is this because of the NOA being the same week. If it is Fuck Jon and Simon for trying to monopolize this sport and take it away from the kids who are in it because they love it.
If not because of them, then fine they are both cool

I'm not sure but I believe NAO and USO were scheduled for completely different months for 2009.

I also heard that NAO might not even happen because Jon wants to focus on his JOSS event and Simon is doing his own thing in Sunday River.

Thats so gay the whole opens tour is canceled so no nao, mount snow, or big bear. The only open slopestyle this season is aspen open.

Hi. I'm the ski industry and I suck. I'm going to do away with almost every open contest and give no one the chance to compete on a high level. Snowboarding, my little brother has enough money to lay down a $5M budget for a movie, but I suck so much I can't set up a contest. whoops.

but seriously... it just sucks that almost all the opens were canceled, and more invite only contests added in.

Wrong. It should be, Hi, I'm the economy and I suck. Don't put blame on the industry. Obviously the industry wants nothing but growth.

WHAT THE FUCK! thats the gayest shit i have ever heard, y cant it be the other way around and half pipe not be in, i would way rather do slope then pipe. are sport is going to turn into strictly half pipe if this continues. I think every one on ns should make a donation and we should hold our own event with out the big names and big sponsors and show the world that NS is capable of!

True. You got me.

But, the ski industry is one of the markets that is least affected by the bad economy, (or so I hear). I imagine that on the corporate level a ski competition isn't considered a necessity and costs/budget for that type of event would be cut. So yeah, stupid economy. I retract that first statement.

you are really wrong, the skiing industry is one of the most effected by the economy.
Why is this? its because people dont have as much money any more, no one has jobs, and no one is going to want to pay to go on a Vatican with money they dont have right now! Ski areas make no money on pass holders they rely on tourist

maybe we should take this time as an opportunity to create a competition that represents the other half of skiing that was left behind in skiing...... I think its called rails. Rails are supposedly "half" of slopestyle, and yet they count for shit when it comes to contests. I'm tired of seeing a basic 450 disaster in a comp, shit is the THE most consistent trick you can do, especially on a box. Then its followed by doubles that are grabbed, but most of the time have NO style. people forgot that style isnt just a grab.
fuck the representation of this sport. when skiing branched into what it is now 2 years ago, i was hoping it would have gone the other way.... now theres only a select few on that highly respected level that are keeping it ill, the rest are on a low represented and keeping it where i like it. People can do what they want, but when you gotta do the same trick as everyone else to compete, shits not even a competition anymore where each riders personal style and uniqueness comes into play. Its just a game of PIG

wow this sucks! Slopestyle is by far better than half pipe. All half pipe is spin to win.
At least slopestyle gets to mix it up with rails or boxes or whatever. and riders get to show some creativity.

Yeah. That's why I said "or so I hear". I thought the same thing as you.... but a friend of mine was putting together a business proposal for a bank to fund his shop, and had lots of information about how the snow sports industry is still one of the fastest growing industries and less affected by the economy. I agree with you really... it makes way more sense. I would like to think that the people that go on annual ski trips look at it as a tradition and will cut other costs before doing that. And it seems like a good portion of the people who ski (especially weekend warriors and tourists) are middle to upper class people who should still have enough money to spend on things like vacation.

I don't know, but it's a really interesting topic, and if you find some information about it send it my way. I like that shit.

There should be a contest where you can't spin over a 9, maybe even a seven. And your run doesn't even count unless you grab AND you have to spin different ways possibly even every hit. Each feature will be worth the same amount of points and for however many jumps there are there will be a rail. No boxes allowed.

woooooooooow there better be some opens at least next year what about guys like me that wanna try the whole competition thing out at some point in the future but won't be able to find a way into it because of everything being invite only? this is fucked up.

I apologize first of all for some incomplete thoughts in this response. I am rushed and waiting to get on a flight.
I wonder if people realize the ramifications of doing away with Slopestyle this year.
Without Slopestyle and Big Air, we would not have stories like Philou Poirier, Vincent Dorion, and TJ Schiller's. Think of how many kids will not have a chance to prove themselves this year. It seems every season it gets harder for a young rider to cut his/her teeth. Lottery systems have left this sport's competition progression to CHANCE, and now this.
The US Open is supposed to be open. It should embody all aspects of freeskiing, not just Halfpipe. There are so few good halfpipes in this country and abroad, how are kids supposed to train and prepare if the terrain is simply not offered?
In response to the economy suggestion, that our economy is directly affecting our contest scene. This sport has hosted competitons with limited budgets every year since its conception. The current economy is affecting the corporations. Obviously, the corporations give money to the contest organizers in return for advertising rights, this is sponsorship. The problem is that we have let these contributions get so out of control in terms of size that now, without corporate support, the contest simply can not run. I agree that corporations have given this sport some opportunities that are truly spectacular like the first 2 Icer Air events, these were truly special events and now it seems like every comp has to have a jumbotron to be legit and it simply is not the truth. If you've seen the old US Open VHS videos that FREEZE used to sell, the biggest sponsor of the Open was Nature Valley Granola Bars.
I am saddened today by this news.

Any unknown kid would compete in the US open slopestyle regardless of prize money or big name sponsors. The US open is their one and only shot towards BIG exposure. For pros its about money, which can be made at invitationals. For amateurs, its a shot into the industry. Its not about money. Hell they would even compete on any mountain's terrain park as long as its labeled "US OPEN."

...and you submit your run to the internationally balanced representation of judges ahead of time to make sure you have all the required elements in your performance. maybe set it to music, and dont forget to wax unsightly hairs.

thank you so much that whole post is so solid + mad karma, our sport is all about trends. Especially with grabbing most of the kids i ride with throw style out the door and just look at the grab. Overall though stuff has to change or at least be more diversified.

u just gave the definition of aerials, the thing that all of us love about our sport is the freedom to do any thing u want. if you start making all of these rule like a mute grab is more then a japan, and u have to spin both ways no matter what the sport is going to turn into aerials.

does anyone know why they canceled it? if its money reasons, depending on how much, NS should do something. like alpine initiatives, but waaay more people would be tempted to pitch in. NS members could get so much money for something like this, that matters so much to the progression of our sport

Western Canada doesn't even have any halfpipes. As far as super pipes go, there are only, what? three in both BC and Alberta combined.

At least there's the Aspen Open....

I feel like it's a bit lame that they're just doing pipe. The pool of competitors in open slopes is always so much bigger than in pipe. If the USFO wanted to pride itself on being the place for up and comers to break into the scene, they should have kept the slopestyle if they had to choose one.

Nippon Open might as well be an invitational. The majority kids who can afford to make it over there already have sponsors who will at least help pay for some expenses. Anyone can bum a ride to the Copper and sleep in the car or at a cheap hotel; a fraction of those people can afford to fly to Japan and stay there.

FUCKIN FOR REAL???!!! what the fuck man, that was the only comp i was gonna do, fuck this bull shit. US Open is the illest, most legit slope comp, i can't believe they would do away with it.
That's it, that's all, NEVER COMPETING AGAIN!!! you heard it here first

Superpipes: Blackcomb (is their night pipe still there? if so then 2), Cypress (I've heard it's hardly open, and it's short), Big White, COP.
Regular pipes: Silver Star... maybe Sun Peaks, Sunshine, and Apex? I'll check that right now

Kimberly, Fernie, and Lake Louise used to have pipes, but they got the axe shortly before RCR axed the jumps.
