Suzuki Presents the U.S. Freeskiing Open, at Copper Mountain Resort

11th annual U.S. Freeskiing Open brings professional and amateur athletes together to compete for $60,000 in cash and prizes.

Now in its eleventh year, the U.S. Freeskiing Open (USFO), presented by Suzuki, will return to Copper Mountain, Colo, Jan. 31 – Feb. 3, 2008, bringing together hundreds of the world's best new school ski athletes and thousands of eager spectators. Athletes will compete in three disciplines – superpipe, slopestyle and big air – for a combined $60,000 prize purse.

After last year's highly progressive competition, in which Jon Olsson introduced the Kangaroo Flip in the park and Peter Olenick landed a double flair in the pipe, this year’s event will surely be a highlight of the season. As always, Copper Mountain provides an ideal après and nightlife scene, with Boulder-based 3oh!3 bringing their heavy-hitting hip hop/rock sound to the Village following the Invitational Big Air event.

Maintaining the tradition of athlete involvement in the USFO, this year Copper Mountain's snowmaking and park crews will design the terrain park in conjunction with athlete input and feedback.

"It's exciting to be involved in this event and to have watched it grow so much over the years," said Jamie Pentz, group publisher of Mountain Sports Media, parent company of Skiing Magazine. "The USFO is an extraordinary opportunity in the world of new school skiing, bringing together top professionals like Simon Dumont with up and comers from across the country. Between the crowd's enthusiasm and the athletes' performance, this event is one of the highlights of winter."

Registration

The registration process has changed for the 2008 Suzuki USFO. Competition spots for the superpipe and slopestyle will be allotted via a lottery registration system, opening Nov. 15 at 5PM EST and closing Dec. 6. Participation in the lottery will cost $5 per entry and each athlete may register as many times as he/she wants. The system will randomly select athletes and successful competitors will be announced on TK. More information is available at www.usfreeskiingopen.com.

About the U.S. Freeskiing Open

The U.S. Freeskiing Open is the longest running, premiere freeskiing event in North America. Eleven years ago, the inaugural USFO gathered freeskiing's biggest hopefuls for the first slopestyle skiing competition ever. The next year, a halfpipe discipline was added and scores of unknown skiers poured in to help shape the sport. The event has served as a launching pad for countless new school skiers including Tanner Hall, J.P. Auclair, T.J. Schiller, Sammy Carlson and Copper's own Nick Mercon.

The 2008 Suzuki U.S. Freeskiing Open is produced by SKIING Magazine. Associate sponsors include: Copper Mountain Resort, SkiNet.com, tktktktktktktkt

not a huge fan of the lottery idea, but better than the shit they had to go through with registration last year. Kids will probably just pour hundreds of dollars into registration.

That's pretty lame. Some damn good skiers are going to get the short end of the stick. But then again, that happens every year, regardless if it is a lottery.

Whatever, so many tools will try to sign up. let them waste their cash.

yea, it sucks if you have some real sick talent that doesn't make it in. I almost think that they should have an open prequalifier. Like I know that at the open they have qualifiers and different rounds and shit, but they should have a prequalifier that is open to everyone, and like the top 100 or 200 or however many go to the open

Thats pretty stupid that people can enter more than one time, it should be one entry per person. It's more than stupid, it's ridiculous.

industry makes their money with those little guys dumping money into the contests for the short end of the stick haha

thats fucking rediculous.. i dont have tons of money to spend on fucking lottery tickets.

thats the dumbest shit i've ever heard.

Gay Gay Gay Gay Stupid Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Stupid Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Stupid Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay Stupid Gay Gay Gay Sorry if anyone is gay but this is the stupidest thing i have ever herd of .

so now the US Open is more about just who wants to get multiple lotto's then people who really want to be there and compete? hmmm...

so if your lucky enough to get a loto ticket...do you still have to pay the reg fee of 100 per event? This thing is redic... people are gonna spend soooo much. This is as bad as the Colorado Rockies world series ticket lotto system....

totaling boycotting that system...

they should have qualification in various resorts instead. they would make twice as much money and you would have gnarly crashes for no reason.

Haha I agree. Either we should all petition to the USO people and tell them to deal away with the as-many-entries-as-you-can-afford thing, or all of NS won't participate. Who would be down? Or at least everyone just buy one ticket.

wow lottery.. ??  thats pretty lame.. little rich kids will just buy their way in.. it should be based on ability.. not luck or amount of lotto tickets purchased. ghey.

WHAT THE FUCK???? SO now the richest is the one with more options?? what kind of system is that? and cooper claims to be part of the country of freedom and democracy? I can understand how they want to make money, but that can be done without destroying the democracy that thousands of people died to defend! EXAMPLE OF SOLUTION: Lotery tickets at 50$ and only one entrance per rider name. Everyone who has 50$ is equal. Now the spoiled kid is going to ask his dad for 500$ and will be in for sure... what the fuck?¿?¿? how come no one is already hacking that website?

