is from the Steamboat zone. To put it in context all these lines were deep in the BC, some reached after 20 miles of river and glacier crossings. Also, I just took a permanent job in AK, so looks like I'll be there next winter, but can't wait to get back to Colorado.
