2008 Macbook pro vs. 2013 HP?

My sister wants to get a mac book pro from 2008 and I'm wondering how good it will be compared to newer laptops? Will spend up too $600 on mac or $500 on HP. Which do you think is a better option?

I haven't picked any out yet just wondering in general which would be a better option and she only will use it for school.

Actually that's pretty cheap for them, the second generations go for over $700 on ebay. Haven't found any that are less than $600 that are decent.

I know this isn't helpful but I would rather use a low end, used, 2005 mac book with a few keys missing than the newest HP laptop. I hate everything about them.

I use a '06 PowerBook as server.

Internet is fine, even youtube.

That said, she is probably better of buying something new.

Bump because I am wondering almost the same thing about whether I should buy an 08 macbook off ebay or a newer windows? Except My budget is 300 since I just sold my waterlogged macbook for 350 surprisingly enough. I posted it on ebay and someone bought it now within 20 minutes..

Anyway, I couldn't see myself using a windows after having a mac for the last 2 years..I'm looking at 2008 models with like the 2.1ghz. Probably basic from that year, I don't know much about computer specs. Ideally, I'm looking to be able to use microsoft office and also watch porn and not be too terribly slow..what y'all think?

Late 2008 macbook pro (Intel Core 2 Duo T9800 2930 MHz) scores a geekbench of 1560.

In comparison, the macbook pro I am typing on has a score of 3150.

The higher the better. There is no directory for windows computers because there's so many of them. You're going to have to give me a better description than just 'HP'.

However, HP do have an abysmal record for reliability, build quality and packaged software that comes with their computers. Apple however make much stronger computers (my mb-pro has an strong aluminium case, not many laptops do. It's heavier but I've pushed this off a table onto a ceramic tile floor, and there is absolutely no damage).

Apparently HP make there business computers far better, but they look really boring.

This is normally the key word when it comes to people making stupid 'which laptop' decisions...

OP as I said in my previous post, if you could tell us precisely which HP laptop it would be quite helpful.

Are you ok, man? The OP is from Jan. I bumped the issue with an issue of my own. Thanks for the help. However, not an HP. Just, in general, a 300 dollar windows vs a 2008 model mac on eBay.

Id go with an 08 mac than a $300 hp. For $300 your probably going to be getting a celeron processor, 2-4gb of ram, etc. Look at the specs. If you can find a newer pentium 4, it can outperform the celerons still.

And if you do go with windows, check out Asus. Hp is simply a shit show.

stay the fuck away from windows 8. It is terrible. I'm still using my HP from 2009 and hoping it doesn't crap out on me before the next windows comes out.

Unless of course you're getting one of those tablet laptops. then that is what Windows 8 is made for.

Mac book are extremely over priced. Literally just look into buying any high end laptop over a mac book. I would recommend looking through the refurbished section, they've been troubled shooted for every possible problem in the book already and are alsmot 3/4 to half the price of a brand new one.

honestly i find that in no way true. i switched from osx to win8 and after some getting used to it, it doesnt interfere with me on anything. you do NOT at all HAVE to use the metro ui. it is convenientin some situations even.

im not hating on what you said, im just giving you a more educated perspective on things, especially as you obviously have no clue what its like to use.

Given those two choices I would get the HP. Neither would be a good decision if you want a computer that's gonna last a long time. Both would probably be adequate for the next couple of years. By the time the mac hardware is totally obsolete, the HP will have fallen apart.

I can't believe the hype around macs is so significant that people would buy a 5 year old mac over a new pc regardless of price. Obviously specs play a huge role, but I highly doubt the mac is more powerful.

no, just no.

The only good thing about these chrombooks, is the fact that you can install ubuntu (chrubuntu ) on the Acer models, but mine shit out on me after 4 days.

Chromebooks are designed for children/poor/idiots.

Unless you only use google apps, and thats all your allowed to use.

Honestly, save some more money up, and get a $500 Asus, you can probably find a i3 easily, and possibly and i5.

Depends on the model. With the Acer, from what I remember its a 250 gb harddrive. So you could essentially save some stuff to it and work on it.

Samsung is like a 16gb SSD. Not much room, and essentially yes, you could save onto your flash drive.

And yeah, you do need it to be connected to have full functionality.

Wait a second... 08 Mac books are going for that much? Fuck. I have a 07 one with the backlight out on the screen and a disc drive that works sometimes... I use it as my media computer and just have it hooked up to a large screen. It has upgraded hard drive and memory. I'll sell it to her for $300 and even through in cs6 if it will run... I can buy a shitty PC for that much... Which I actually need so I can test websites on.

I revoke my suggestion. 08 is the new body style. I would recommend a hackintosh. A 5 year old motherboard is just asking for trouble. Uless you can find some replacements cheap as well as a new harddrive cause it would suck to spend $600 then need to spend another $500 on a new logic board.

damn, rachy knows her shit.

seriously dont go for old macs especially as something is bound to crap out. my 2011 macbook pro would have cost 900€ for repairs.

wait... I bought my 2008 MBP for 600 bucks 2 years ago... wtf? They absolutely have to be going for less than that...

you must be looking in all the wrong places.....my laptop got stolen july '12 so I was on a tight budget, I bought a mid 2009 Macbook (the white one) for $375, had barely ever been used and even came with microsoft office.

You should look for a better deal

Your sister is an apple f@g and only wants the mac because of the OS...Honestly if she is just gonna do random shit on it like write papers, skype, and browse mandingo porn let her get the mac...Now if she is doing stuff like graphic design and other stuff that needs a powerful computer tell her to get the HP..She can downgrade to windows 7 if she doesn't like the OS...TL;DR Get the HP