I wouldnt even say this is an idea. I thaught idea was something higher thant that.

this is an idea:

www.helpmalasforusopenlottery.org

if you wanna see the first spanish guy competing at the usopen, sign in and give me 5 bucks so I'll get a chance.

thanks in advance.

listen:

yes this will be a lotto. yes that means lots of kids will dump loads of cash into it. NO it does not mean kids with talent will not get in.

this is the same system as used by WSI. anybody who bought a lotto ticket for that will remember the list of riders that came out of it. 90% of the names i had heard before, and im sure all of you had heard those same names before too. i guarantee the amount of places that will be given out by means of lotto will be no more than 20% of the total spots given out. the people organizing this shit are not stupid. they know that they need to give spots to the mike henituks, the matt haywards, max hills and jon brogans of the skiing world. they do this through company recommendations (if salomon has some amazing kid on their am team or something), connections with ski academies (waterville, cva or some other one) and plenty of things i don't even know about.

if you have any shot of doing well (and don't fucking kid yourself) you will get into the open.

now quit your pussy slurping and by 200 lotto tickets if you feel like getting your ass handed to you.

well I didnt take part in this wsi loto thinger

WSI is an invite only thing at first and then they decided it would be good to have a couple other kids so they added the loto.

us open was first to registrer + the guyz ski companies want to compete. This way a kid who had never skied but came on super early to teh registration system could get in. Now it's kinda the same, except the fatc that if you can spend 200$ buying loto tickets, you have more chance then the ski bum who can barely pay teh entry fees anyway.

I've always tought that 100$ for a comp was stupid and that it prevents the non-rich riders to get out there and get the recognition they deserve. Now it's even worst.

Now, if you think it's stupid, go put your 5$ in there and hope for the best. I wont hate you for that, I just think the us open organisator should have tought aout it in the first place and try to make an event OPEN to anyone who have the skills to compete not the money.

I,m not sure they would need to charge 100$ ++++ fees if they could explain to the insurance guyz that the people involved in the competition are professionnals or at least skiers that wpnt wreck themselves hard like they could if they ad qualifications.

please shut up.

you were not right when you said thousands of americans died so that when it came to the us freesking open, vagina face kids with humping dog pictures would have to pay the same amount of money as intelligent people with actual skiing talent. and you are not right now. they are still giving spots away from the lottery, and if you decide to spend 500 dollars on tickets, go ahead it isn't robbery if you hand somebody a sack of money and say "hey, i take it up the ass regularly. please take my money."

i would like to hear a reason why its not limited to one ticket per person and then upping the ticket price so not everyone enters

it depends whether you think fair is having the chance to get a spot, or if its getting a spot when you have the talent to do well.

for all that the ski world pushes, this lottery is everything against it. skiing is supposed to be about the love of the sport and who throws down the gnarliest tricks, not who wins a spot to compete to perform at the top level. those who perform at the top level deserve to be there and shouldn't get screwed by some stupid lottery. since when has skiing become so commercialized. we aren't looking to be the next nba or nfl. they can deal with their lotteries and BS. ridiculous, i hope the organization who planned this catches major heat

what happens to the kids who spend 100s of dollars on lottery tickets and then don't get selected? do they lose their money?

cool, so the us open is goin to b made up of a bunc o fuckin rich bitches this year. i dont even want to go now. that system is absolutely ridiculous. What some people will do for money...

Of course, that is the point of a lottery. You're buying more chances, but you won't necessarily win (or be selected in this case). If you were assured to get your money back, than it seems pretty stupid.

But yea, lottery of this kind is stupid. WSI has a lottery, but far fewer people go for the lottery compared to the US Open because there are sooooo many people who view the US Open as THE competition, whether they are good and compete at the level of the US Open, or whether they are mediocre, but are compelled to compete anyway (which happens in sickening numbers).

I'm going to say that yes a lot of people go to the open in hopes of winning and becoming known, but a ton of kids prolly go to the event to have fun and see how good they are against the pros. So for those kids who aren't looking to win but to have a good time are less likely to get in your saying?

WOW. THIS IS WHY SKIING IS SUCH A JOKE. WHAT THE HELL DO PEOPLE THINK WHEN THEY COME UP WITH THIS BULLSHIT. "WE NEED MORE MONEY, SO ALL THE KIDS WHO CAN DRAG MONEY OUT OF THEIR PARENTS DROP 300 DOLLARS SO YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE, AND FOR ALL THE SKI BUMS WHO MOVE TO WHISTLER, OR ANY OTHER RESORT LIVING PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK, GET FUCKED!"

jesus CHRIST.

they should really have open qualifiers, that would mean everyone could enter, and only the ones who should be in the open would be there...  the uso needs to get their shit together
