18 mile run on Mount Massive??

I was talking to a dude at Loveland pass the other day who told me about an 18 mile run on I think the backside of Mount Massive outside Leadville. He said it’s about a 3 mile hike up and 18 mile ride out into maybe Leadville?? Couldn’t catch all the specifics but has anyone heard of this run? Or similar super long lines in Colorado. Seems so rad to ski out 18 miles.

Might of been talking about a bike trail or cross country ski. That would make way more sense.

Probably more saying he traveled 18 miles with/on skis. Don't envision it as 18 miles of pure downhill fun. I do enjoy such things immensely, but you got to realize there is normally quite a bit of suffering, and intermittent up and down involved in a long tour like that as well.

All routes are different obviously, but for example the other day I did about 13 miles on skis. but only about 4K of downhill vert in those miles, and 7K up.

I live in leadville, and yeah Mt.Massive is big, but you aint gonna get 18miles of pure downhill skiing out of it.

But if it’s 18 miles. It’s fuckin worth

Im no mathematician but 14,000ft to 8,000ft (leadville elevation) over 18 miles (93,000 vertical feet) = a super low slope meaning slow and not fun especially when you include ungroomed snow for the distance as well.

Is there a super long trail that goes into Leadville? Probably but its not 18 miles. Prove me wrong.

man was on xcountry skis and tights for sure

Lol homie was “pro for 9 years” also and had gapped Loveland pass “at leas hundreds of times”. So I took what he said with a grain of salt to say the least. But who knows ??‍♀️ I don’t think this guy knew what cross country skiing was lol

"I once skied a 200 mile run in Sweden" - this guy

What he actually did....

Historical context for those who don't get the reference: In Operation Gunnerside, Norwegian commandos "skied" ~200 miles back to Sweden after blowing up a German heavy water plant in Norway.

He blew up his shoulder on a hunna footer comp jump. Took it too deep landed 60 feet out of the air. Then decided not to be pro anymore. But gaps Loveland pass on the reg lol

no hate, was a cool dude for sure but maybe a lil far fetched

Whoops Im wrong again.

I know Leadville has the highest airport in North America so I had to look it up. It's 9,927ft.

Then I had to think where I pulled 8,000ft from so went and looked at Gunnison,CO airport which has the highest commercial airlines which is almost 8,000ft.

Guess I shouldn't be posting under the influence.

haha no worries, i should have added that i still agree it seems unlikely

He may have been talking about a thru-hike mission (look it up). It's impossible to hike up Mt. Massive, ski down, and have 18 miles under your belt, even round trip. He is probably talking about a ski tour where you head up and ski/hike deeper into the mountain range and end up on the other side.

There are routes like this and you can certainly rack up 18 miles+ over the course of your journey, just not one up and down trip on Mt. Massive. People that do this are experienced to say the least. Thru-hikers are the guys on forums talking about ultra-ultra-light weight everything. They kill it but it's a rabbit hole of 'ounce differences in jacket weight being a life or death decision' type discussions.

He wasn’t exactly that type lol. His beard prolly weighed 5 pounds lol. He said 3 miles up 18 down. He didn’t get too specific tho. But I think he prolly a lil full of it
