200,000 members

quixotic

Anybody remember the huge deal it was when NS hit 100,000 members? Everyone making alias accounts trying to get that lucky 100,000 member number.

I just saw NS is over 200,000 members. Cool.

wonder how many actively participate in the forums. probably no more than a couple thousand?

it really did pass in an unnoticeable way compared with 100k. No alias race or anything. Almost disappointing.

Mindblowing to think of that many NS'ers though. NS members could now fill the largest stadium on the planet, and still have 50,000 members left out.

even though I swear it's like 60 of us who actually participate frequently.

The crazier part TBH is how many people there are that lurk and just watch.

If you take that number, it would fill Yankee stadium 15 times with new individual people.

Active numbers in the forums are much lower, but there's a lot more to NS than just the forums. Forum traffic makes up only about 44% of the total traffic on the site, people viewing content has gone completely off over the last few years.

As well, the rule of the internet is the 90/9/1 rule -

90% just watch and never sign in

9% sign in just to rate and occasionally comment

1% contribute content/discussions regularly

So out of NS' peak total traffic (~753,000 uniques in 30 days) you could assume that its about 7350 people that are doing the bulk of the contributions.

That sits about right with the last time we did our best to estimate this. That would mean that the 'occasional NSer' count (defined by semi-regular voting, but only one or two comments/submissions in a month) would be about 67,770.

The numbers are absolutely staggering. The growth has been like nothing I've ever seen before. Its honestly crazy.

the 200,000 member is..... *drumroll* ..... 200000

i want to know how many of those 200,000 are aliases? and also how many of those 200,000 are the kids I yell at while skiing who say "oh yeah, i don't ever sign on, i don't remember my password"

TBH I'm actually really, really, really curious.

See, we go both ways on the Olympics as a community. There seem to be about equal portions of people that hate them and that love them. There's an immense depth of conversations on the site about the issue, and lots of content regarding the athletes that will be competing.

As one of the newest (and I'd bet anything hottest) sports in the Olympics, I'd imagine that there is going to be some attention that comes our way.

We're certainly bracing for a traffic impact. Paul has actually been working hard for a few years now to really beef up the code for speed so it can handle the potential traffic spikes around Olympics time. We don't know if that will be 20,000 extra people or 2,000,000. Its so hard to say how things are going to react.

My gut says that we get a massive influx of lurkers around Olympics time, simply from the raw quantity of international google searches trying to learn more about this new 'freeskiing' stuff. (said from the perspective of an average armchair olympian). I'm sure we'll convert a few members, but I don't think it will be anything ludicrously substantial.

I do think that due to drastically higher mainstream attention, more Parents will be considering this vein of skiing to be something they can 'send their kids into' at an early age. Thusly, its only a matter of time before those people discover Newschoolers, so we may see an increased long-term flow of members.

TL;DR: Massive spike during, slow and slightly higher growth for years after.

I just googled it and FIS website came up... I guess that's because I frequently visit it, or does everyone get the FIS page on the first page?

I consider myself a regular. It has been decreased since December since I moved to Keystone and live in sagebrush, the land of no internets and I have to go to the mountain house to use the wifi. But I still try to be a valuable member, posting more in SG and little less in NSG

Does anyone know how to see the current number of members?

I know there used to be a number on the home page but it's long gone
