1984 fucking sucks

Read 1984 for my English class. We had to read the whole thing in like 2 weeks and 99% of the book was just Winston’s inner monologue saying boring shit. There was a well written page with a intriguing thought here and there but I swear I will never get that time back.
 
No kidding, crazy these books were written 50 years ago as horror stories of the future and next thing we know they've come true in too many ways. I barely remember reading Brave New World it's cool to remember it again. I went down a huge classics rabbit hole a few years ago, so many interesting ones out there.

yes im reading the jungle right now. very good! i find that bnw is the most accurate prediction of future (between that and 1984, the jungle was more of an expose)

For real it only took me 2 min to read the spark notes and I aced my test on it
 
I remember reading this book. It was okay. Hilarious how many times it gets referenced by people who've never read it though.

Lol I had to read brave new world in 8th grade. Kinda understood it but had to go reread it as a senior in HS to understand it more

Most ppl don’t even know what actual communism even is. The term was bastardized bcuz of how the government of the Soviet Union in the early 20th century claimed to be communists, and how they applied it. But the reality is, the way that “communism” was applied and put into application in the Soviet Union has very little or any resemblance of what communism is. And yes it is just a theory, but u need to understand that the soviets claimed to be applying that theory and implementing it as an integral part of their government and putting it into practical application, when in fact they were not. Thus, when ppl think communism they immediately think Russia or china, or other places whereby the word was used , and it’s very misleading bcuz all these countries applied a very ignorant and misinformed version of communism (theory).

I say we give them all a chunk of Alaska or Canada and let them take another crack at it. Surely things would go well right?

Well the false narrative that communism (theory) is plagued with is propagated by the media, so blame them for not clarifying its correct meaning and terminology. Bcuz whenever anyone says communism or you are a communist they are ignorant referring and referencing it to where it was incorrectly applied and or practiced i.e Russia, China, North Korea, and Vietnam for example. Thus, the word represents a false narrative to say the very least.

It's from the time of Joseph Stalin and the end of WWII when England, the US, and the Soviet Union had to pretty much divide up the rest of the world between them. I didn't realize any of that on my first read through. If you learn a little bit about Joseph Stalin and the way he behaved it makes a lot more sense.

Yes context of when anything is written certainly is very important as it provides insight into the perspective of the author from that given time period. So Orwells perspective to a degree was influenced by the overall sentiment, feelings, and living experiences of the British people during the war. Near the end of the war Stalin was going for territory, and trying to get as much of it as possible. So Orwell’s feelings and his ideas about the way the future would unfold were definitely not unfounded.
 
The Giver is another completely relevant story to the near future. The boomer generation still has retirement plans and social security, but at least the latter we know is soon running out and generations below are severely lagging on retirement funds. We already are severely short staffed in general, but especially health care. It’s not too realistic to expect people to afford skyrocketing end of life care, we can’t even afford hospital bills for ourself, much less the costs with end of life care.
