200 ss with flash

Right now im kinda between cameras and I am using a rebel xt. I was wondering if there anyways to make your shutter speed higher when you using the flash? It happens even with my external speedlight.

If I get what you are trying to say its that the XT wont let you shoot fast 1/200 with a flash?

If thats what you are saying then that should be right, your sync speed is 1/200 so any faster and your camera wont catch it. (I think, still learning with flashes) Not sure if thats what you were looking for though.

it shouldn't really matter though, if you're using a flash, the shutter speed isn't really affecting your exposure, the power of the flash and your aperture are.

im not worried about my exposure though. I use flash for shooting blading and skiing so and i like to shoot with a higher shutter speed

ya if you're using a flash though, that's what "freezes the action", not your shutter speed.

^eh, only if the flash is the main source of light... if its just a secondary light source (the sun/ambient light being the first) then it can ghost pretty easily.
as far as i know, the sync speed is the highest shutter you can shoot at

Yeah, if hes shooting in broad daylight and just using the flash to fill in some shadows you could defintely get some nice ghosting with 1/200..

Lower power, sharper shots.
However on my Canon 580EXII, I can shoot can a higher shutter speed. The flash will let me shoot above 1/200th.

Higher power, longer the strobe will go off for, because of the discharge cycle. Discharging meaning firing off a strobe.
Lower power, less "flash" or light, quick it goes off.
I know its like that for "studio" strobes, I would assume it is like that for speedlights. The "quickness" I'm talking about is milliseconds, however if something is moving faster, it all adds up.

yeah thats what Ive heard elsewhere, but from less credible sources.

Makes some sense to me, but I also think higher power = more light = faster shutter speed, but I suppose that doesnt matter if he is already maxed out at 200
